Omg....get out the soap...you are grounded. You must listen to Jim Huson call 100 games in shear boredom and then go back and listen to Danny Gallivan once. Then tell us that excited announcers are not great. Why don't you just turn off the sound.

I loved Gallivan but I never found him as over-the-top as Bowen. Gallivan and Bill Hewitt are the voices I grew up with.

This is exactly it - they know the Leafs get beamed across the country (not sure how regional blackouts apply), so they tailor their broadcasts in that way too; it's not just "shade against the Leafs" every now and again to appear more balanced, but also with how much time they spend discussing the opposition & stuff around the league.

Ever watch a SNET West broadcast for a Canucks game? It's all Canucks, all the time, with limited amounts of negativity. They barely ever discuss the opposition, unless the Canucks are getting rinsed & they can't conjure up something good to say (earlier this year in particular).
To be honest, I find those kinds of regional broadcasts horrible if they seldom talked about the opposition. I know all about the Leafs. I like hearing about the opponents.

But in any event, here’s the rough breakdown of regional and national broadcasts. This has been the case since Rogers took over the national contract in 2014

SN: ~40 national games
SNO: ~16 regional games
TSN4: 26 regional games

TSN is unlikely to replace Miller with Bowen given that they dumped using Bowen for Leafs regional games back in thr pre-2014 games when Sportsnet was still using him in that capacity. So, even if Sportsnet returned to using him for Leafs regional games, it would only be for about 16 games a year.

As for regional blackouts, the Leafs regional games are only available in an area from the Manitoba border to a line that runs roughly from Belleville to Pembroke. That region has a population of ~12.8 million or roughly one-third of Canada’s entire population. with a population that large, there is going to be a significant number of non-Leaf hockey fans, so it kind of make sense to present a slightly more neutral broadcast.

imo I don't think he was taken off leafs broadcast because of the homerism or being overly excited. he made constant mistakes with players names, I felt like half the game I was correcting him and it was terribly annoying, and then there were the stories that would go on for about 2-3 minutes and coupled with the laughter he wouldn't even call a couple minutes of the game because of it. his excitement of goal calls are awesome but the rest was really annoying to hear. don't know what he's like on the radio in regards to this but those were his main draw backs as a play by play guy.

Does Simpson do any regional games? He doesn’t even do all of the national games. Gary Galley does some of those.
Galley funny enough delivers the same kind of balanced commentary...o_O...hey wait a minute you don't think, that they actually mean to do it that way do ya?:laugh::laugh:

It's such an obvious choice, I don't get why they don't and don't tell me its because he's a massive homer, most home town callers are.

He brings so much life to the games, i just don't get it. In the playoffs I literally sync my audio with the radio just to hear him. He is bar down, hands down, the best.
I want my hometown play by play guy to be a massive homer. It brings so much more to excitement to the game. Besides, every other team's hire massive homer. Also, he seems relatable to me - like going out and watching a game with buddies.

Personally a huge fan of him. I think for what the NHL is trying to do it doesn’t work. Then again neither does Jack EDWARDS but Bruins dgaf

I love Joe Bowen and wouldn't mind having him back on some of the regional broadcasts. I find his calls more lighthearted and kinda like watching the game with a friend at the bar. Back when he was still on TV it sounded like he was at the bar lol 😆. I'm tired of the leafs regional broadcasters going out of their way to not sound biased because they know people will clip the show and post it even if it's a regional broadcast.

But he is pretty much the same as Jack Edwards but for the leafs.

This is the real reason he is relegated to radio. I remember back when he was still on TV there was a thread on here of people complaining about how much he messes up, can't get the names right, and wanted to get rid of him. I distinctly remember one time him rambling about which arenas have the best wings while play was going on 😆. Back then the leafs were so bad it was nice to have a distraction from the game lol.

Love the guy and wouldn't mind having him call the odd regional game but fully understand why that will never happen again.

First, he is nothing like Jack Edwards... that is an insult to any human being. Shame.

Second, he does not do TV because back when SN got the national contract, both networks were making decisions on their play by play teams. Joe made it clear, he wanted to do ALL regional Leafs games on TV, or none. TSN agreed, but SN refused, deciding to rather use their highly procured talent, Paul Romanuk anyone... So, since Joe could not do all the regional games on TV, he made the choice to not take the TSN job and focus solely on radio.

I long for the days of having a homer call our games, and show excitement like us fans. I like Gord and Chris; they are pretty neutral, but call a great game imo. I also loved Ray, and like Mike and Craig doing the colour commentary. I actually prefer Gary, he is more genuine... but none of those guys are Leafs fans... the closest might be Chris Cuthbert. Sadly, I don't ever see this changing, so I have accepted it, but do seek out highlights with Joe's call for big moments. He would have been giddy with Marner getting that point tonight.
