Yes, he should have better playoff statistics.
Ok, I'll bite. Which team that he's had in front of him was good enough for him to prove anything?

What crap does he get?

Plenty. This contract is only going to amplify that. Just read the first page of this thread.
I'm gonna rehash what I said on the main trade board because he was taking just as much flak there.
Yeah, the term is maybe a year longer than I would have liked. Yeah, maybe he's overpaid by 500k. Pretty minor stuff compared to other things around the league. This would rank Howard 10th among caphits for goalies, not including guys like Rask and Bob due for even bigger raises this offseason. He's may be a middle of the pack starter overall, but he's getting paid like it.
These same people ripped Anaheim for locking up Perry and Getzlaf to, imho, pretty standard contracts. As a Detroit fan, I'm happy about this deal. It's not ideal but it's fair.
Also, comparing this to Luongo's contract is hilarious considering that deal takes him to age 50 or whatever. Howard will still be a serviceable goalie by the end of his deal, and if Mrazek is able to live up to his potential, this deal doesn't make Howard 'untradeable'.. I wouldn't be surprised by an NTC/NMC though. Holland hands 'em out like candy on Halloween. That may hurt in the long run.
Didn't he one year have like
Lidstrom(not far off prime)-Rafalski
Stuart-Kronwall
Ericsson-X(can't remember who it was)

that can be said about a lot of goalies, no?
price has never played for a good team, till now, and he is hands down amazing and probably top 3 goalie in the league
lundqvist for years played for an average at best team and yet he proved he was awesome
rinne has always played for just nashville who have never ever been good enough to get past the second round, no worse then detroit
miller and his buffalo sabares are not nor have not ever been a very good team since he has been there(maybe one season?)
not sure top goalies only get that way when and if the teams they play for are top 4 teams in the league/playoffs..

Since Mrazek is coming along so fast, I just hope there isn't a NTC so that we aren't stuck if he should boom.
I'm fine with this deal. I think Howard is in the 8-12 range for goalies in this league but on an giving day he could be as high as 5 or as low as 16 or 17. Goaltending is so close in this league now that any goalie on any given day could find themselves in tier 2 of goalies.
Howard has started the 8th most games, has the 8th best even strength sv% (a goalie must have started at least 20 games) and has faced the 9th most shots, the only reason his total sv% is so low is because his PP sv% is well below his career average this season. His career average for PP sv% is .890, if he had that this year his sv% would be .922. While not an earth shattering number it moves him into the top 6 for total sv%.
As for the term I'd rather have him then not have him and there's nothing wrong with having 2 #1 goalies. Mrazek is still going to be in the AHL for at least another 2 years, after which I'd say he'll be the backup in 3 years time, that means for years 4,5 & 6 we ride the hot hand. Mrazek played well in his call up but I don't want to roll with him just yet, and if he does prove himself it won't be hard to move Howard.
Since Mrazek is coming along so fast, I just hope there isn't a NTC so that we aren't stuck if he should boom.
