Player Discussion Joel Armia - Your favorite Finnish player Edition

At 17 years old he was the best player in his team in the top men's league in Finland. It was my favorite team so I watched all his games before he moved to NA. He was my absolute favorite player back then. He was talented as heck, had all the tools to make it in the big show.

And he has. Sort of. Kind of. Not as big as I expected but in a way it fits the way he was and seems to still be: a shy and humble guy who imo lacked and lacks the real desire to become a top line guy in the NHL. He seems to be satisfied with playing in lower lines, maybe also realized his own limitations at some point.

I agree with some who said "1-year deal". Give him a proper paycheck for it too. I dont see how he would say no, even if some other teams would be waving a magical 4-year kontrakt (with less $ per year) in his face.

I dont know, just a feeling I get. And I too would keep Armia for at least 1 more season, maybe 2 but I would hesitate to sign him for 3 or 4. Ive read he gave very low effort for a long stretch (multiple years basically), and it can definitely happen again.

If the Habs can re-sign Armia, Evans and Heineman for around 6-7M AAV total for 2-3 years, that would be great to stabilize the bottom-6 during Montreal’s transition into contending status.

1.5M for Heineman and 2.5M each for Armia and Evans?

Edit. I was gonna add this but I wasnt sure if I can really trust my memory (but I checked his stats for his age 17-19 seasons in Finland and now I think I can trust it):
- Armia basically became and was the best player he could offensively be already at 17. Offensively he didnt get much better. And I think that was what I cared about with Joel, to see him become an even bigger offensive force because it felt like thats where his value was. Apparently it wasnt. Or he reinvented himself due to necessity.

To me, his ability to win board battles and extend plays that have no business to be extended is going to be sorely missed when he's gone. It's an elite skill and it makes everyone around him better. Better breakouts, more offensive opportunities, killing time etc.

If I'm a contender, I give a 1st round pick for this guy. But I hope we keep him.
I think the key is like a 2 year contract.

Someone was saying that he sought help for some mental health issues last year. If that’s the case and he’s been better since, I’d feel better keeping him.

Out of the forward group. I really only want Dvo and Gally gone. Getting upgrades on them would make us that much better and I think we could do that internally easily.

Newhook I’m willing to be patient with but not too sure he’s with us long term.

It’s really a tough call keeping the Armias and Evanses. We got so many interesting prospects outside our top guys who could slate in there more cheaply but it’s too risky to let go of these guys now.

But then we don’t really know if Armia, Evans or an Anderson can keep this up still beyond this year.

I lean towards keeping them but it COULD bite us

Rumor is that he really likes it here and with this group, so I wouldn't be surprised at all if he kept low dollar or term to remain.

Obviously if he wants 3 years you don't bite.
Not a rumor, Armia said it in interviews that he liked it here and wanted to stay in previous years. This is also his 7th season with the Habs.

But yeah, 3 years is too long.

I talked about last year. You talked this magical land that doesn't exist. Where did you even pull those numbers?
You talked about what kind of 4th liner scores 20 goals , I said he did it while he was in the top 6 and PP during the last years before Suzuki and Caufield joined and changed the PP.
Like I said you lost yourself in your thoughts.

That's simply untrue. He had 0 PPP last year nor played with Suzuki and Caufield.

My ideal offer would be 2 years with a 2m caphit, but I don't think a 3rd year would be a deal breaker especially if it lowers the cap hit, or reduces or eliminates any kind of NTC.

So long as the caphit is low, then term just doesn't matter too much because when the kids are ready and are pushing him out of the lineup, then he gets pushed out of the lineup. Having him be there as the 13th or 14th F on a 23man roster is a perfectly fine worst case scenario.
