ok I kind of get baseball.

Why do you put Price in to pitch in an 8-1 game? Aren't you saving him for the next series if the Jays win? What am I missing?

It's to keep the closers fresh. Smart move in my opinion. You may have to go deep in that game so use only 2 guys for this game and come into the next game with a fully charged bullpen. Whereas texas is already 5 pitchers deep.

Looking for some input from you crazies.

I've been toying around with creating an extraskater / war-on-ice / hockeystats.ca type site. I have most of the DB work, classes, and business logic setup and ready to go, and can parse all the NHL game play-by-play data and store it in my own DB for further processing. I've been working on this off and on for the last year, as my work load has permitted.

I've played around with some UI concepts with a "toy" web app, that you can try out here:

http://www.armchair-gm.com/playoff_pace/teams/

Some background on this app: it maps out and tracks "playoff pace" for teams, something that the Florida board has been doing for about 5 years now, and something that I started doing about 3 years ago on HFJets (more info here, for those that are interested: http://hfboards.mandatory.com/showthread.php?t=1965325 - long story short, it's something that Keenan espoused for breaking up the season into little chunks).

So with that pre-amble out of the way, what would YOU like to see in an extraskater-like site? I've already decided that most of the UIs for these things suck. I'd definitely like to make it more graphical than most of what I've seen to date (my background is in visual arts - CG Film-making, matte painting, lighting, etc), and want to make it visually appealing and easy to navigate. I'd also like to try to add features that work for twitter, blogs, and forums, such as HFBoards (very painful to embed information into sites like HF).

Any ideas? Note that this is NOT a commercial project - I'm going to be releasing the source code to the open source to try to get a grass-roots effort moving forward on tracking and analyzing stats. I'm doing it mainly for my enjoyment, and to further my understanding of hockey stats, in addition to contributing back to the community.

Price will be good to go in the ALCS if they win tomorrow I'd think. I like how they did it because I have more faith in Stroman than Price TBH. Price has not looked that sharp, both today and in his start.

(If they win tomorrow) I go:

ALDS G5: Stroman
ALCS G1 : Estrada
ALCS G2: Price

First off, just want to say that it's awesome you're doing this! :handclap:

If there's one thing I'd like to see on an advanced stats site, it would be a better way of viewing line matchups throughout the course of the game. And perhaps some visual way of showing what the possession numbers were on any given shifts. So like the event chart they have war-on-ice.com (which is a pain in the ass to post here, that's another issue altogether ) and being allowed to "zoom in" on that event chart to gather more information about who was on the ice, the shot differentials when those particular players were on the ice, etc. for any given point in the game.

days off.
winning today versus losing today and having to go home.
Dickey's average versus the next 3 batters.

Saw the Martian tonight with the bf.

It was really good.

saw it too while the Jets played the Islanders that's why I didn't post in my GDT btw

I thought it was good but not great. Lacked dramatization, for a movie showing me a guy all alone on the mars for more than an entire year, I really didn't felt any fear or awe. I missed this feeling. It felt a little bit too lighthearted to me considering what it is about.

Ah yes: that's a cool little chart. But it's also a very little chart. :D

It'd be nice to be able to set the start/end of it quickly, and have it collapse to JUST the players on ice during that time period, for sure. Good idea!

The "hard to post bit" I'm working on - I'm looking to utilize an image site's API to enable you to quickly dump a version of a chart somewhere, and immediately get the bbcode to embed it on a place like HF, or onto a blog, etc. Not perfect, but a far sight better than today.

Interesting takes and thanks. I hadn't looked too hard at the days off schedule between ALDS and ALCS. Feels like Stroman hasn't had enough days between starts though? Either way I am out of my element so perhaps it's best to just sit back and watch.

I agree to a point, but that just wasn't that type of movie. It was meant to be a lighthearted fun science movie. It did what it set out to do. The movie you are looking for is Moon. Go see Moon it is amazing.

I really enjoy movies where real scientists are the heroes. Not crazy ridiculous things to support the main heroes but just good scientists performing good science to win the day. And we are starting to see more and more movies like that. I'm hopeful this is some of the start of a renewed interest in science, technology, and space.

Yeah... Moon is a cool movie, kind of mind-bending.

Saw The Martian, awesome movie... and to your highlighted... this is why we will never send poets ( regardless of what Ellie Arroway in Contact thinks ) into space. Anyone other than a top-flight scientist would be dead withing an hour of having the kinds of problems as shown in this movie.

I like these movies because I try to guess what the person will do to get out of the mess they are in. Even get it right sometimes.

so who else made a stupid crazy dinner last night (or tonight) for Thanksgiving?

Yea we did it Sunday this year and that really helped (usually its Monday). My wife and I split the duties 50-50 and we get going at 9:30am, serve dinner at 5:00pm, and don't really finish clean up until 8:30. All for about 15 minutes at the dinner table.

I saw Interstellar for the first time on the plane ride to and from Calgary last week and thought it was a solid effort. Although it was really long I felt the use of time was not gratuitous and it felt like it was constructed well and made sense.

Be happy. All of our family is out of province, so we have dinner for three. Lots of prep time, short eating time but we get none of that family interaction. Sure do miss it.

Almost none of my family lives in Manitoba, and the wife is on vacation with a friend in LA, so I ate chips for dinner and played video games for Thanksgiving.

Felt bad later and made myself a sandwich.
