With Alex Iafallo and Neal Pionk re-upping in consecutive days, I thought it might be interesting to open up a thread to discuss our remaining UFAs and RFAs. I am looking forward to discussing who we might re-sign (and at what AAV) and who is likely to move on from the Jets. I'd also like to expand this talk to include our prospects, including which ones might make the roster next year, and what openings we will have, in light of our free agent situation.

Here's a tidy recap of our pending free agents:

UFA
Nikolaj Ehlers (coming off a seven-year contract worth $6M annually), 29 years old
Brandon Tanev (coming off a six-year contract worth $3.5M annually), 33 years old
Mason Appleton (coming off a three-year contract worth $2.16M annually), 29 years old
Haydn Fleury (coming off a one-year contract worth $775K), 28 years old

RFA
Gabriel Vilardi (coming off a two-year contract worth $3.4M annually, has arbitration rights), 25 years old
Morgan Barron (coming off a two-year contract worth $1.35M annually, has arbitration rights), 26 years old
Rasmus Kupari (coming off a two-year contract worth $1M annually, has arbitration rights), 25 years old
Dylan Samberg (coming off a two-year contract worth $1.4M annually, has arbitration rights), 26 years old

Keeping in mind we have Kyle Connor, Adam Lowry and Cole Perfetti (among others) coming up for renewal next summer.

I believe, and someone can please correct me if I'm wrong, that we currently have about $25.5 million in cap space going into this off-season.

Curious, as always, to read some of the board's thoughts.

All those UFA’s are gone IMO
I am hoping for a Vilardi and Samberg long term extension.
Not sure Vilardi is happening though
I would be content a Barron mid term extension (3 year)
Don’t care either way about Kupari

There is mutual respect on both sides with Chevy and Ehlers. Letting him qualify Denmark to the Olympics I'm sure that's something that Ehlers is grateful for. He'd have to leave money on the table to stay here, agents don't like it, but Ehlers has a choice, he's earned it after 10 years.

Chevy has picked off his UFAs starting in the mid range, short term deals. Pionk's makes way for Samberg's extension in the offseason. Which is probably the longest term.

Vilardi's will be interesting because of the possibility of arbitration.

Barron's next contract should be easy.

Appleton I think his future rides on the playoffs.

Tanev is a freebird. He could play on any team and be a glue guy. Chevy paid a high value to bring him back.

Fleury might have found a home to stay in the NHL.

I think the org would do the same for any player that is signed with them. They realize they have to treat the players with a great deal of respect for them to want to stay.

It will be interesting to see how the Ehlers situation plays out. It really could go either way imo.

I think the Jets offer Tanev a fair contract and he stays. I agree the other 3 guys are likely gone.

Chevy is old fashioned, in a good way, I would not be surprised to see him let Ehlers hit FA if Ehlers was not willing to extend.

Focus on Villardi, Samberg, Lowry, and Connor first - lock them all up with term
Kupari and Barron in the next tier,
Fluery is a good depth guy but it becomes more of a logjam with Salo encroaching into the big league, so will see if he accepts the Toninato treatment in embracing the Moose leader/depth guy on the big squad
Apples, Tanev and Ehlers walk, Lambo on the 2nd line & Chibs with Lowry and Nino
Heinola will have to be moved

Have a feeling that all UFA's are walking, Nik has had more than enough time to re sign yet nothing got done during the season and now other deals are getting done, Tanev took off before, Fleury is a dime a dozen, and Apples should be replaced very easily. Just a note on Apples it seems that Arniel really likes him so who knows.

I expect we see deals for the rest outside of maybe Tanev in the next day or they are gone.

The Jets won't be doing any contract discussions while the playoffs are front and center imo.
 
UFA

Nikolaj Ehlers ( Mixed feelings... like what he brings when healthy enough to play, but I wouldn't want to sign him for more than 4 years. But given his age , players like him want their last career contract to be like 8 years, so I don't know )

Brandon Tanev ( Keep him ) 2-3 years ideal

Mason Appleton ( can go )

Haydn Fleury ( can go )

RFA

Gabriel Vilardi ( Keep him )

Morgan Barron ( Keep him )

Rasmus Kupari ( don't care either way )

Dylan Samberg ( absolutely keep him, whatever it takes )

Nikolaj Ehlers - need him but may be the most difficult to sign

Brandon Tanev / Mason Appleton / Morgan Barron / Rasmus Kupari - probably cant sign everyone...good role players for 4th line...are there any replacements in the works? Chibrikov and He?

Haydn Fleury - let walk

Gabriel Vilardi - priority

Dylan Samberg - #1 priority. Nobody can replace what he does

I've lived in Winnipeg most of my life and I don't dig the weather here either lol

One thing that stuck out from Pionk's media availability is how his wife loves it here and has made lots of friends

Hopefully the younger guys and their gals (Samberg, Vilardi, Perfetti) have bonded as well. I know at one point Perfetti was dating Samberg's sister (maybe still is)

I also know it was Frolik's wife that torpedoed him signing here

All we got is the vibes. There are no sworn affidavits. No one puts out a press release saying "GET ME THE F*** OUT OF WINNIPEG!"

Anyway, some resident HF Instagram follower noticed Vilardi's wife seemed a little displeased with the weather and noted she's from Southern California.

In all honesty. Most people, especially those not from Manitoba don’t care for the weather.

Minnesota people seem to get along just fine in Manitoba. Michiganders it's hit and miss (Hellebuyck and Connor are cool with Winnipeg, Trouba and Copp are not).

Yeah but SoCal's weather is objectively perfect. It might come as quite a shock to many Californians that 800,000 people live up here on the edge of civilization in a city with no freeways and whose climate is approximately "Frozen Hell" compared to LA.

I mean, some pretty much do (Kane, Trouba, McGroarty). 😁
