Not sure I asked my question very well. It would apply equally to every team. I'm wondering about some details of the system.
Top picks tend to be signed soon after the draft unless they are going to play in NCAA. Lesser picks from the CHL tend to be signed later. They need to be signed within 2 years or they go back into the draft pool. But aside from that deadline, what are the reasons to sign a player at any specific time. The rules are a little different for Euro players so they are frequently signed when they decide to come to NA.
KHe is an example that makes me ask, why now? Reward him? OK, if he gets his signing bonus. Otherwise it is just a pat on the back.

He does get the signing bonus immediately and he can be called up in an emergency - but things would have to be pretty dire to call up a junior player...it happens occasionally though.

That article did not make it plain that they get their signing bonus as soon as they sign. It says the bonus is paid annually. If a player's ELC slides for 2 years and he has received his signing bonus in each of the 2 years it slid then he gets no signing bonus in 2 years of his ELC since it has already been paid. It seems more likely to me that the bonus is paid when the ELC kicks in. KHe's will slide for 1 year unless he plays 10 NHL games.
The late season call up may be the best incentive.
The signing bonus gets paid even if the contract slides. What happens if a contract slides for 2 years there is no longer a signing bonus in years 2 and 3 of the ELC.

Yes, I'm aware of the emergency call up. But normally, once a player is sent back to a CHL team it is for the season. Of course they can also be called up after their CHL season ends.
So, he gets the first year bonus on signing. That means that if his contract slides he gets no further bonus in the first year after the ELC kicks in.
I expect both Freij and Walton to now be signed to their ELCs by December 31.
I like this kid. I think the Jets really have something here. Top 6 material some day.
Even if he becomes “only” a bottom six player, and plays 200+ games, that’s a big big win for the Jets.

It’s hard to know for sure, but he is certainly having a great D+1 season and is well worth betting on him by signing him to his ELC. Also looks like he has a performance bonus package higher than most 4th round picks.

That’s the ongoing belief. Morrissey said that when he signed his ELC iirc. From personal experience when I was much younger I had a buddy that got drafted and signed his ELC and bought one nice ass truck. He never made it out of the AHL but for 3 years he drove to the NHL training camp in his truck.

no.pretty sure you get the signing bonus immediately.
"Signings Bonuses are paid upon signing a contract, or paid out on July 1 of a contract year. Signing bonuses are similar to salary as both are guaranteed. "
the July 1 payment is for returning players on full contract so last years cap isn't affected by the extensions.
I remember hearing someone talk about having $150 in thier bank account and then suddenly having "MONEY" and the CHL teammates made him buy dinner etc.

Not to argue the point. I'm still unsure. If a player slides for 2 years does he get paid that bonus in the 2nd year?
If a player signs later so there is no sliding of the contract then it is clear the bonus would be paid on signing. But something does not add up for players whose ELC slides, either for 1 year or two.
As it is a 'signing bonus' it seems logical that it would be paid on signing but that leaves some fuzzy issues. If the ELC slides is the second signing bonus paid out on the anniversary of the signing, the next July 1 or July 1 of the 2nd year?

why would you get paid a signing bonus twice? It's a one time cash bonus.
you get the signing bonus when you sign the contract, not every year of the contract. the slide, and performance bonuses are different issues.
