Late to the dance on commenting on the game.


Obviously thrilled with the result. I have to admit I was surprised when I pulled up the score. I watched the PVR before my guests arrived. Nice to get off the schneid vs the Leafs, they have owned us lately.

First line was spectacular which was great to see. Keep playing on the right side of the puck and good things will happen because you won’t have to defend as much.

Thought Pionk had one of the best games I have seen him play in a while.

Morrissey is always fun to watch

Heinola has a long way to go still but that was a decent game so he is at least directionally correct for now.

Third line works their ass off, seemed to be going to that set play where Appleton would pull up with the puck and time his shot/pass at the net as either Lowry or Nino were crashing the door step. Dangerous plays even though they didn’t cash in directly on them they drew a penalty.

Too bad about Fleury, he is finally getting a good stretch of games in and an injury takes him out.

Helle is butter. Really solid game again.

Really nice way to go to the Christmas break.

And most of it is paid in signing bonuses, so it is almost pointless to ever buy it out. And full NMC.

I don't doubt it. There's not much competition.
He's got a million dollars base salary all the rest is signing bonuses for the next 6 years. Would you like a player like that on the Winnipeg Jets?

I think he's effective for at least 4 more years.

Reminds me of Blake Wheeler's self-assessment after he signed his big contract at age 33, following his most productive NHL season. He said he had always been a late-bloomer and saw many good seasons ahead. Reality: his contract was bought out at 36 and by age 37 his play had fallen off a cliff.
It's natural for players to overestimate their longevity, but with only a handful of D even playing in the NHL past the age of 37, it's pretty clear the the Leafs management's time horizon is very, very short.

That is a big part of getting players to buy in through their primes, knowing the organization will treat them well as their careers come to a close. Just wait a few years when the organization rewards Morrissey for playing for $6.25 M as a top 10 NHL defensemen through his prime.

Helly and Shief got their paydays and so will JoMo. Connor will likely gets the biggest payday come July 1 or shortly after.

I wonder if the org doesn't mind paying them a little more than they're worth at the end of their careers since they earned less than they could have at the start

Thr timing of all those early deals was amazing. They all signed that had huge breakouts shortly after. I'm hoping for something similar with Damberg and Perfetti

Overall Chevy has done a great job of balancing contracts. Coming up Vilardi’s will be important as well.
