Severely overrated PP specialist—Ovi parasite.
I can see why you might think that from afar but I’ve never heard anyone who watches the caps regularly say that

The team pretty much collapsed when he missed 2-3 months a couple years ago after almost losing his ear to that slapshot vs Winnipeg. Only time they’ve missed the playoffs in what 13 or so years?

ETA: Its an even greater testament to him as a player that he fought hard to return in what was a lost season, coming back after a 3 month recuperation to play the last 9 games for a non-playoff team.

I’m sure no one would have faulted him for writing the rest of the year off and coming back the next fall, and the fact that he didn’t speaks volumes about his sense of duty to his teammates the role he plays in setting the team culture, which is low-key one of the best in the league.

Carlson was the #1D on a Cup winning team too. That’s something that doesn’t, but I think should, matter a lot for HOF consideration.

Let's see if his resume is Hall of fame worthy..

7th all time in NHL points among US defensemen, including 10th all time in goals.
To add to this, he's arguably the greatest Washington capitals defenseman of all time with Rod Langway having the only real argument given his two Norris trophies and longevity with the franchise. Voters seem to like that stuff

Norris record: 2, 4, 5, 10, 10, 12

Didn't peak super high nor have a lengthy Norris record..(ongoing ofc, but already 35)

4th in scoring and 9th in PPG among defenseman in the 2010s.

The names surrounding him in scoring that decade are Brent Burns, Erik Karlsson, Alex Pietrangelo, Kris Letang, Victor Hedman, Ryan Suter..

All excellent defenseman, but the only locks here are Victor Hedman and Erik Karlsson. Burns probably gets in given he has a Norris and was a finalist two other times

Everyone else is borderline/hall of very good given they were never Norris Finalists more than once, Remember that it's much harder for defenseman to get inducted.

And while I do think he probably has the weakest case here, it's not laughable to discuss him getting inducted one day. I'd say everyone I named have comparable individual resumes to Phil Housley and Sergei Zubov, both of whom are in.
