Don't think the kings are willing to take him on for this season and 2 more afterwards even @ 50% (~2.65M) given their current can situation. Someone would need to be traded just to make this work once Quick comes back in the new year. Doesn't make sense.

this, and as subsequent post notes, there are alternatives

One would be Raanta (1m per x 2) who Rangers can replace w/Skapski.

If LA fans want to go there, ok, but to keep it from hijacking, be sure to mention something like "... as compared to Howard, who -- even at half --- costs appreciably more, and the compensation would be like ....".

howard for greene

LA then leaves howard unprotected and he either gets picked up by LA, they trade him or they buy him out

either way at 3 million or less(whats the difference between greene and howard??) howard is at least a proven reliable #1 goalie

LA cannot take on that contract unless Brown is going the other way and we know the Wings won't do that. Would be dumb for LA to take on a goalie making that much with multiple years left. No thanks he is your problem and bad contracts are hard to move in the NHL and we already have our contract problem we don't want yours too.

Kings are screwed this season after losing their best player. Bringing in another teams backup goalie isn't going change much.

Depends on whether or not the backup can cut the mustard often enough.

they'll never rename the Vezina for Raanta:laugh:, but
a guy who can fill Hank's shoes on an extended basis is likely to be enough to hold the fort

You don't put a three year band aid on a wound that will be there for a few months.

Quick is good but best player.... Yea not even close. They have a few guys names Doughty and Kopitar thst are more in line with their best player.

Whoaaaa...people are severely underrating Howard in this thread.

Anyhow, he's not a great fit for LAK at the moment. Howard can fetch a lot when the time is right..... (i.e. longer term injury to someone's #1).

No, some people (ie. Wings fans) are severely overrating Howard's abilities and contract. Three years at almost 5.3 million for an average backup is going to be next to impossible to move. The only potential way to move him is if another awful contract comes back.

Nobody scores in L.A. I'd put good money down that he'd score more in another situation.

That's a gamble that Detroit, Can't afford to make though. We will stick with Howard for another year then and see how it goes next summer. Don't see Howard moving in the expansion draft but with only having 2 years left and if Holland is willing to retain some money maybe he can be dealt next summer. We shall see.

yeah.. even Pavelec would be a better option than Howard at this point...

when Quick comes back in December, that gives LA 11M worth of salary for the next 2.5 years... not worth it

Jimmy Howard is a better goalie than Pavelec, especially if a significant portion of his cap is being retained.

Even Calgary should have traded for a retained Howard this summer, Elliott was just a product of a great D in front of him, while Howard has played in front of some of the worst D in the league.

He isn't worth his full cap hit, but he's a better goalie than most people give credit for around here.

Unfortunately your Howard is our Brown. Good luck, better and cheaper options out there for the Kings

this. Howard is not what he was 3-4 ish seasons ago and is regressing (just like Brown), and his contract sucks in the same way Brown's does. no thanks!

not for the kings... the have Quick and wont be needing Howard for very long... unless you find a way to retain 75% of his salary, not worth it for the kings... and do I have to say that by the CBA/2011 you are not allowed to retain more than 50% on a contract

That's understandable if it still wouldn't work for the Kings (I'm aware 50% is max retain), mainly just wanted to point out he's in a tier above Pavelec, imo at least.
