Player Discussion Joel Armia - Your favorite Finnish player Edition

Armia played 3 years in Liiga and got 18/18/19 goals during regular season. Laine played one proper year and got 17 with similar number of games.

He used to have a scoring touch but that didn’t translate well to NHL and he had to reinvent his game. I think the players who successfully go through this end up being your best 3rd and 4th liners with ability to step up in case of injuries.

Someone will give him 3 years, so any 1 year offer is just not going to work. 2 might be doable if done early.

To me, his ability to win board battles and extend plays that have no business to be extended is going to be sorely missed when he's gone. It's an elite skill and it makes everyone around him better. Better breakouts, more offensive opportunities, killing time etc.

If I'm a contender, I give a 1st round pick for this guy. But I hope we keep him.

You don't let a great bottom 6 line go out the door. I wanted Armia gone, but his line with Evans and Heineman is a thing of beauty. Sign Armia to 1 year deals if you can until he's pushed out by someone else.

Still need that size, puck protection and PK ability to win in the playoffs.
Why would Armia agree to a 1 year deal? He could easily get 3 years as a ufa, maybe even 4.

He responded to the stint in the AHL last year and has been playing great ever since, currently he is probably playing the best hockey in his career.

The decision to re-sign him would be a no brainer if we weren't stuck with Gallagher/Anderson for another 2 years, but even with those 2 still on the team I'd be happy with bringing Armia back.

If someone gives us a 1st for him, I trade him without any second thoughts. Then I turn around and get a hockey deal done with that 1st in a bigger area of weakness, maybe RD or 2nd line to push Newhook down.I think Armia can be replaced internally.

I don't want him for 3-4 years, he will block youngsters in years 3 and 4. Maybe even year 2.

I don't think he will sign for only 1 year and ideally his cap hit would be lower than 3.4M. Don't think he is worth that in a team hierarchy.

I sell him for the right price at the deadline, but if that price is not better than a 3rd and we are still in the mix, I keep him.

A player development and career are quite often non-linear. Predicting years ahead by simply extrapolating years behind would be insufficient. It is well documented that Joel has had self-confidence issues as a player in the NHL. Maybe these issues are behind him now. Maybe what we see now is Joel finally fulfilling the elite potential we all saw for short periods in the past. Maybe. Hard to tell from behind a computer. I trust MSL and Hughes are close enough to the players and they will be able to make an educated prediction about Armia. Whatever decision they take (trade or extend), I'm pretty sure it will be the good one.

Team gave him player of the game internally last night , good for him , I'd love to still have Armia on the team if we ever make the playoffs in the next 1-2-3 years

Armia is not Finnish, he's just getting started

He was on waivers not claimed last year.. I don't think anyone is giving him that term again.

If he wants to seek it, you let him walk, then.
That's tied to his salary and way his play was trending. Let's not forget it was seen as a surprising move for Armia to be waived. Props for Joel to lift up his sleeves and also see the team's sports psychologist.

Nobody wil give it to him but he'll ask for it until around july 10th or so when it will be 100% sure nobody gives it to him. It's potentially his last contract he'll want those years and i doubt he'll sign until he's 100% sure he wont get them. If he wants to sign 1 year 2ish millions sure why not. But that's like saying i would not want to work as a guy cleaning the bathroom of a skyscraper unless you pay me 200 000 a year. That's an oxymoron since nobody will pay you that. People should not work with the assumption Armia will sign 1 year before mid july it's unlikely to happen.

Rumor is that he really likes it here and with this group, so I wouldn't be surprised at all if he kept low dollar or term to remain.

Obviously if he wants 3 years you don't bite.

1, or 2 year deal. Could see 3, but that's like 1.5ish.

1, or 2 year deal I could see at around 2.5.

In the cup run he was pretty damn good. He's got the size and skill to be a menace.

However there's still almost 40 games to go and like 20 before the trade deadline, so let's see how he does.

Assuming the Habs keep winning more than they're losing, Hughes likely just does what he's done before and has an established ask for the ufas and if its not met they're not trading them.

Have to imagine the price also has the disruption of the team factored in there.

How many 4th liners score on a 20 goal pace. You don't like the guy. No need to make stuff up or not fact check
20 pts in 44 games and I can't remember one of those scoring plays. He should be given time on the 2nd line to see what he can do. If he sets up a lot of goals then you know that he should be good with the prospects that are arriving - Heineman, Beck, Davidson, Kapanen, Roy etc. to make a 3rd or 4th line with offensive potential.
