Part 1 (yes overcaffeinated chatty Cathy posts incoming)
So I was at game one of the playoffs last year and this year. Last year as I was walking with my kids and their mom to the vehicle I jokingly said “if we keep playing them like that we are going to lose in 5 games” I was joking but it capture how I felt by the absolute mess of a game we had that night saved by their sieve of a goalie.
Some of these points have been touched on but here goes. Yes the team seemed to have allot of nerves early in the game which I haven’t seen this season. Game 83 is different and they have allot of demons to exercise. The white out might be a bit intimidating for the home team too. Blues had a game plan formula and executed it quite well in the first period. Stretch pass, tip, hard physical forecheck and physically knock our team to hell. Reminds me so much of when the Ducks tried to do this to the Hawks in the semi final on the way to the Hawks last cup win. Schenn led the Blues with 9 hits (nuts), Neighbours, Walker, and Toropchenko all around 7 hits each. For the most part I thought our team handled that physical style ok. We didn’t get run out of the building and nor do I believe it was a major cause for the blues success. Good old “the playoff have clearly started” hockey though.
I never complain about the refs as far as them singling the Jets out. Refs make mistakes and some nights it’s worse on us and some nights it’s worse on the other team. It all evens out so I don’t waist much time on it. That being said I didn’t like how involved the officials were in the first period and I didn’t like any of the calls on either team based on the tone of the game. I thought they settled down a bit as the game went on.
We lost the special teams battle 1-2 and have to clean up or PK.
To Helle I think it was a mixed bag. The 3rd goal he was screened and it was a perfectly placed shot in the top corner. The first two I didn’t hate since they were once again good shots but I am open to the argument he was a bit deep in the net and that might have cost him. He seemed to lack his normal swagger early. I think him stopping the break away late in the second period was one of the turning points in the game. Connor needs to elevate as this series goes on. He will need to be our best player and next game is a good time to start.
I thought at 5 on 5 we were pretty good most of the night and really took over as the second period wore on and that carried into the 3rd where we were dominant. Did the Blues run out of gas because they were running around hitting too much, did they get tight because they were sitting on a lead in the 3rd vs the top team in the league on the road, or did Winnipeg just pick it up and get to their dominant style. Who knows for sure maybe a combination of all three but we were playing vintage Presidents Trophy Jets hockey.
I was inordinately excited when Connor scored with under 2 minutes left. The place went crazy and my somewhat puzzling stoic evening was disrupted. That carried into the Apples bank pass to Lowry for the 5th.
Last night as we left Canada Life Centre I had a completely different feeling as I walked to the vehicle with my son. We got to our game and we choked out the Blues in the 3rd. Much different start to the 2025 playoffs.
