Leah Hextall was a full time PBP commentator on ESPN for last couple of seasons. I don't think she did any game this year though.

On the NBA side, Lisa Byington has been doing full time PBP for the Bucks on Bally Wisconsin since 2021.
Swear I heard her doing Yotes or Stars on TNT.

The absolute worst thing about hockey journalism and Toronto is this inane belief that national broadcasts have to be "neutral" just give the people what they want, and get someone covering the team/calling games who actually enjoys them.
All this effort to not seem favourable towards the Leafs and people out here complain and complain about how Toronto-centric hockey is in Canada. We had Hughson, Simpson, and Healy calling games and still they said the broadcasts are pro Leafs. There is no pleasing these people, so why bother?

Both Bell and Rogers didn't want him and still don't.

I think he's going to retire.
Incorrect. TSN was okay to have Joe do games on tv. SportsNet said no. Joe wanted to do all Leafs regional games on tv or none. So, when SportsNet said no, Joe said he will do all the games on radio.

Dreger once said they treat their regional Leafs coverage as national broadcast even after they lost the national rights to Rogers. That was the reason they used their own guys(Miller, Cuthbert)on Leafs games, if Bell wanted Bowen after 2014 they would've put him there.

I don't think you read what I wrote... Bell said okay for Joe to call the regional games, but because Sportnet said nope, Joe said no to TV, period.

The real MLSE is showing through, with the results of the Leafs, TFC, Raptors of late.
$$$$$$$$, names for headlines, ticket prices, merch and why win?
Even Sabres knew better with Ted Darling and Rick Jeanneret.
Joe is amazing, the best since Rex Stimers.

The real solution us to get rid of all these high pitched, squeaky voice announcers like Cuthbert etc (Hughson was the worst) and let Joe and Ralphie do all the games.

We have a bunch of neutral announcers on TV, it sickens me. I don't care how good a player on the other team is, he a bum in my eyes. Joe for TV, radio, for all games.
Holy freaken Mackinaw. We deserve enthusiasm not the bland crap we get now.
If not Foster or Bill then Joe.

Bowen and Ralph did an amazing job and for a lot of people will always be the voices of the team, myself included.

On a side note, wouldn't be the least bit surprised if both of the new commentators, if they are in fact replaced, are women. There's already at least one woman commentator in the league however they're paired with a man so it's really only a matter of time.

If they do go that rout I hope they do a great job and are embraced by the fans!!

My bet is a woman/man combo.

(Some may say this is a post to provoke people and it's not, it's to give people a chance to get on board with the idea so they don't have a meltdown if it does happen.)
And they will ose in the ratings by not bringing them back

Great, do we have io listen to more commentators who hate the Leafs on the home broadcast? As if it isn't already bad enough on TV with those two hacks.

~ Has a guy who refused to play for us call our games ~
Crazy, isn't it? You can tell he's cringing everytime he has to say a positive thing about the leafs. There's no passion AT ALL. He's gotten better but it's still really sad and strange. I'm 39, it was awesome listening to Bowen when he was the leafs regional TV guy. I was shocked when it was taken away.

When Hughson use to call our games I had to mute it or toss Joe and Ralphie on the radio and try to sync it. Who in their right minds prefers Craig Simpson?

Somebody set these guys up with a twitch account and get them to call games there on live stream. They had to watch games on TV anyways when calling playoff games (radio station wouldn't fly them out to road games), so why not just do the same thing but on the internet?

I am officially f***ing done with this organization if they don’t bring him back.

As if the constant playoff failures year after year after year after year after year weren’t painful enough, now they’re thinking of cutting the voice of the Leafs for the last 3 decades? That’s the final straw for me.
This woke ass piece of shit organization f***ing sucks little tiny dicks just to seem inclusive and shit

I'll never understand the affinity people have for Bowen. I like him as a person, he's clearly very sharp and good at play by play but I just can't listen to him. He became a caricature of himself over the years. Every single play call is a twine tent or gobbled up or a ric-o-chet or mackinaw or a hundred other metaphors he constantly uses. The guy started singing after the Leafs eliminated Tampa. I'm baffled why I seem to be the only person who feels this way. I wish him the best but I absolutely don't miss him doing Leafs TV broadcasts.

Bowen was a great regional broadcaster, he is big time Leafs homer. I didn't mind his comedy at times either - he had great chemistry with Harry Neale and Greg Millen when they did TV. I do in a way wish he was still doing regional games, but there is no way he should be national games. National broadcasts are supposed to be neutral. Sorry...but the hockey world does not revolved around the Leafs. Yes, they are typically the national spotlight, hence why CBC/SportsNet chooses who they do for the broadcasts, and will send what they deem to be their best to do the Leafs games.

There is no anti-Leafs conspiracy in the broadcast world. Stop crying victim and looking for things that don't exist. I never found Hughson anti-Leafs when he was still doing games for CBC. Remember...it's called Hockey Night in Canada, not Leafs Night in Canada. I loved Bob Cole, but he retired - he was a neutral game caller, and a great one.

Every team has their broadcast team that is a total homer for that team, be it Edwards (Boston on NESN, which is a regional broadcast), Mickey Redmond (Detroit region - talk about a homer), Jeanneret was the worst homer, again for Buffalo region. We have Bowen.

What more do you want?

As an aside - I did meet Joe Bowen at ACC, had a brief chat - great guy. Also......one time I was out of town one summer about 20 years, and my buddy was volunteering at a local charity golf tournament. I had just got engaged. There were a lot of hockey guys at this tournament, GM JFJ was there (his Dad lived out his final years here in Windsor), as was Bowen. My buddy talked to Joe Bowen and had him call me at home (my land line), but not being home, it went to my answering machine. Bowen left the most awesome voice mail, complete with a joke about getting married, and at least one Holy Mackinaw.

Wow, this is a shock if true. I didn't see this thread or heard about this, as I have not listened to the radio broadcast much this year.

I used to get cheap nosebleed seats for the Leafs from a friend 10-15 years ago, and it was under the media gondola at the ACC, and Joe Bowen would come down on a regular basis between periods and have a chat with the fans, shake hands, pose for pics etc. He was great.

He got screwed when he was relegated to the radio booth exclusively when Rogers got those media rights, or around that time.

For those who call him a Leafs homer, yeah he is, and a very proud one if you'd ask him he would probably agree. And they could have had him on regional broadcasts, and keep the "safe & neutral robots" for the national games.

Anyway, I hope this is not the end of the line for Joe Bowen. As many have said here, I became a fan of the Leafs listening to Joe Bowen call the games in the 90's. But I think if he isn't brought back, I'd imagine that he would probably start his own or join an existing podcast.

Thanks for the passion, Joe!

This man should be calling the games on TV. Only ever get to hear him on satellite radio when I’m driving and can’t watch on TV but he calls it 10x better than anyone I’ve heard on Sportsnet or tsn

If they don't bring Joe and Jim back it will be a travesty. Let them go out on their terms. They deserve that.

It just wouldn't be the same if the Leafs finally end the drought and win the cup and we don't have Joe Bowen for the call.
