we will if you have a better plan ..... ?

Post n run is his specialty. He won't offer a better plan. Even though I would of rather them not sign Hecht, it's only because of his health. Every other reason to sign him for 48 games is fine with me.

My preference for such a meaningless season would be to commit to development and valuable experience for the young players rather than a useless, short-sighted free agent signing. Not to mention this idea of Hecht as a capable center should have ran it's course years ago.

That's legit, i think it's a real concern. But there's no down side from a hockey point of view. Just his life, that's all. No, I know it's no joke. But if it's not Buffalo, he'd play somewhere. He's not quitting.

I'm assuming this signing is based on Hecht being reasonably healthy. If that is the case than I am more than fine with this.

A healthy Hecht can potentially bring a decent all around third line presence. Even more importantly, he can play the center spot competently. He's experienced, brings a measure of leadership, and is a generally good influence. At worst hes a solid depth player, at best he's the experienced, defensively responsible third line center we needed. The deal is for only one year and we didnt really have other options, I dont see how this move can be criticized.

I'll be glad to see Hecht play in a Sabres uniform for one more season.

The fact that you call the season meaningless really adds to your credibility!

how is this season meaningless? A lot of underestimation of the Sabres skill around these parts. I fully expect, and see no reason why they will not make the playoffs. A second round appearance needs to be the minimal goal. A lot can happen, but a lot also depends on Miller. He plays well, Sabres score some goals, and this could be a very good year.

On that note, I don't recall seeing any power ranking or season prediction that leaves the Sabres out of the playoffs. That may not mean much, of course, but it does go to show that we tend to be a bit more down on our team than outsiders. Perhaps we're right in it, but there's no reason to think the Sabres can't have a successful season. A successful season at this point, I think, means getting to the conference finals, but at the very least means getting out of the first round.

It all comes down to the gamble of a top 6 centered by Hodgson or Ennis. If it works out great then the team will be better than most of us imagined. If they aren't ready then we could be sniffing the lottery. I don't see anything else having nearly as much bearing, outside of Miller.

1M base (and cap hit), with 250K in performace bonuses for Games Played. Pretty much ideal scenario...if he gets broken and doesn't last the season, he doesn't get the extra money...so risk is mitigated somewhat.

Zero gamble really. I like it. I still want another centre

If ever we get a day when everyone is healthy, and Grigs were to make the team...

Vanek-Hodgson-Pominville
Foligno-Ennis-Stafford
Leino-Grigs-Ott
Gerbe-Hecht-Kaleta

If nothing else, that's at least some very nice depth.

These are apparently the exact lines Ruff has in camp, with a fifth line of Scott-Ellis-McCormick. Granted, I'm not exactly sure what it means to "have" those lines as Gerbe and McCormick are not able to do full practices, but that is what Woodhouse reported in the training camp GDT.

a player that is (as far as we can see) a great character guy with tons of experience and a center resigns for 1/3 his old caphit.

nice :)

I like the move.

- Low risk center depth when necessary
- Key piece to the team's PK
- Reliable defensive forward when you need to lock things down

it is an even better move at the price, IMO
