Really won't have much of a feel for the kid until we see him in training camp, hopefully he gets into a couple exhibition games.
But he just turned 18, so expectations should be tempered, if he's for real, he'll probably make a huge jump the next two years. Just look at Catton, 7 months older, between his D-1 and D-0 seasons.
Center has become a premium position, and full-sized, two way centers who can skate are rare as hen's teeth.
He's already close to 6'0 190 so he should end up 6'0 200+
We know he's an elite skater.
He seemed to have instant chemistry with Michkov, but not sure that tells us much.
High IQ, work ethic bodes well, but intangibles only matter when they translate to play on the ice.

You keep saying that, but how else do you determine who to keep?
Past NHL performance is nice, but what about players coming off subpar seasons? Or players with a limited track record? Can't assume a one year wonder will repeat that performance. How about a player coming off injury?
Nor can you assume that CHL, AHL or SHL/KHL performance translates to the NHL - a lot of players who put up big numbers at lower levels fail to pan out.
So while past performance is useful information, you also need to see how they look at present, and that includes both practice and scrimmages (which fans only have a limited exposure) as well as exhibition games.
With Luchanko, a good pre-season probably won't make a difference, he'd have to be lights out to stick because he has no track record.

Every year you and the Flyers make grand proclamations about players based on these glorified practice situations and every year they're almost all wrong. I think you should adapt.

Luchanko is an unknown quantity because he only put up 74 points at 17.
But also notes that NHL scouts see the potential "to be an impactful top-six center."
So he's basically saying he's not moving Luchanko up until he sees how he produces at 18.
If Luchanko puts up 100+ points he probably moves up a few tiers.

The evidence generally shows that if a guy is 18 and not McDavid, Mathews, MacKinnon, Bedard...
send them back.
"Holding your own" at 18 is a recipe for being risk averse and not developing offensively/being delayed development wise. Treading water and trying to simply avoid making mistakes is not where you want a talented young guy to be.

Heck, guys like Lafreniere, Kakko, Kotkaniemi, Zadina had a lot more "talent" than Luchanko, were rushed, and look at what is happening/has happened.

There are people who get paid to design those and sometimes I think even I could do a better job.

100% agree, said this here and his prospect thread, at most give him 9 games, give him a huge confidence booster, let him know they believe and let him dominate his peers. Next year could be his year to crack the team, no reason to rush him.

I think is it funny how much people are dissing Guelph and their staff etc as not being as good a place to develop...
do they know Corey Stillman is the HC now and his reputation and record as a development coach for forwards?
Record wise he is probably a better development coach than anyone in the Flyers org tbh.

That is categorically false. Cates produces offence in like the bottom 20% of NHL players, and giving him more speed isn't going to make him a better scorer. See: Bailey, Justin

No, he doesn't. He produces offense like a typical 3C, but he's an top defense center, with Luchanko type speed he'd be top 5 Selke every year. Speed is the one thing Cates lacks.
Interesting that they have him playing center with Foerster and Brink while Laughton is the 4LW.
They've been doing that for almost a week in practice.
