I don’t hate it. I agree that we need NHL-ready LD, we have a strong prospect pool but they aren’t ready to play 20 minutes a night and the only LD signed for next season is Oesterle. Stanley-Seider could be a pretty punishing pair...

I struggle to see a player with 77 games played at 14 minutes a night as a solution to detroit's need for an established LD.

Sure, we need two, he could be ready for a larger role and fill one spot. I’m not convinced either.

I don’t think many in hockey would agree with your assessment of his two way game and compete level but I don’t watch him enough to form my own opinion but if that’s the case nvm then

Most Wings fans who don’t even like Zadina agree he’s got a solid two-way game and has a great work ethic. And it’s consistent too.

Detroit could have serious interest in Andrew Copp, as many other teams would. Whether it’s now via trade, or in the summer via UFA, he fits what they’re doing.

He’s an interesting player as many managers and scouts will still believe he could be a good 2C in the league. Something that’s just not going to happen in Winnipeg long-term.

However, value wise, most contenders would probably want more of a guarantee acquiring him at the deadline.

He’d be a great rental at 3C or bottom 6 winger for any contender’s playoff run, but with so much draft capital already spent by contenders in recent years, and cap concerns, will contenders really give up a ton to grab him, knowing their chance to sign him to a new deal will be minimal? Probably not. Maybe the Rangers? Maybe the Avs if they think Kadri moves on? Not many playoff teams though.

Contenders would probably opt much more for a cheaper Stastny than Copp.

Copp is also the exact type of guy Yzerman targets. His best opportunity to really latch onto a 2C role would be with an up and coming team like Detroit. An example of a team who could also give him more money on his new contract.

I don’t buy into that “He’s a local guy” thing to much, but if Copp and the Jets know he won’t be resigning, and Detroit is interested in acquiring Copp (extending him 3-4 years) to use him as that stop gap 2C, being a local kid can’t hurt and could help facilitate a quick signing.

For Detroit, with Rasmussen quietly evolving as a pivot at the NHL level, he may very well be their long-term solution at 2C everyone thinks they’re looking for. At worst he’s showing he’s a pretty good 3C and his hands are catching up to his brain at the NHL level. Like many bigger players, it takes longer for them to evolve into that Top 6 C and we’re starting to see more from him in that regard.

Bringing Copp in would give Detroit more options than having Suter currently in this role. Acquiring Copp would allow Rasmussen and Valeno to continue evolving and not having the problem of moving Suter into the bottom 6, as they’d lose the D Rasmussen or Copp would provide. Both are much more difficult to play against than Suter. Although Suter has been pretty good defensively, playing that role with his size in Detroit’s system, who relies heavily on their 3rd line to be more defensive than many teams, won’t work as well as a Rasmussen or Copp would.

If Copp takes that 2C spot and never looks back, it would end up another Yzerman type deal people talk about, and Detroit could do a lot worse than having Rasmussen at 3C. Having Larkin, Copp and Rasmussen as your top 3 Cs going into next year would obviously create more space for their shifty wingers than having Suter in there. Who’s a fine 2-3C but the size aspect does come into play. Especially in that division and with Detroit’s current class of wingers.

There’s also been talk out there recently that Detroit could move Suter. Whether that’s due to wanting Rasmussen or Valeno to get those minutes over the next year, or people are calling, who knows. A lot of teams would be interested in Suter right now if they need a 2C, or need more scoring from their 3rd line and are cap strapped. Having that extra year would mean a lot contractually. Especially if Detroit ate some of it.

So a deal around Zadina for Copp wouldn’t be a surprise at all. Gives Winnipeg a little cap relief as Zadina won’t be getting as much as Copp this summer, and it would give Copp that real shot at being a 2C in the league. Detroit could also add a variety of other options in the deal. From a pick or a prospect, they have the ammunition to make it happen. Turning it into a good deal for both teams. Especially if Zadina turns that corner.

It’s almost a given Copp is moved at this point. If he’s moved to a contender, it’s likely he moves again in the summer where a team like Detroit will be a likely landing spot. Generally though, when Yzerman wants a player, he goes and gets him when the opportunity is there. If he sees Copp as that guy for the next few years, he’ll trade for him and not wait for the summer.

Whatever the case, the Jets need to make it count on the return. Obviously it won’t be as much as he’s a UFA but they should still be able to get a nice return for a pending UFA. A package with Zadina might also be very appealing to the Jets.

To Detroit fans scared of giving up value for a guy who they might be able to get come the summer for free? You move on a deal if it guarantees you the player. Plus, what they’d get in return for Suter would compensate most of it. In many ways it’s moving bodies around but for the way their team is being built, Copp fits better than Suter does.

Something to keep an eye on.

Marek and Friedman have linked Andrew Copp to Detroit, So maybe there's some merit that Yzerman might make a splash for him. As for Stanley no thanks we've better players in our pipeline.

Wings farm is filled with LD who will be pushing for spots soon, don't need to be adding another body in the mix at the expense of a skilled young F which we have less depth of. Stanley seems to have pretty limited upside atp, not much intrigue here from Wings pov.
Wings farm also is filled with middle 6 wingers, who needs spot on the team

I do it as a Wings fan. Only Edvinsson looks like a lock to be a top 4 LD (and a good deal more at that) so getting a young, cost controlled and established LD would be a good swap in my mind for Zadina. Don't get me wrong, I'm fine with keeping Zadina, but our depth at Wing both now and long term is such that I think we can afford to make this move.

Stanley was linked to Detroit because he played for Windsor in Junior and they needed D during his draft year.. He doesn’t really fit what they’re doing but Yeeman has acquired some interesting Dmen over the years… so who knows. Not for Zadina though. I can’t see that happening.

Half the time when you watch Zadina, you just assume he produces more. That’s one of two things. He’s so hard on himself or he’s just unlucky. He just seems to shoot a second late or to soon. He really needs to relax out there. The skill is there.

One things, and it happens with young guys sometimes. He goes to the outside constantly. That rarely works in the NHL.

He really just needs to find his place in the NHL. The skill is there.
