Klingberg signed a 1 year, $7M contract with Anaheim this summer. He probably thought he could play well enough to earn a longer contract with another team next season.

I haven't seen any speculations regarding Klingberg in a potential trade at the deadline. What would he fetch, who would be interested and does Anaheim need to retain salary?

I guess maybe the Islanders with a relatively poor power play could use him. Maybe Seattle, they have some room for his salary and some picks to trade. Any other? Edmonton? Calgary?
He’s not getting a 1st

anaheim likely needs help from another team to lower his cap to under $2M

that's actual money…so ANA gets him to $3.5M. Next team retains him to just 2M (1,5M about 43% of 3.5M and about 21% of full cap )and they take on of remains salary. If thry trade him with 25% of season left

that means the third team takes on @0around $350,000 in real money which is about a 2nd round or 3rd round pick. Thst takes away from Anaheim’s return which forces then to split the value into smaller picks.

It might not cost that if day Anaheim and say chicago did pass thrus of each other’s moved contracts to retain. The salar difference equates to a lower round pick.

Why would anyone pay that much? He is terrible. Why would a team be that desperate to allow more goals unless they are trying to tank?
I agree he hasn’t been good this year but a team will take a chance on him(based on previous years)…. Lot of people are terrible on Anaheim…. Just last year most of the trade boards were talking about how awful lindholm was.

Perhaps. I don’t get why Ducks are so bad. I didn’t expect them to be contenders, but they are abysmal.

I think a lot of it is Eakins system. Drysdale/lundy being injured certainly didn’t help the roster either.

Also doesn’t help when you are expecting fowler to be your # 1 and klingberg to be your #2 dmen. I think fowler is more of a 2/3 guy, and kling id more of a pp specialist #4. Our defense as a whole is playing above where their skill level is.

I don’t even think gibson has been bad…. The team defense is just not good

Who are some other players that missed a big contract by declining a year or two early?

Wayne Simmonds, for example, started a nosedive in the second to last year of his 2nd contract. He went from a Milan Lucic type outlook to a 1 year deal at a decent number and then a series of 4th line contracts.

It's pretty comical that a guy thinks he could return a 1st. He won't return a top 60 pick even at 50% retention.

Perhaps. I don’t get why Ducks are so bad. I didn’t expect them to be contenders, but they are abysmal.

Most of the team is playing at least 1 spot above where they should be. Most of the team is 2nd/3rd liners at this point with Fowler being the only legit top 3 d-man on the team (asked to play #1). Terry is probably the only top line player on the team (and on a contender he shouldn't be the best player). The #1 RHD is Klingberg/Shatt (who should be #4/5 and #5/6 respectively), Drysdale is out for the season (sadly probably the best RHD on the team). Also, I'm not sure if Eakins doesn't have a defensive system or the players just don't get it. There are FAR too many breakdowns on a nightly basis. With a good coach, this team probably misses playoffs still unless they over achieve, but they'd be closer to a playoff spot than #1 overall. The Ducks need some lottery luck this year more than a lot/most of the teams near the bottom this year. Every time the pick in single digits, their pick drops.

What was the rumor of what the Stars offered him to stay? He's probably wondering if he will make as much now over the long haul.

Supposedly the Stars offered 8 years at $7M per year and he turned it down because he wanted 8x8. Who knows how accurate that is, but I'm sure the Stars offered him at least 5M per, which looking at it now it appears that he made a huge mistake turning them down and the Stars dodged a bullet on that one. Keeping Klingberg was always unlikely given the contracts that would expire during any potential Klingberg deal. He probably thought he could leverage any Stars offer to start a little bit of a bidding war. I have a hard time believing he would have turned down 8x7 just to hold out for an extra 1M a year. With no state tax in Texas, it wouldn't have made a difference anyway, and why leave a sure thing with a team that you're familiar with that's on the upswing and is a contender in the playoffs already? There's got to be more to the story and I'm sure some of those rumors are wrong, but no matter how you look it at, he definitely made a huge miscalculation there.

As an Oiler fan, I believe that Klingberg is the exact opposite of what we need. We already have Barrie and Bouchard for puck movers. Plus, that salary. I just don't know how we could fit it in. I hope Edmonton passes.

He was still sheltered in the past

Someone will add him but he’s not really a great playoffs add
