Jim Rutherford: Tinker or Thinker?

Rutherford’s an old-school GM who negotiates through the media. Yes, he absolutely is trying to make Quinn the bad guy because he knows the media will run with that narrative and the fans will follow, which will put massive pressure on the player. While a different situation, look at how Rantanen has gotten dragged the past year after sticking to his guns in negotiation. It can make life miserable for a player and changes the pressure dynamics for the front office.
What's his goal?

Trying to shame Hughes into re-signing?

I don't understand how this strategy does anything other than piss off the Canuck's best player, and lower his trade value at the same time?

Again it’s old school GM’ing. Make the player have to answer questions every single day, make him look like a jerk to the community, make him read the wrong kind of headlines about himself. Leverage the pressure to make him more pliable.

Is it the right approach, probably not. But JR has been doing this sort of thing for a long time.

The opposite. Keep disrespecting Quinn in the media and try to pressure Quinn to request a trade so he’s the bad guy.

Saying publicly that he wants to play with his brothers, he’s not answering his phone, and that if he doesn’t sign an extension in 2 years you’ll have to make Moves; that’s a passive aggressive way of antagonizing Quinn

Iron Mike trades everyone, tomorrow. Sometimes immedietly again thereafter. (Gelinas -> Sanderson -> Mayday)

Lou Lam just signs guys to max deals and they therefore become untradable. (pierre engvall lololol)

Trader Jim, is going to take 3 years to turn Horvat, Miller and Boeser into Hronek and Marcus Pettersson while tanking any and all value from Ep40 and Demko. At least he's preparing us and getting out ahead of a thing that was only spoken about behind closer doors, until he himself decided to tell the world.

I honestly liked the Keenan approach. Core is garbage, brand is damaged, everything must go.

Yeah I mean if my grandpa was running the Canucks he’d say dumb shit every single time he’s interviewed too.

People his age shouldn’t be in positions like this. But we’re a long way off from that conversation. It seems most Americans think JR is prime age considering who they choose as their presidential candidates.

Lot of posts that clearly don’t know anything about the Canucks. Rutherford is old and talks a bit too much, but his role is limited. He was managing the talks with Tochett and the practice risk issues but the result (or lack thereof) would have been the same no matter the manager. Alvin’s the GM and manages contracts and trades.

the main problem was obvious. We had two top 15 centres who both totally shit the bed. Show me a team that can afford to survive that. Unfortunately now we need Pettersson to recover and another top 6 centres who both which is very difficult to acquire. But the Pettersson issue that absolutely blew this team up wasn’t Rutherford, Alvin, or even ownership’s fault.

The Canucks' roster during the 2021–22 season. The roster at the time of Rutherford's appointment, included the following players:

Forwards:
  • J.T. Miller
  • Elias Pettersson
  • Bo Horvat
  • Brock Boeser
  • Conor Garland
  • Tanner Pearson
  • Jason Dickinson
  • Tyler Motte
  • Juho Lammikko
  • Matthew Highmore
  • Alex Chiasson
  • Justin Dowling
  • Sheldon Dries
  • Nic Petan
  • Phil Di Giuseppe
  • Brad Richardson
Defensemen:
  • Quinn Hughes
  • Tyler Myers
  • Oliver Ekman-Larsson
  • Luke Schenn
  • Tucker Poolman
  • Brad Hunt
  • Travis Hamonic
  • Kyle Burroughs
  • Noah Juulsen
  • Jack Rathbone
Goaltenders:
  • Thatcher Demko
  • Jaroslav Halak
  • Spencer Martin
  • Michael DiPietro

How's that make Quinn the bad guy when everyone has seen there was nothing negative with Quinn until JR said this all?

The only hate should be at JR

Is Jim Rutherford really improving the Vancouver Canucks, or is he simply tinkering without a clear direction? Since taking over, the veteran executive has made a series of trades, extensions, and roster changes, but it’s hard to say if the team and roster is actually any better than when he and Allvin took over. Fans and analysts are left wondering: is there a long-term plan in place? In an NHL where every decision counts, it’s fair to ask: Have the Canucks truly improved, or are they just stuck in a cycle of failure again?

What do you think, are the Canucks better off under Rutherford, or has the team taken a step backward? Would you trust him to navigate the rough seas the Canucks now face?

You be the judge.

A lot of the many trades he makes is fixing the errors he makes. Some may argue that’s a good thing, but it’s a lot mistakes to make
