I had really high hopes for the Jays coming in, but I don't think even I would have expected them to be this good given everything that's gone wrong for them so far. We're almost at the quarter mark and they've:

- faced easily the toughest schedule among the AL East competitors
- had Springer for less than four games
- seen all of their starters except for Matz spend time on the IL
- never had more than one or two of their top 5-6 high leverage relievers available at the same time and ultimately had to turn to waiver claims and recent call-ups to give them key innings
- gotten absolutely garbage production out of Rowdy, Gurriel, and Jansen (while also losing Kirk to injury)

It's absolutely remarkable that they're sitting in the second Wild Card spot right now and just a game and a half out of the division lead.

As for the rotation, I think I'm more confident than you because I believe Manoah will be up really soon (with SWR getting the call to AAA by mid season) and there's a lot of opportunity to add a big piece (or even just another Ray/Walker type like last year) at the deadline.

This, with the additional add-ons that the run differential is legit, they're one of only four teams in the AL to have a winning record against .500+ teams and they've played 64% of their games on the road.

Well put. I agree, if Manoah continues to excel they will bring him up very soon. In previous years, they would worry about years of control, and other factors but now it is about fielding the best possible team.

I also think Montoyo has done a fairly good job. He has used his bullpen well, his lineups have been good and his defensive replacements make sense. He's been much better than last year.

The Mets starting RF, CF, 3B, 2B, and 3 relievers are on the IL. Not to mention deGrom, Syndergaard, Carrasco and now Walker all hurt.

The only starters they have healthy are Lindor, Alonso, Smith, McCann and Stroman.

I thought we had it bad.

Pretty much every free agent pitcher has been ok, bad, or injured except for Bauer.

I think they're going to still worry about control with Manoah a bit. As long as the Rotation is at least 3 solid-or-better pitchers deep with Ryu, Ray, and Matz there's not as much of a rush. And in spite of all the ultra-hype right now we're still talking about a kid that's pitched all of like 12 innings above Short-A and less than 30 pro innings total. There's nothing wrong with giving him another few weeks to mow down AAA just to make sure he can and this isn't a fluke. And then you also get the benefit of it going into June and being late enough in the season to gain that extra year of control.

They've already got the extra year whether they call him up now or later in the year.

Bowden: Teams should promote these MLB prospects to the majors right now

Twins are losing 14-3. They also have the worst record in the league and are 10.5 games out of first in their division.

I’ll take Maeda. Or Pineda.

I'm pretty sure that Twins/ Sox game could be classified as bullying in like 30 states.

Astudillo has appeared in 4 games to pitch in relief already. Did i mention he's a position player?

Oh also:

That's just...yikes.

Kinda sucks seeing Happ get shelled like that, on the bright side his ERA is like 1.91 outside of those 2 games against the White Sox so he might not be finished yet.

Could someone please explain the title of this thread, was this a joke or something about Vladdy that Tabler made? I don't get it.

Tabler has a habit of saying stuff like “now that’s a baseball player” as verbal filler in place of actual analysis.

It's interesting to see how some of the guys we discussed as trade candidates have done so far this year. Bryant has been the best of the bunch, Hendricks has been bad and Castillo has been awful. Interesting article on fangraphs today about Castillo's change-up and other issues.

It’s too bad Cherington was adamant on Kirk for Musgrove.
