I mostly just look at it as getting in. Considering the grind of an 82 game schedule, there is little gained by getting in by a lot or getting in by a little.

100% this ^

At the end of the day the NHL is pretty evenly matched so we are going to face a tough opponent in the 1st round. There are no brownie points for over qualifying for the playoffs. The fact the presidents trophy winner rarely if ever win the Stanley cup is evidence of the play offs is a new season.

While that's true, I generally find teams that are top -10 overall in the league are almost always the ones that end up meeting in the Stanley Cup finals. Sometimes, the occasional exception happens when a terrible coach is replaced partway through a massively underachieving season allowing the team to qualify for the playoffs but outside the top-10 teams overall. 2 examples are the LA Kings and St Louis Blues.
