Jets being good should be more surprising

I think the Jets being so good last few years is a surprise. I mean we have prospects and players force their way out. We have no top 10 nhl players. We often have to pay more to retain or keep anyone around.
No number 1 picks on roster.

hellebuyck is a top 1 nhl goaltender
morrissey is ~top-5-10 NHL Dmen
connor is a top 10 producer on offense at LW, probably Wing overall.

some of the more popular stats-based projection analysts (ie: Jfresh) had the Jets as a v good team in 23-24 (bu bu but analytics are garbage!! :sarcasm:). and the Jets returned ~95% of the players from 23-24 so there was a high chance they'd be good again. however this good, i think is a bit surprising, but they were not going to just stink.

After 110 points last season the losses were not significant. Fans got what they wanted, internal promotion for young players, except I think our fanbase wanted more young players.

The one thing that stood out last year is special teams were not good. The room for improvement there, with a continuation or improvement in 5 on 5 play is the basis for the surprise.

Who did we pay more for? You said often so I'll expect plenty of examples.

Many teams have players that force their way out. I'd say the Jets are actually pretty good at retaining players.

The reason we are so good is we have one of the best GMs in the league. He doesn't make hasty decisions, he doesn't bow to pressure, he doesn't do shit just to do shit, and he wins pretty much every trade he makes.

Both JoMo and Helle are top 5 at their position
Would mo be recognized across league as top 5. Top 3,makar, fox, Hughes being easy. Don’t know if mo gets one of last 2 spots.

Who do we often pay more?

I'll wait for the examples.

I guess I just don’t hear about as many players forcing their way out. We have often overpaid guys like Kulikov more.

finished 7th and 5th in Norris voting last 2 years. i don't think he's been as good this year to start as those two, but he's within the top-10 id say comfortably.

He has a 5th and 7th Norris place finish the last two years so it seems he is definitely recognized near the top of his position.

He's well on his way to another high Norris finish.

The one area I think Chevy has really done well is build up our lineup depth to the point of being a team that can run 4 effective lines. We may be short on superstars other than Helly but we have a deep middle class of players.

He won some, he lost some. A stats person would NEVER cherry pick a result to confirm their bias, would they?:sarcasm:

If KC keeps his play up, maybe we have another player that forces their way into the elite of his position.

You'd then have a top 3 goalie, top 5 to 10 LW and top 5 to 10 number 1 dmen.

We are missing that star C but as you said we have a very good amount of depth.

Chevy has a knack of selling at the right time. Thought laine would be better same with many other stars who left.

Who else? One player is not often.

We've gotten many players in value contracts as well

Lol that's one ufa contract. Maybe you can include Mason too. But really the Jets aren't huge players in UFA which avoids them from getting bad long term contracts. Players like Ladd declined the Jets in 2016 or Frolik previously, and supposedly Alzner.

This is where "Winnipeg" may be an indirect advantage of avoid signing bad UFA deals. I've seen many posts of Winnipeg not being a UFA destination, and at the same time, shit on the UFA market or July 1 contracts signed. So if most of the long term UFA deal suck and Winnipeg isn't on the short list of attractive teams, think more should be fine with that and can be argued more advantageous.

Where Winnipeg does well is when they trade for a player and they extend here later (ie nino, demelo, vlad, stastny for example). I think Winnipeg does adequately in the mid level player market.

You are right, there aren’t many. I might include Schmidt in the same vein. He wasn’t a UFA but his acquisition, with his contract was a result of not being able to get a NHL UFA defender. He was overpaid and it still cost a 3rd.

I think Chevy does a good job not losing his damn mind on UFAs as well. We always hear how the Jets were in on players but wouldn’t offer enough. Once in a rare while we get to hear an example like Monahan last year or Ladd waaay back when, ok so there might only be two examples. Monahan will probably be good for a year or two but he has quite the injury history that doesn’t make me confident he will be worth. $5.5m X 5. Once you sign that contract it becomes an anchor on all other options that may come at 2C.

No one is surprised the Jets are this good right now, yet how many were here pissing and moaning the Chevy didn't do enough over the summer and needed to promote Lambert and/or Chibrikov. Just wait until they lose 2 or 3 games in a row...

Not true. The only overpay was Kulikov and I don't think he needed an overpay to come here. Chevy simply outbid whoever else was after him and it turned out to be high.

He overpaid Pionk based on a career year and he acquired Schmidt in the middle of an existing contract. Every team has a few of those.

All of the other players who have extended here long term have been for market value, or even less.

Huh?

Who have we overpaid to come here or stay here? If anything, a bunch of our core players have taken team friendly contracts over the years, not get overpaid.

And it's when guys leave here that they often get overpaid. Copp, Myers, LB...even Poolman...no way the Jets would match any of those contracts.

Chevy very rarely overpays himself. The bad contracts are often acquired through trade to fill spots like Schmidt.

Other than Kulikov as a UFA and Schmidt in trade I can't think of any others.

Schmidt is the closest we have come to a crippling contract. And at <6 mil it was hardly crippling. Wheeler's turned out to be too long but that is always the risk when signing players to their last contracts.

I think this should be made up into a needle-point sampler (Google it) and posted on HF walls all over the city for when the fans turn on Chevy again.

It's not like Ladd lit up the league after he left the Jets.
