Apples has several years chemistry with Lowry. I think we see a 3 year extension.

Doesn’t Draft and develop also mean keeping draftees for a long time. Draft, develop and retain at a fair price.

Team did win the presidents trophy.
Problem with retaining all of the role players at market rate is you're not fixing the 2C problem for next year.

Ideally they add a 2C and top 4 dman, but I don't think that can happen and still pay Ehlers, Vilardi, and Samberg this coming year. If Ehlers doesn't resign, then you have two holes in the 2nd line with only a young Perfetti remaining. Lowry isn't the answer for a 2C as he doesn't score enough, nor does his line generate enough to be a 2nd scoring line. Weibe throughout the idea of Lowry being a 2C and Names the 3C, but that isn't an improvement, and the Jets do need to get better roster wise.

Lowry also plays a highly physical game and isn't getting younger. How much longer does his body hold up given his style is anyone's guess.

I am happy that the Chevy repeatedly talked about the below 30 crowd as to where the growth would come from. I think management is aware that they have taped out the 30 plus crowd and are counting on the young players to improve and push it over the hump.

Time to move on is as soon as we have someone better. His cost is too small for that to be a reason for moving on.
Depends on the cap hit. I liked Apples 1.0 during his first tenure here. The secondary one not as much. That cost to keep him might cause a ripple effect for our CAP or final roster, or cause a waiver loss (keeping Stanley vs losing Chisholm or Kova for examples), when we may have a player in the pipeline, or via trade who fits the role as well or close too anyways. Maybe target a middle 6 with a scoring touch who would bury a wide open net in game 6, instead of a cross crease shot 2 inches off rhe ice that hits the goalie in the mitt. But I digress...lol

I’ve often referred to him as the right shot Dylan Samberg with a touch more bite. Appears the Jets bench boss agrees. I asked yesterday about the development this season of the 2022 2nd rounder.

GMKC:

"... we’re excited and again I think if he has a really good summer I think he’s someone that could force us to make some big decisions.”

Scott Arniel:

“We have a role model in front of him, for me, is Dylan Samberg. To me that’s the best part about it. Is we have somebody that we can talk to him about, we might have already talked to him about it, but again it’s just part of doing it the right way. Biggest thing is we want to make sure when he’s ready to go, he’s ready to go. We’re not force feeding this and I think he’s a good enough hockey player that he’ll find his way in.”

Full thing:

The reason for moving on from Apples is the disappointing scoring. Kupari is likely worse there. Lambert scores more but is less effective defensively. No net gain. Chibrikov might be a net improvement, maybe.
Iafallo more than fills his spot and adds more offense.

He made 2.25 mil this year. I don't see a raise in his future. That cap hit is too small to justify even a small downgrade at the position. Get a better player for similar or less money, great. But dumping a player making just over 2 mil for cap reasons doesn't make any sense.

Iafallo to the 3rd line and Apples to the 4th, or gone. So why wasn't it done that way this year?

Just guessing but I suspect Lowry likes Apples on his wing.

He probably does, but the org can't just keep spending a lot of cash on depth forwards. Imo we already made our bets with Lowry up in a year while extending Name, Nino, and Iafallo.

Iafallo is tough to judge since he’s moved all over the lineup.
If you look at points per 60, Appleton is down there with the 4th liners and quite far behind his linemates.
We definitely need to look at other options.

Not saying we don't need to look for better. Just can't see dumping him for cap savings as low as his cap hit is. You dump him for a better player, not for a slightly cheaper contract.

Iafallo might be the best option we have on the 3rd line, but how much of the season will he be available there? He will move up every time there is an injury in the top 6.

Axel Jonsson-Fjallby has packed his bags and signed a new contract over in Sweden.

Jets pending unrestricted free agent winger Axel Jonsson-Fjallby has signed a three-year contract with Brynas IF, in the Swedish Hockey League, the team announced Friday.

With Lowry's surgery, I can't see the Jets offering him any extension until they see how he actually plays next season. Even if he plays well - which is doubtful - I can't see him get anything close to the 5-year extension he previously received. Likely no more than 2 years if not year-to-year.

The Jets will give him a loyalty contract. It might not be smart but I expect them to do so.

A loyalty contract of 2 years is fine. There is no reason whatsoever to extend him until we see how he performs after he comes back from his injury in November. I have my doubts he will be the same player. Heck, he might not be the same player in 2026 anyways even if he didn't need surgery. By that point he will be almost 34 years old.

Excited for Salomonsson and Yager's arrivals to the NHL. Both players are exactly what we lack in our current lineup, though it will take a couple of years (100+ games) for them to get really start feeling comfortable.

With Lowry's surgery, Yager could start the season in the NHL depending on how his training camp goes, though most likely starts with the Moose. Salo could really push for an NHL job out of camp which seems to be what the Jets brass is hoping for.

Scheif/Names/Yager/Barron might be able to win some games before Lowry returns. There's also the possibility that Toews signs, though I'm not sure if he will make that big of an impact at 37. Though if he's a 1-year option that produces similar to Names, it offers Yager the opportunity to develop his pro game in the AHL for one year. If Yager can be a 20+g/35+a/55+pt player in a year or two, that would be exactly what the Dr ordered. Though, it's likely Scheif will start to decline then as well.

I think when these guys are off their ELC, that's when you can reasonably expect them to contribute in a positive way, in their projected roles at both ends of the ice. At least at the level of playing in the post season.

Will be great if we get to see them get some action this year. You're right, Lowry injury may help Yager get a cup of tea if he has a great camp.
