Bowen was a great regional broadcaster, he is big time Leafs homer. I didn't mind his comedy at times either - he had great chemistry with Harry Neale and Greg Millen when they did TV. I do in a way wish he was still doing regional games, but there is no way he should be national games. National broadcasts are supposed to be neutral. Sorry...but the hockey world does not revolved around the Leafs. Yes, they are typically the national spotlight, hence why CBC/SportsNet chooses who they do for the broadcasts, and will send what they deem to be their best to do the Leafs games.
There is no anti-Leafs conspiracy in the broadcast world. Stop crying victim and looking for things that don't exist. I never found Hughson anti-Leafs when he was still doing games for CBC. Remember...it's called Hockey Night in Canada, not Leafs Night in Canada. I loved Bob Cole, but he retired - he was a neutral game caller, and a great one.
Every team has their broadcast team that is a total homer for that team, be it Edwards (Boston on NESN, which is a regional broadcast), Mickey Redmond (Detroit region - talk about a homer), Jeanneret was the worst homer, again for Buffalo region. We have Bowen.
What more do you want?
As an aside - I did meet Joe Bowen at ACC, had a brief chat - great guy. Also......one time I was out of town one summer about 20 years, and my buddy was volunteering at a local charity golf tournament. I had just got engaged. There were a lot of hockey guys at this tournament, GM JFJ was there (his Dad lived out his final years here in Windsor), as was Bowen. My buddy talked to Joe Bowen and had him call me at home (my land line), but not being home, it went to my answering machine. Bowen left the most awesome voice mail, complete with a joke about getting married, and at least one Holy Mackinaw.
