GDT: Jets @ Avs | 7:30 pm MT | Hellebuyck Emergency

I get it because the injuries have been bad this year but in this last stretch Nuke is really the only impact player missing. We still have Makar, Mack, Rantanen, Lehkonen, Drouin, Toews. No way this team should be this bad.
They really are. They are not a good team. Even if they were healthy they'd have lots of holes.

This notion that we are actually good is a myth. We have 2 elite players, one guy that pretends to be elite, a decent goalie, and a bunch of so so guys that don't do much.

This team is not a playoff team. They are simply not good.

Avs played well, just got undone by lucky bounces that went the Jets' way.

Nevertheless, the powerplay needs an injection of meth at this point. It's seriously making the Avs lose games BIG TIME.
I do not believe this at all. They didn't suck, but they did not play well. They did not play "their" game. They played a lot on the perimeter and overpassed a ton. If that is playing well, than sure...

You forget maybe the most pivotal lynchpin of the team.

Poolman.

To be honest while the Avs didn't dominate, against any other goalie not named Hellebuyck they probably win this game in regulation. He just has the Avs' number in regular season play.

I'm not ready to call for CMac's head. He's made moves in the last 2 years to try to make the team competitive but the coaching staff isn't growing with the team.
He's shuffling deck chairs... admirably? But what is he doing to actually improve the team. There is one big thing sitting square in his face. One thing that interacts with the players daily. Whose responsibility it is to get the players ready to play and to play to their upmost potential. Do you really continue to waste every freaking assett in the organization or maybe try and see if another coach can do better?

People need to remember that this team's front office epitomizes the "old boys club" mentality of this league. CMac is Sakic's boy. Bednar is Cmac's boy. Bennett and Pratt are Bednar's boys. They won a Cup together. We'll sooner see a Cale trade than we will a major coaching change. And the season hasn't been such an abject disaster that there's enough fire from fans and the media to push anything in that direction. This is what we're stuck with.

We just have to hope that the players can fix the PP on their own somehow, that guys get healthy and then trust in CMac make some shrewd moves to make this team deep enough for a legitimate run. But as of right now, this ain't it. Not even close.

What it needs is Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar to start ripping one timers at will.

They are trying so hard to make the wide-open play, they forget the two most dangerous plays are those.

I do not recall the last time MacKinnon scored a one timer goal on the PP. He not only refuses to shoot, he puts himself at a horrible angle where he can only be a passer.
I would add Mittelstadt to this. He feasts on the PP and I don't think he's even on the first unit right? Drouin took his spot IIRC. I would like to see them switched, CM is one of the best pure passes on the team and should do wonders with the extra ice, but Bednar has demoted him big time. Some of that is warranted, but he was demoted when the team got uber-healthy for like two games and he didn't necessarily play badly at that point in time.

I should say that I only caught the second half of the game, I came in late from work. Nonetheless, you're playing a damn good team, Jets are well structured and have a lot of the strengths that give Avs a ton of problems. Normally we lose this game like 4-2, but Avs battled from some absolute stinkers the last two weeks and it is a good step in the right direction.

When Wood comes back, and assuming we don't have another death, I want to see the Wood - Colton - LoC roaring 20's line resurrected. Who plays on the second line you ask. I don't f***ing know, I just can't stand that Kelly and Kivi 3rd line anymore. Put Ivan there. He was doing better in the top 6 anyway.

It’s taken 50 games, but I’m starting to lose interest in this team or inspiration to watch us “play 60 minutes.”

It's not even on the table this year.

They're not gonna miss the playoffs which is the only scenario where his job would be at risk(And he'd probably lose it).

Quite frankly when you look at the injuries we've had all year as well... His job isn't even remotely at risk.
Agree, not remotely. But wish he would feel more heat anyway. As several echo here oft... his stubbornness, unable or unwillingness to shift strategies, sumpin'... grates.

How is this a coaching issue? They’re not getting 2nd line production. If we had Val it would help but Bednar is doing everything he can to get Mitts going, but it’s not working.

Lehky is a very good player but he’s not a play driver, neither is Colton. They were on the 2nd line and Mitts supposed to be the play driver but he’s a complete ghost right now other than a game here and there where he produces.

If we gonna ignore that lack of 2nd line production isn’t an issue and rely on Nate and his line to win us every game, why even have 2nd line and pay players a lot of money? We can just pay Nate and Mikko and whoever is on the other wing all the money, then get league minimum players for the other 3 lines.

We’re keep losing this close games because we need a 2nd line to help and keep momentum going after the 1st line does their job, but I didn’t see Mitts doing anything at all, never mind scoring, just do something dangerous, create a chance or something, but he was a ghost yet again.

2nd line isnt out there to just check and play defense, it needs to provide offense. Just look back how much we struggled years ago when we didn’t have a 2C before getting Kadri, and how much we struggled after Kadri left. Same thing is happening right now

"I like our plan of attack. If you think you have a better option, you make some changes. We are using all the guys we've used before." -Bednar

Like hell the team tried. They tried the same shit they've been doing for 9 years. Everyone knows it. Adding a double drop back pass is not going to get entry into the zone any better. Bednar and his team have absolutely no excuses for the pathetic nature of our special teams. If our GM had balls and belief in himself he's already wipe the board and bring in a new voice.

I have to wonder at some point if a GM holding on to a coach past their expiration isn't more about trying to buy time for the GM than the HC.

On that note, I've spoken my mind quite a bit tonight, and whenever I do that my reputation tends to take a hit around here because I'm not the smartest. So I'm gonna sign off for the night and wish y'all the best.

Casey Mittelstadt tonight per NST:

0 shots
2 hits
0 rush chances
0 rebounds created
0 shots blocked
0 hits taken

Hes not good enough. Simple as that. I know people like to bring up Kadri and his struggles when he first joined the Avs but Kadri also did other things to help the team. He could shut down the other teams best forward, he hit, he scrapped, he drew penalties like crazy. Nobody talks about this. Mittelstadt doesnt do anything if hes not scoring or creating chances and he rarely does the latter two things. Mitteljost is no longer a funny nickname its a reality.

Disaster trade. Blew our load on a question mark that's turning out to be no better than Alex Newhook or Ryan f***ing Johansen as a 2C solution. And now the assets are so thin that it'll be virtually impossible to make a deal to try yet another guy that's worth a damn.

Was that the same excuse we had against Montreal, Chicago, Winny on the 11th, Oilers, Wild (again on the 20th). This team was winning one and losing one until tonight. Now they've lost two in a row.

Anyone looking to excuse this is not actually interested in winning a championship.

I actually think Mittelstadt throughout his career has been a horrible PP player, both Buffalo and here.

I think I like the matchup still if we end up against winnipeg in the playoffs again.

Obviously, they are able to lock us up in the reg season when they don't have to face us more than a game at a time. I also see stretches where we breach that and dominate them similar to that series.

At this point, I think you need to move off of Mitts. I wouldn’t be surprised if he suddenly started producing again once he gets traded, but he just doesn’t fit this team. It really sucks since he started off the season looking like he was ready for that next step, and completely fell off

Good analysis from John Mitchell and the Altitude crew as it pertains to the power play. The book is out on what made their PP so successful early on and the scouts are just too good to not change and adjust. Pretty much exactly what we've been saying for weeks now. Let's see if the coaching staff can take a hint for once.

I agree, I thought they were better than some of their lifeless performances as of late, but they didn't play well. Still lots to be desired. Lot of hope plays, lot of passengers, lot of bad passes, lots of lost puck battles. Overall not awful, but not great either.
