Dreger: John Klingberg return to NHL (TOR OTT EDM among 5-7 interested teams)

One of those teams is going to sign him over trading for a legit dman like Provorov or Pettersson and they are going to be sorely disappointed.
I mean at least if it happens in the next couple weeks you've got at least a month of runway to see if it works or they need to go bigger. Have to imagine it's going to be less than a million, maybe loaded with bonuses

Oilers tried to trade for him at one point when he was still healthy. He should go to a winning environment in Edmonton who once coveted him and has patience for players coming off injury to find their game (see Connor Brown).

When healthy and playing like normal Klingberg, being a Right Shot defenceman with decent offence to his game is valuable. This guy wasn’t offered 8 year deal by the Stars for no reason. (Ooof on his agent).

A 1 year show me deal that’s buriable in the AHL is no risk at all. But if he can find his game, the reward immense.

You gotta wonder how much this guy is kicking himself for rejecting a $58M contact...

For those wondering why players don't take short deals and bet on themselves, this is why.

Then they bury his contract and it’s forgotten about.

Yes the worst decision of his life for sure. Hopefully he can make a comeback and maybe sign a 3-4 year deal and get some of that lost money back.

Signing a RHD like Klingberg to a cheap free agent deal isn't necessarily mutually exclusive to trading for a LHD. RHD rental market looks particularly drab (Savard, Ceci, Petry, Rutta, Borgen). We'll see if there are teams that would immediate insert Klingberg into their top 6 or if he's just an insurance #7 coming off of his surgery.

Well he fired the agent responsible for that brutal decision - with good reason, too.

I'm hoping Klinger can get his career back on track.

Rough... I think he's klinging onto what's left of his NHL career to try take back some of the millions he lost from refusing that contract offer...

I wonder if the wings are interested. Our right side sucks.

I mean at the end of the day the client still gives the OK.

His agent may have steered him toward rejecting that deal but he also got greedy about it.

Ehh you don't improve a sucky right side by adding more sucky RHD.

Yeah Kane has proven you can come back from hip resurfacing, but Klingberg is not Patrick Kane.

Dreger and Johnson said klingberg has himself to blame

He saw other contracts and turned down the offer himself

Fired his agent to save face

And I'm sure Klinger blames himself as well, for listening to the agent who allegedly convinced him that he'd get more on the open market instead of the solid deal already on the table from Dallas.

Lesson learned, I guess.

He's been injured.

If his injury is fixed then he would be worth a league minium contract, unless you have to expose a more valuable younger defenceman to waivers by doing so.

The Leafs could send down either or both of Mermis and Rifai to sign Klingberg and bring McCabe back off IR.

LD: Rielly, McCabe, Benoit, and Ekman-Larsson.

RD: Tanev, Myers, Timmins, and Klingberg.

Mix and match, on either side, in any order you like.

Signing Klingberg doesn't cost the Leafs anything but money. There is no opportunity cost, in case something better comes along later.

There's nothing else in the system.

End of the day I think an agent knows better than to lose his cut of $58M by pushing his client to go for more.

Say Klingberg's agent gets 4%. Do you really piss away a $2.3M payday trying to get $240K more for yourself? (Report was Klingberg wanted 8 x $8M)

Nevermind that pushing him to UFA would've meant Klingberg would've needed 7 x $8.3M just for the agent to break even.

I wonder if he will send royalty checks to Pat Kane if Klingberg does get another contract. Seems like Kane is the posterboy for players who have had that resurfacing surgery and returned.

Ottawa being interested seems strange.

I don't think we need another PMD. I get you can never have too many but with our cap situation and how mediocre Klingberg is, I am surprised we are in the running.

At the moment, Kane is the anomaly for that surgery.

Until somebody else recovers like that it's still going to be viewed as "Because he's Patrick f***ing Kane".

I hope the Oilers pass. I just don’t like this player. I’d hate to miss on a better D due to cost thinking this option is suitable.

If any player joins the Oilers without playing in a long while let it be Jonathan Toews. I’d see value in even the most limited mins played adding captain serious to our group.
