Hey guys, honest question.

A lot of you have made it obvious that you think it is unfair Matthews gets talked about a lot by the Toronto media and not Laine.

Yet in this thread there are a lot of you clearing disapproving of the media hounding Laine.

What is the compromise here or is it just *****ing to *****?

Before you call me a troll, check out my comments in the Leafs GDT. I have been defending Laine from my fellow fans for the last few weeks.

It isn't just Matthews. A couple of days ago the TSN/NHL front page had at least 7 stories on the Leafs. That's a whole year's worth for most of the other Canadian teams. There were more links/headlines than that. Some were linked twice but there might have been an 8th story in there somewhere.

We also usually dislike the media hyped rivalry between Laine and Matthews. It seems like some kind of insecurity of TML fans that they have to continually try to prove that Matthews is better. Hey, you finished last and got 1st pick. Good for you. Your pick is SUPPOSED to be the best one. Most of us would have picked Matthews too, if we'd won the 1st pick. As it turns out he is not clearly better. It is a very close thing. Good for both teams. 5 years from now we can have an intelligent discussion of who turned out better but even then it won't matter. Each team got a very good player to accelerate the build/rebuild.

It would be nice to be able to enjoy the success of another Canadian team. SOME Toronto fans make that just about impossible.

That said I hope we get a good game tonight. I wish we were in better shape but we will do the best we can with our AHL defense.

Make sure to bring a hat, you know just in case..

I'd die laughing seeing just one hat flying out on the ice xD

You just gave me a great image, thanks. It wafts slowly down from way in the upper reaches and lands just about at centre ice.

There would be more than 1 though. I'm sure there will be a few Jets fans there.

Since you can look up the numbers yourself, tell you in a non-stats way? Watch some of Little's games from the latter half of 2013-14 and the first half of 2014-15.

Little has never really been a legit Selke candidate, but he was damn close to it during that stretch. Would make one or two pass breakups per game, almost never cleanly lost a board battle, and just gravitated to loose pucks like Bergeron.

Hard to say what happened after that. He's still a beast, but he's never looked as good as he did in that stretch. Injuries sure haven't helped.

As a fun aside: Neither have great defensive XPMs right now.

Top 5 defensive impact: Koivu, Ward (? :|), Bergeron, Komarov, Honqvist
(Highest Jet: Lowry at 58th)

I think Koivu, Bergeron, and Komarov would be my Selke ballots right now.

In case anyone is curious:

Top 5 for offensive impact: Crosby, Malkin, Pacioretty, Eberle, Tarasenko
(Highest Jet: Wheeler at 6th)

Top 5 combined impact: Malkin, Thornton, Wheeler, Hornqvist
(Next highest Jet: Perreault at 41st)

Top 5 defensive d-man impact: Hjalmarsson, Tanev, Klefbom, Braun, Vlasic
(Highest Jet: Trouba at 14th)

Top 5 offensive d-man impact: Byfuglien, Karlsson, McDonagh, Hedman, Krug
(Next highest Jet: Trouba at 11th)

Top 5 combined impact: McDonagh, Byfuglien, Karlsson, Hedman, Trouba
(Next highest Jet is way the FFF down with Postma)

Note1: Not impact is not a rate (per minute) but overall.
Note2: XPM does not account for boxscore stats like scoring.

I was at the ACC for the game when Scheif scored his first NHL goal (we ended up losing). A rather rousing "Go Jets Go" started from the upper deck - it got drowned out, but the back and forth was pretty fun. :D

Are Wheeler and Buff really that good?! (and yes I realise this doesn't factor in everything)
Is Burns not even top 5?

Eh? I didn't realize that. I know he was waived at the beginning of the season.

I didn't think it was the beginning of the season. Too lazy to look it up right now. The thing is that he was waived twice. The first time it was already clearly a good thing for Chevy to jump on.

Why bother?

EV save% (2016/17):

Halak 0.904
Hellebuyck 0.918

I want Hellebuyck to play as much as possible down the stretch, and then the Jets can try to figure out what to do about a second goalie in the off-season. There might be better options available than Halak, all things considered.

Helle .911
Halak .904
Pavalec .888

That's why. All situations that is. Also for next year, 1A/1B.

Yes there might be better options in the off-season - or not. But you are right. The time to do that was before Halak was waived which, IIRC was before Pav was recalled.

Burns is an elite BPM player, the boxscore stat sister to XPM. BPM is almost equally important as XPM to a player's overall offensive WAR rating.

Put it this way, Burn's ES scoring per min, which is the largest variable in BPM, is 2x the average for a first pair defender... lol

What this means statistically:
Burns helps his team offensively not by promoting the team to generate more shots and improving shot quality, but by him actually scoring the points himself.
XPM looks at the former. BPM looks exclusively at the latter.

It's been nice having the jets play the sense and leafs the past couple of games. TSN puts in effort on pre game shows for those markets. We get stuck with beyak and jet fuel. They get bob Mackenzie.
