Confirmed with Link: JJ Peterka Traded to Utah for Michael Kesselring and Josh Doan

who is replacing Peterka's 30 goals ?
Quinn is training hard this summer. I'm sure he'll be healthy and look amazing. Fourth time us the charm or whatever!

I'm relatively ok with the trade. It saves a lot of yacht money but for once the return helps the team.
Cozens for injured cap dump, Reinhart for scraps, ROR for negative value etc. were way worse.

This time we got a rhd that maybe could play top 4 and a power forward that will provide something we really need in terms of muscles and effort.
We've finally replaced Myers and Girgensons!

I think they move Byram and utilize Dahlin and Kesselring as their top pairing.
Dahlin can play with anyone and he'll be fine, but we've been looking for someone like Kesselring to play with Power for three years now.

We'll see, but that's how I see it:

xxxx/Dahlin - xxxx/Dahlin
Power - Kesselring

I think my biggest issue with this is that Kesselring was bought at his highest value. Hopefully he can replicate what he was last season in a Sabres uniform. I don't really expect much from Doan.

This seems like it's a 2nd round pick light of a return for Peterka. Maybe more but RHD is the hardest position to obtain so probably not.
As long as Kesselring is paired with someone better than Ian Cole, he will easily exceed what he did last season.
Doan is a lot better than what his stats show. The last time he was sent to Tucson, it was not because of his play in Utah, but so he can work on his overall game. He came back and was great at the role that was asked of him, as a defensive forward (Crouse McBain Doan aren't going to generate much offense). Very versatile and a high IQ. If you are not expecting much out of Doan, you will be pleasantly surprised.

Well ... that was definitely a trade of some players.

I was saying trade Peterka last off season. This feels like what we should have got then ... not after JJ delivered more this year.

This club does a good job of having good players. Beating down their will to live, then trading them for less than their value.

When will Adams say to a player "you don't like losing? We'll f***ing do something about it then!" instead of seemingly saying "oh no, I'm sorry to hear that, making you happy is the most important part of my job so I'll find somewhere nice for you so you can be happy and score more points and goals, and win cups."

Well this was interesting news to wake up to.

This thread meltdown is so unjustified, holy cow. We are a better *team* now than we were at 11 pm yesterday.

There is some mighty undervaluing of Kesselring in this thread. He was always an ideal target. Is the value perfect? No. I agree with @Zman5778 that we could’ve squeezed Utah for one more piece, but we got two really solid guys who will contribute this year.

Scoring hasn’t been and will continue to not be our problem. Defense/toughness/compete are where we need to improve, and we have with this deal.

I’m happy with it.

WGR opening this morning: The Sabres and Adams caved on JJP. In one week the narrative went from they don't want to trade JJP, to their listening to offers, to traded for Kesselring/Doan.

They did not get better

They did not want to pay him 7.7M

There are not spending to the cap again

They want to be tougher to play against

An offer sheet was likely coming and at 7.7M from Utah, they did not want to match it, the return would of been a 1, 2, and a 3

It's too early to say, but it's at least debatable.

I wouldn't want to pay that much either, or maybe he asked for 8-9 million from Buffalo? Who knows.

Again, it's too early to say, there hasn't been a draft or free agency yet. If they don't do anything else, then yes, you can say that, but I think we'll have to see.

Am I the only one who likes this trade? Kesselring is blossoming into an excellent top 4 shutdown type who plays physical and also can actually exit the zone (unlike a lot of similar players), and Doan is a fantastic forechecker and net-front player who can play in the middle 6 and has some upside. The complete lack of these kind of players—not skill—has been the biggest thing killing this team in recent years.

Also, it’s been mentioned elsewhere, but JJP had a stupid high on-ice sh% last year. Adams might be making a smart play to sell high on him.

I will concede that the trade return does help us a lot more than the potential offer sheet return would have, if we were pretty sure Peterka was going to sign somewhere else to a deal we wouldn’t match. $7.7 AAV is a lot for him.

A few more thoughts and observations after a nap

JJP's defensive play and data was abominable, Jeff Skinner like and he hurt them more than he helped. Did he check out to eventually get traded ?

He was not great on the PP

Sabres will miss his speed

He is 23

I would of preferred Crouse or McBain over Doan

A pick swap would of rounded the deal out. If Utah still gets Brady Martin at 4a fter this trade that's and amazing week for them and Armstrong!

Not getting either of those makes this deal sting

The last Walsh client he pulled this with was Jonathan Drouin and Tampa got Sergachev back who is now with Utah

The fan base outside of HF is not happy first 3 calls into wgr: its embarrassing, another deep wound, and cancelling season tickets

In the end it was NOT about going to a bigger city like NYC or LA, he went to a smaller city in a Dry state (unless at a private club or the arena) than Buffalo it was about 50M.

How long before Tuch & Dahlin bail out now ?

I'm surprised at the overall response to this trade in this thread. This is a strong move from a roster construction perspective.

Fully agree. I think we’ve got a better hockey team this morning than we did last night. I also would not be surprised to see Doan do well in a bigger role and Peterka regress a bit statistically. I think this one’s gonna age similarly to the Savoie for McLeod trade.

I was shocked by how universally hated it was when I read through the thread.

Im not gonna bash it.

At first, a lot thought we lost the Byrum trade and the Savoie trade. So far so good on both.

Peterka could very well become a 40/40 or, guy Skinner-lite.

Look at it this way if you don't like the value -

Now it looks like the Sabres are in need for a top 6 winger, like a Peterka ya don't say?
Well when he shops for one he can say look, I just made a fresh comp for a top 6 winger.
4D chess set his own Market

JJP is a top line forward with warts/improvement needed. We got a middle D and a magic bean. Would have liked to see something else come back in return, even if it was 9 for 4. Maybe it works out, but now they have a big offensive hole to fill. Does Byram move for a forward?
