Jets Upcoming Free Agents

I don't know what to make of this. If we take it at face value he hasn't presented his best offer yet. I'd question why this is essentially going to happen a month prior to FA.

Why didn't this happen during the season?

The more cyclical view is he put this out there to tell the public they made a compelling offering he chooses to go elsewhere.
Chevy might have wanted to see what the cap was going to be for sure or at least a better idea of it in order to put the Jets best offer out there to Ehlers.

Not to mention that the conversations would’ve been very different if Ehlers scored zero goals and two assists or something like that in the playoffs

Personally I read it as he already has one foot out the door. He was given more usage this year and if he still needs to think then that to me indicates he's not fully happy here and is very open to other places.
I've said it for two years now, he wants top line minutes and top line money. Someone will give him both. I'm sure he likes it here and the guys but he wants to be 'the guy'. I think someone will blow our offer away either way and he won't have a choice.

Maybe he'd prefer to win a cup

If Ehlers is "the guy" on a team, they're not serious contenders

Jets have $25.5 million cap space they can keep everyone if they want too but the Jets will still have the same problem no 2C.
My question is would the Jets be better off with a Sam Bennett or Brayden Schenn type center than keeping everyone and status quo?

They’d be better off with either of these guys.
Personally I'm not too sure about that, but lets say that's true. What's the plan then, let Ehlers walk in free agency and hope you can grab one of these two guys? That's quite a gamble when you're likely looking at no Ehlers and neither of those options panning out.

I don't think it's an either/or situation with $25m in cap space. It's an issue of, A) does Ehlers want to stay, and B) could you get a player like that on the market somewhere.

Schenn is well into the Corey Perry "remnant of talent, but mostly just a cheap shot artist" phase of his career.

He offered little in 6/7 games except airborne hits late or away from the play.

I was only commenting on the poster's comment which was an either/or.

That being said, if this is the scenario:

Ehlers is willing to sign, but only on a 8x8.5M contract. Do you sign him and not upgrade your 2C due to cap constraints, or do you let Ehlers walk and try to land a coveted 2C in free agency? Seems like a big gamble to me. With our track record in free agency and players willing to come here, I highly doubt we'd be able to land a free agent replacement that will provide us with better results than Ehlers.

The timing makes it tricky, as if the ball's in our court regarding signing Ehlers, if we choose not to sign him before July 1st he's likely gone to free agency. It's not like we can see what our options in free agency are first and then make a decision on Ehlers afterward.

I just think it's a big gamble, and if Ehlers is willing to sign at that contract I would personally sign him rather than take a chance at maybe signing a free agent who may or may not provide similar/better results.

Also if he's still good why would St. Louis trade him. They are going to be gunning for the playoffs again next year.

8m x 8 for Nik is extremely fair even with the cap going up, he doesn't warrant a bigger contract than Fefe or Helle. It's entirely possible that on the open market he gets much more and I can understand if the Jets have to bow out at that point. Jets need to make their offer as soon as possible, find out where they stand and go from there. If they are far apart try and get whatever you can from a team that would have a greater chance of signing him.

Things can change after the success the Blues had making the playoffs, which they really weren't suppose to until they went on their surge... But the Blues did try and trade Schenn to the Leafs. It was Schenn who nixed it.

Is that what happened? Genuinely asking.

I sort of recall the speculation being that Armstrong put a silly price tag on Schenn (to the tune of 3 1st rounders) -- because he really didn't want to move him, and if he did have to cross the bridge of asking him to waive, he wanted it to be a no brainer type of deal.

By putting a 3 1st price tag on Schenn obviously he isn't going anywhere, lol.

The link to the Leafs was reported... and not just the Leafs , but Schenn did say this:

"It's no secret where my name was, tossed around. Just people texting me literally daily. Part of the business. Obviously, a little tough to deal with. At the end of the day, I've always said, I love being a Blue. I love playing here. I feel like we've got a good thing going on, and we're going to make a push to the playoffs. I feel I couldn't go out there and quit on my teammates. It's important for us to keep on taking steps here and we're going to do everything we can to get in."

I didn’t mean to get Schenn … I said center type. A big gritty centerman who knows how to play playoff hockey. I would rather have a Bennett clone player than a speedy winger for the playoffs. Don’t get me wrong I like Ehlers and would keep him over Vilardi but the missing piece is a big gritty C2 center the Jets need first.

In the Chevy and Arniel interview from today, Chevy said he spent a couple hours meeting with Ehlers' agent earlier this week. My guess is they have a very good idea right now where each side stands. The problem for us fans is we have no idea where that is.

And yet when asked about Connor Vilardi Samberg Lowry contracts he said the money part will take care of itself. So it sounds like they want to be with the Jets and Ehlers doesn’t.

I think the ball is in Nik's court, especially after what we heard from Chevy today, but it's more than likely he's going to explore FA at this point.

The meeting on Monday with his agent feels like Nik and his camp getting an idea where the Jets stand one last time to process and chew on. I just expect that if he gets to July 1, in a pool of pretty lackluster FAs out there, he will be extremely coveted and will be paid handsomely -- there will be no circling back to the Jets.

I hope I am wrong, but regardless, I really wish him nothing but the best either way. Total class act.

The Blues at the TDL were outside the PO's so not surprised they were seeing what the value of their players were.
