You mean the Oilers payed Dave Semenko and Marty McSorely for their hockey skills, they had no positive effect otherwise?

No they probably had some reason for it. Doesn't have to be a good reason. Research with several decades of games as sample size into questions like this has shown no support at all for pretty much anything attributed to the positive effect of enforcers. Which is a big reason why they are almost completely gone from the game. You weren't less likely to get cheap shots against with an enforcer on the team, there's no real support for an effect from fighting, there's no support for an intangible effect on the team because they feel more comfortable.

I'm sure they were liked, and made people feel like someone had them their back. There just was no follow up effect from that.

This is all widely available research, but you're free to ignore it if you want.
