What are you guys memories of him as a player in this organization? Was he any good?

When people think of Germany and hockey, its Draisatl and Seider. But Hecht and Marco Sturm was the generation before.

loved the guy as a player. Quiet, did his job well. He was reliable enough where people didn’t question the defensive side of the game for any of his lines. The perfect role player for a top 6 position. He played the game in a timeless way, in the sense that every team no matter the era would be looking for a player like him.

I’d take 3-4 clones of him right now on the Sabres and move off a lot of the players on the roster to do it and not think twice.

There's a pretty big gap between Hecht and the current group. He was fantastic at scoring from behind the goal-line.

I'd take one clone of him for the top 6. Hecht defensively on the wing allowed Briere to push offensively then later he was a good defensive matchup center. Loved Hecht in Buffalo, always appreciated what he did, even when he was getting slagged for his PP production (he was the net front and retrieval guy and so didn't get the handles of others).

Also, he used to use the heated blades and they make such a unique sound on a fresh sheet. I miss him doing solo work at the practice rink - that sound was so cool.

One of my favs from those earlier teams as well as a guy I loved to see adapt as he aged. Went from a Top 6 2 way winger to more of a defensive Mid6 guy on the wing and finished his career as a faceoff winning 4C. As someone mentioned one of the best at wrap arounds and arguably the best backhand in the league, bar Crosby, for a few years.

One of my favorites. Great possession player, dependable, solid, smart, nice backhand.

And he's responsible for this pretty cathartic picture.

I forgot how much of rivalry he had physically with Vinny Lecavalier. I think he gave Vinny a blackeye after one of their fights. They did not get along.

Having been on these boards on one way or another since 2003, I can tell you that he was pretty much universally loved here. Just a smart, hardworking, dependable player that could fit on any line (and make all of his teammates better)

That Dumont-Briere-Hecht line was just a thing of beauty, and Hecht did all of the unheralded work to make it go.
