Player Discussion John-Jason (JJ) Peterka, RW (34th overall, 2020) -- Signed to ELC

I am listening to it now. When I am done, I'll let you know what he said.

TLDR: Taxes were mentioned, but it wasn't a big deal.

EDIT:
The podcast was very interesting overall, but the tax thing was talked about in just a couple of sentences. It was also brought up by one of the hosts not by Peterka. The host asked him about the tax situation in NYS since they had heard about the differences in state income tax in different states and how that may be an advantage for teams in certain states like Florida.
And they asked him if that is something that players consider and take into account. And JJ's reply was that it certainly seems to have an impact for UFAs. Peterka thinks the biggest thing your looking for as an UFA is to find a spot where you are confident that you'll make the playoffs. And when a host interjected that those teams from states with lower taxes are usually among the better teams, Peterka affirmed that, but did not really go into any detail (basically he said "yeah"). He also mentioned that NYS has some of, if not the highest taxes, which is not so good (from a player's perspective).
But just from the whole tone of the conversation, it was not really a big deal, but just a bit of a tangent, that was brought up by the German hosts, because it is difficult for them to wrap their head around the whole concept with the different state taxes and how that impacts both the parity of the league and the individual players.

What I took from his comments about his contract situation:
1. He lives in Buffalo very close to the arena, and seems to like it. (He does prefer his hometown of Munich to Buffalo though)
2. He leaves the details to his agent, he doesn't really want to deal with it too much.
3. They talked about the deadlines and what would happen if they can't agree on a contract, and Peterka brought up the Nylander situation in Toronto to illustrate how these things can go.
4. But he didn't seem too worried, even if it takes some time. To translate a quote from him "The summer is long".
5. He had also talked about his contract situation when he explained why he wasn't playing at the World Championships, and from what he said there, it seems like would definitely prefer a long term contract over a bridge. Because he said about the risk of playing in the tournament without a signed deal, that going in your team might have been interested in giving you an 8-year deal, but if you play and get hurt, things might change and suddently they'll only offer you 3 years.

Appreciate the translation. Thanks.

Same. I now want beer gardens and hitting fleischers for some grilled sausage and a fresh roll.
Next time your in Buffalo try Hofbrauhaus, the food and Weissbier is pretty good. I get my Schnitzel fix there from my days in Kaiserslautern.

Thanks very much for this information.

PHam was on WGR yesterday (first segment of the Extra Point Show) and speculated that JJP was one of the Sabres that wasn't a big fan of Ruff.

Again, it was heavy speculation, but he said he heard whispers that some of the players were not a fan of playing for Ruff, and "if he had to guess" that JJ was one of them. He noted that JJ's demeaner and body language was much worse last year.

This has already been reported - Pham is just reiterating what someone else already reported (maybe it was Lance on that last Merek podcast interview?)

He said Peterka didn’t like playing the way they were being made to play under Ruff at the beginning…but then Ruff realized it and they had a big meeting and came to a mutual understanding. It’s what Ruff is referring to when he talks about it taking some time for him to understand where the players were coming from and stuff.

It seems like everything was totally fine by the end of the season, but I don’t blame Hamilton for wondering if he has residual resentment. Personally, I’m guessing that he doesn’t and his only issues are the team’s future ability to compete.

We're still doing the body language shtick

Ruff preached in the beginning of the year that players need to play outside their comfort zone (blocking shots, battling, etc...). I wonder if that's what Peterka had issues with. It may also have been his usage or the system.

Peterka is so skilled. If he ever learns to commit more to the defensive side of things and battle harder...he could be a star in this league. Im just not sure that side of the game is in him.

I'm not a PHam fan by any stretch of the imagination, but JJ's body language was markedly different this year than years past and it was noticeable. I'm not reading too much into it.

Sorry for the crossover to football, but I remember thinking the same thing about Josh Allen during Diggs' last year here. Some said he was trying to be a more serious leader, some said his relationship with Diggs was bad, and he also had broken up with his girlfriend as well around that timeframe... You never know what's going in the locker room or in a players' personal life. All I know is Josh's demeanor was back to normal this past year.

Hopefully whatever is draining JJ, if anything, is able to get resolved.

The only time I ever saw "bad" body language from JJP, was if he screwed up or missed an wide open net. Which isn't necessarily bad, if it was over team mates plays or a coach that's one thing

Side note the day people stop listening to Paul Hamiltons opinions on hockey, the buffalo populations hockey IQ will double

Please stop listening to Hamilton he is clueless about hockey

If you doubled PHam's IQ it would remain the same as zero times zero remains zero.
