Agreed. Understanding what they are is fairly easy, but their interpretation and application as fact is where things go wrong. Most people draw overly simplistic, erroneous cause-and-effect conclusions.

Feel free to take Daniels JR... please

I was thinking about this earlier - there is a pretty good chance that Daniels could make a very effective NHL. All we base his success/failure on is his ability to develop our prospect pool. Nothing ( that I've seen) has been about whether he can coach the game, get through to players, set up effective lines, PPs, PKs, manage personalities, etc.

We all look at it through the lense of "players from Charlotte who succeed in Raleigh."

I would venture to say this would be a win for Carolina, and a possible win for the Penguins, should Daniels get the job.

Good point S1C2. I have no idea how he is as a coach (x's and o's), but the requirements to "develop" prospects and ready them for the NHL are a key element of the AHL job that is a much smaller concern at the NHL level.

But it's not as if Daniels' Charlotte teams have been that successful on the ice either.

And wasn't Daniels an NHL assistant for a few years when he first retired? I forget exactly when that was.

That's true, but on the one hand, we state that:

1) The Canes drafting stinks
2) The Canes rush high pick prospects straight to the NHL (Staal, Ladd, Skinner, Faulk, Sutter, Lindholm)
3) The Canes can't develop players
4) The Canes ship guys/picks off to help the NHL team "now" (JJ, Alt, Dumoulin, etc...)

Then how can we expect to have talented AHL team?

Talent makes the coach no matter what we all like to believe here. Again, I have no idea what kind of coach (not talent developer) that Daniels is so I'm not suggesting he is/will be good or bad. Just agreeing with S1C2 that what we dislike him for (development) isn't what he'll be judged on for an NHL job.

If we are using advanced stats, there's no way we'd ever want Sutter back. As far as I can tell, his numbers were terrible the past 2 years in Pitt and they were always bad in Carolina also. When in Carolina (except 08/09), and even last year in Pitt, we could write it off to always going up against the toughest competition, but that's not the case this year.

Sutter's problem always has been linemates. He's always played 3C for teams with utterly ****** depth and his possession numbers suffer because he has atrocious wingers.

Fun fact: He was a positive possession player when on the ice with any of Jokinen, Neal, Bennett, or Dupuis this year. Shocking, really.

Penguins plan to request permission from Carolina to interview Jeff Daniels, Rod Brind'Amour next week, source says.

IIRC, gocanes88 was recently called up to the big leagues after extensive development time in Charlotte. We need to see what this kid's got, so we can trade him before he loses value.

Excellent. I'll put him through his paces so we can better see if he's got what it takes.

You can call up the Jets and pick on Tajh Boyd of you want.

Meh. Now that Tajh is in the NFL and no longer a Tiger, there's not as much reason for me to dog him. Besides, we all know that when it comes to mocking a team named "Jets," there's only one team that has a special place in my heart.

Really? I hadn't noticed that. Uhhh, you can call up the Jets and pick on Paul Maurice if you want?
