I think John Moore will be a solid player for us, but if you're expecting a front line offensive threat, then I think you'll be disappointed. I think he'll be a solid two way guy who can add some offense, but is more of a steady defender. Maybe a player in the Bred Hedican mold?

That's just not true.

Seems pretty weak when he goes in any direction other than up throughout ice. Love his willingness to fight.

I think people waiting for Moore to figure it out, are going to be waiting forever. Very low hockey IQ. Those type of guys rarely figure it out.

The hatred and lack of patience for this guy is unbelievable. John Moore was never billed as an "offensive defenseman" by people in the hockey community. He had a few years of high point totals while in juniors, but almost entirely because of his work on the power play. "Fans" erroneously see that and assume he's supposed to be an elite PMD. He's a guy who was a very nice PPQB but to this point hasn't been given the chance to do it at the NHL level.

If you followed scouting reports on Moore when he was drafted, or even keep up on what people around the league say about him today, nobody thinks of him as that type of player. Moore is a guy who was one of the best defensive players in the USHL his entire tenure there and continued steady play with Kitchener of the OHL. He was drafted to be more of a McDonagh type, guy who can play great defense and has some offensive upside. Specifically on the power play, which he has not been used on at all.

Has the defense come for Moore yet? Not exactly. His skating is elite and his positioning is good, but not great. He needs to bulk up maybe and get stronger, but it seems that Rangers brass wants him to play a style he's not exactly accustomed to playing. The guy has also played a lot of this season on his right side. For those saying he's WORSE than Del Zotto, get a grip. Defensively Moore had a few bad games in a row there because they were trying to showcase Del Zotto and kept him on the left side. When they switch and Moore was on his strong side, DZ looked horrible while Moore looked fine. With Moore back on his natural side and a steady stay-at-home guy like Klein back there, I guarantee Moore looks great over the next month. I actually thought he looked really good against St Louis.

He hasn't had a chance on the power play? John Moore has averaged just over a minute per game on the power play this season. It's resulted in 2 power play points (both assists, only one of which was a primary). Incidentally? Those are the only two power play points of his career to date. Del Zotto has 56 power play points for his career, including 5 this season. There's a reason Moore doesn't get a ton of power play time. There's a reason he didn't make the Blue Jackets D over guys that we cast off. There's a reason he NEVER should have been elevated over a guy like MDZ--He's just not as good as you want him to be. He's big and he can skate. Good for him. Unfortunately, he's weak as hell along the boards and he doesn't play hockey all that well.

If anything happens to Staal, this defense is ****ed.

Those are very high hopes, considering Hedican was a top-4 (arguably no. 2) guy for a significant time.

This. If he was playing solid D while not doing anything offensively, it'd be fine. However, listening to people say he was better than MDZ is absolutely ridiculous.

MDZ was a bad player for 3 of 4 years here, and you could tell that from year 2, he wasn't getting any better. I doubt that he will, ever, but I hope I'm wrong.

John Moore, I simply don't notice. I don't see him blow coverage or make huge mistakes, like everybody says, but because everybody says it, I have to buy it. I don't notice anything good he does either, aside from last game where he created some plays.

MDZ, on the other hand, was notably bad. He created about 5 really good plays while in NY.

Thing is, I know very little about Moore's game in the last year that we've had him. It's sort of like Alexei Gusarov. Is he really worse than DZ was?

I personally think he is a stupid person... But he seems coachable by AV in this case

Neck and neck.

Exactly. Moore is the one on the left.

Overall Moore looked very good today. After a sloppy first period (but the whole team was sloppy in the first) he set up Zucc's first goal. Was a distraction for Brodeur on Zucc's 2nd goal.

Not sure about Hedican but I agree with your premise.

I'd think with guys like Palmieri, Kreider, Chiasson who were from his draft class who are just starting to come into their own Moore would get a bit more leeway.

I do not know what Moore is just yet, but I do not think it's out of the question that he becomes a pretty good player.

Moore needs more even strength time and more responsibility. I think the kid will be a real good second pairing d man. Just needs time. He was on crapy CMBS fora few years

Tonight and last game were the first times I've noticed him. I'm convinced AV gave him new instructions, 'cause hell, let's have him take risks in thw unlikely event that he'd be more noticeable... especially now that Klein is across from him (very solid positioning). Good couple games, though I saw him let a weak clearing attempt go by early on. Is there Moore? lol

Remember, though, they've always produced some pretty good D-men, at least since they existed, what, 13 years?

I saw all kinds of weak passes throughout the game--not just Moore. Kreider. Nash. Richards. Boyle. Numerous weak clearing passes.

hes lacking experience and confidence. thats it. theres too much raw talent with his kid. he just needs to play more.

hes not ryan mcdonagh. hes still learning and working through his few wasted years in cbus where he regressed and fought his skills for 2 years.

hes a beautiful skater. turns his hips with ease. good stick skills and shows flashes of some offensive flair. he can rush the puck and recover seamlessly.

his problems still are in the def zone in unsettled situations where he runs around too much. he still needs to stop fighting his reads and be more instinctive when his back is to the net. hes go some learning still to do there.

but with mcd, staal, stralzie, girardi and now klein to learn from hes got a solid group to grow with. he can learn and watch how these guys manage both ends of the ice.

im a huge moore supporter. as much as i wanted del zaster and his sloth like "no way" game gone, i want this kid to succeed.

he fits the nyr strong skating mobile dman mold to a tee. over 6'1, athletic, fast and mobile seems to be the template for our dmen now. and all these guys can skate.

same with brady skjei- smooth stride and a great shot but more def ensive and calle andersson- the swede and another rh shot but with way more offensive ability than any other dman in the system. andersson has the skills to be a very solid pmd we so need.

keep an eye on andersson. hes flown under the radar and doesnt get much attention but this kid is a very good prospect.

AV has been encouraging all of the D to become more involved in the offense especially Del Zotto and Moore. The light has not gone yet for Moore. They want him to lead the rush and use his legs to get himself out of trouble. Its only happened a few times so far. Moore has the ability to do it. He was really good in the game in Dallas and yesterday. If Moore could be Leddy of the Hawks, the Rangers would take it. Leddy plays on their third pair. Adds offense. Skating ability. The Rangers need more points out of their D.

This... personally I think he needs to gain some weight probably help him in the d zone pin guys in boards...he recovers very well with his skating ability... I think he'll be a great 2nd pair Dman when he's in his prime (which is fine with our D core)

I love having him paired with Klein. His game has elevated simply because of a real defensive partner. Unfortunately for MDZ, he pretty much lost his roster spot. Played offense like a 2nd pair guy, but played defense like a 7th Dman. Given that Moore, unlike MDZ, actually has the ability to skate well, pairing him with someone else who can hold the defensive end of the ice makes a ton of sense. Furthermore, there's no reason Girardi or Stralman should have had their spot given away for MDZ who most likely wouldn't exceed expectations there compared to those players

At this point in his career, John Moore is a below average defenseman that is prone to bad decisions and blown coverages, but has a hard shot and top level skating ability that makes him look a little better than he really is.

I've seen little that makes me think he's primed for a significant step up in the cognitive department, but nonetheless, if he can get a better mental grasp on defensive zone play he could be a very solid midpairing defenseman.
