Proposal: JJ Peterka for Marco Rossi

I think a quick look at most top 6 players' utilization at ES will show that they played most of their minutes with other top 6 players.
I could see it happening though, since Hayton is 6'1" and seemingly good at face-offs. 2 things much more important than offensive production.

Hayton is really only productive when you put him between Keller and Schmaltz. And it works because between Hayton and Cooley, Cooley is not the one you want playing the tough matchups right now. Hayton obviously isn't as good as Cooley but he's more experienced and has a more well rounded NHL style game.

But it's interesting that people will talk about how Rossi is only productive playing with other top six players, ignoring the fact that guys like Hayton are only productive with top six players, to an even lesser degree than Rossi, and even Peterka was most productive with Tage Thompson, and his top linemates feature him, Alex Tuch, Dylan Cozens.

I mean, it should go without saying that players produce more when playing with other good players, and produce less when playing with worse players. But for some reason, it's used as a criticism of Rossi more than I've noticed for most others. Ultimately, the reason he's even with those players in the first place is because he earned that spot with his play. We've seen what it looks like when Rossi doesn't earn that spot, got sent back to Iowa two years ago, wasn't playing as much with Kaprizov and Boldy last season. So it's not like they just stuck him there for no reason.

As well, someone acquiring Rossi probably isn't doing so to play him in the bottom six with grinders. I mean they could but I wouldn't recommend that. He's going to play with other good players wherever he ends up.

Anyway, as for Hayton, he's definitely more of a 3C type, but he doesn't necessarily look out of place with top six players. I think that's pretty valuable, and I could see it working well with adding Yurov to the team next year. Hayton can help shelter Yurov, and then when Yurov does take off, it's no problem to move Hayton down to the third line.

I think Buffalo matches the 1st+3rd offer bracket (a shade under 7m) and Im not sure I want to pay Peterka 9+, nor do I want to give up a 1st, 2nd, 3rd for him in that comp tier, so I think he's safe from an OS.

There are worse ideas than dealing Peterka for a center though, and Rossi is that.

I don't see why the Sabres would trade Peterka, one of their few young players who showed a pulse last year. I think that they would far rather trade their 1st, or one/two of their other young forward prospects...thy've got a slew of "maybe's". I can also see Guerin not wanting those prospects, most of whom are of average size and physicality.

This is the answer I got earlier

I don’t think he’s untouchable, but he is obviously one of our more productive offensive players, and he’s an RFA with team control still. There have, however, been some tenuous rumors that he’s unhappy here, and his defensive play leaves plenty to be desired.

Sure, which is why my comment was directed to someone saying he was: "stuck on the 3rd and 4th lines playing with mostly plugs". Rossi is absolutely a top 6 player, which is why he was largely deployed with those guys on Minnesota.

It’s alarming to me that Rossi went from 18:16 per game in the regular season to just 11:08 per game in the playoffs.

Vegas plays big and heavy and often ices out smaller players - but the entire issue with Buffalo is getting bigger and nastier to play against.

Was Rossi’s bottom six usage just a perfect storm of Guerin’s self-fulfilling desire to boot him along with Vegas’ style or are we simply looking at the natural post-season flaws of a 5-9 forward who isn’t electrically fast?

Either way - I don’t see the fit in Buffalo. I think former 1st rounder Noah Ostlund could eventually provide a similar jolt of undersized playmaking and hockey sense, with a bit more tempo. I don’t think the Sabres should consider JJP a sacred cow - he has his warts…but moving him would take solving an actual problem.

I'd think about it, but I'd rather make the deal larger and include Brodin with other pieces from Buffalo going the other way, too.
Brodin isn't getting traded at all. he's not available. All of Minnesota's D is set in tone for next year, and they aren't going anywhere.

You fo realize goligno was drafted by Buffalo. The idea he won't eaive for Buffalo is fallacy
He made it clear he hated Buffalo and his time there and he would never play for buffalo again in an interview. So yeah, it's a fact he won't waive

You've replied to me a million times saying the same thing. Until you show me that you're Bill Guerin himself, I'll continue bringing it up because several other people on your team's board have indicated moving Brodin is within the realm of possibility.

Bill Guerin himself did say in his end of year presser that the defense is set and there won't be any moves there.

The people you're talking about were saying they'd like to move him, not that it's realistic that he is moved.

Because we need a heavier, 2-way presence in our top 6. Having two wingers who are unable or unwilling to play defensively responsible in your top 6 is not a recipe for success.
Were Eichel/Reinhart criticized of their 2way play in Buffalo? Just asking..

Moving JJ sounds stupid for Buffalo. Maybe coach him instead if he doesnt defend. For me, he seems like a guy you win with

He literally said it at year's end press conference. Fans opinion doesn't really mean much compare to a teams GM / President

Marcus was born in buffalo....tuch wasnt born in minneapolis.
a player can be born somewhere but hated it. He literally said in an interview because of what he experienced and the culture there being Miserable, He will never be okay with playing with Buffalo again. There's also Minnesota born players who see playing home as too much pressure. It happens
