Post-Game Talk: Jets 4 - Coilers 3

Perfetti has been hot lately, but, for who? Schief, Ehlers, Connor? Villardi is the only physical player on our pp who is willing to screen the goalie. I wouldn't want Perfetti taking the abuse.
Vilardi's been pretty underwhelming lately. And I'd like to remind you that Perfetti checked two guys into the boards Byfuglien style the other night...

Really, though, Perfetti is often in tight around the net...he knows where to go, can handle the physical stuff a lot better than a year ago. I think if I was going to make a change, it would be Perfetti for Vilardi.

After reading through the PGT, I think a few people need to take on a home reno project over the next 4 weeks to focus on. Hockey will likely be pretty unsatisfying for you as Arniel navigates his 1st place team into the playoff dock. He can't push too hard yet and he will likely need to find a few extra games for Helly to rest. I expect a similar type 10 game record to their current 6-3-1 over the last 11 games, which will be in the ballpark of what the Stars and Avs do. Teams in the West are pretty locked into their playoff positions so rest and good health are the biggest priorities.

2015-present77-63.550 (4th)58-45.563 (4th)19-18.514

*The NHL records page for OT uses Win% but it's kind of deceptive, because Atlanta only played a few seasons before ties were eliminated (beginning with the introduction of the shootout in 2005-06). So older franchises have records like the Rangers: 271-248-322...271 wins out of 841 OT games played = a win percentage of .322. Suck it, Rags!

But the Thrashers didn't have a bad OT record, surprisingly. If you divide those ties into shootout 50-50 coin flips, they have been maybe 111-101 = .524. Anyway, I'm not doing that for the entire NHL OT records list.

Obviously, fewer games go to shootouts now. In the four seasons from 2011-2014 the Jets played in 40 shootouts (with a 20-19 record), and in the 9 seasons since 3v3 was introduced, they've played just 37 (19-18).

Damn dude! Thank you for this. Super comprehensive.

That is pretty impressive. We are one of the best!

Perfetti’s rounding into form has been such an awesome thing

Some of our (younger core) players taking the next step might secretly be the biggest difference maker this year vs last come post season

Happy he wasn’t traded. I think he’s got a few more gears to give yet this season.

I was looking and Vilardi is more heavily dependent on the pp for points then the other top 6 players. He has over 40% of his production on the pp whereas the others are mostly in the low 30 percentages. So the pp going ice cold has probably hurt him the most.
lmao at the hypocrisy and double-standards coming from you.

Some people really need to stop with the Twitter shit, I get it some think they have something to say but when your eyes see what you want them to see but you're dead wrong you look like a fool
Twitter, now X, has been a particularly bad cesspool since it got rebranded to a single letter and some of the rules were changed

Blue sky, while small, much more refreshing generally speaking. Similar to twitter of old circa 2010

Yup, Florida, Dallas and other teams fans are saying the same thing. It's the calm before the storm and most teams guaranteed their spots are playing uneven hockey as they have nothing to play for.

The 3rd line's been bad since Lowry returned from injury.

yeah i have not been impressed with the 3rd line essentially the last few months (maybe since the clock hit 2025?).

i had concerns of the middle-6 group prior to the TDL, luckily Perfetti has picked up the pace though. the team can probably get by if 1/2 of the middle-6 lines are clicking though and the Ehlers line has been doing that as of late.

agreed. i think the players may be just kind of over the regular season. I am too tbh. they're in 1st w/ v little chance of being surpassed. however in saying that, the coaches are playing players - Morrissey in particular - like they're fighting for a PO spot. this is where i think the Jets can adopt some NBA load management at this point of the year but that doesn't seem to be popular in the NHL.

Jets magic number is 9 now. Any combo of Jets wins or Stars regulation losses that total 9 clinches 1st for the Jets.
I agree if the Jets can win 3 of 4 on this home stand they basically have clinched 1st and then they can rest some players down the stretch or at least cut their minutes.
Does this mean 1st in the Central or the Western Conference?

It's gonna be a problem if the Jets think they can lean on that 3rd line in the playoffs and they haven't sorted it out.

Agree on all of your points.
PP is off. Vilardi not up to early season form. Scheifele getting too cute with passes which have been intercepted a lot recently.
I just checked goalie stats and Hellebuyck ar 76.1%, Comrie at 23.9%. Not as skewed as I thought but Hellebuyck not as sharp so a more even distribution to season's end sounds good.
Coglan looked pretty good in his limited time, IMO but Heinola and he seem to be "forgotten".
I think that Appleton is "off" (from injury?) and that is throwing off whole line. The team as ample replacements but will coach make a move?
thanks for bringing up the % of gp for helle.
although more rest may be more beneficial, it seems like he's going to play ~3/4s of the games regardless of where the Jets are in the standings. last year they were a 110 pt team and he hit 73% of gp (60/82).

true. ultimately depends on the top-line though... if scheifele is closer to even or under, then the middle-6 will have to pick up the pace which hasn't been the case the last 2 PO-years. if the top-line is playing like they did ~Nov through ~Feb, then there is less of an onus.

The great equalizer is injuries, the healthiest and most desperate teams in the West are playing the best right now. Colorado is on another level, and I am sure that is motivating the Jets enough to win #1 in the West. .500 hockey probably gets you there, that's enough to keep the Stars at a pace where they would need 22/23 of 28 available points.

I think there's enough left in the tank. Clearly the leaders understand the situation. They may not be pushing their hardest, but they are doing enough to ensure they don't lose. Including last night, with the save the mattered most. And Scheifele on the back check.

This homestand is important though because the Jets haven't won this year in L.A., Vegas, Utah or Dallas. Which doesn't mean they can't but the earlier they can get to the safe haven of #1 seed, the earlier they can rest up, which is probably Scotty's message.

What you have to worry about is those teams that are playing playoff hockey now, amped up energy, coming into town when the team in the safe spot is starting to play safe, and then has to amp up that energy again. The teams with nothing to lose can also play like they have nothing to lose by going out and playing hard.

Hope you are right.

At the beginning, half way thru and now this team will be judged by what it's going to do in the playoffs. Top line needs to take charge, 2nd line needs to continue do what they have been doing in the last while. The key is the 3rd line and if they can chip in enough. Bonus is the 4th line that quite frankly out plays the 3rd atm.

I was thinking Vilardi but only for a game, max 2 just to see if that gets it going. Perfetti is stronger this season than last in my opinion.

It's good at least that Arniel knows he can flip the switch on 4th line wingers with 3rd line wingers and produce a change in tempo. Maybe generate goals. But it doesn't change the overall scenario if the demoted wingers can't have an impact, maybe marginally it does if you cut their ice time.

I think there's still some questions about defense too. It's unfortunate the Jets only got 1 game with Fleury and Schenn together, and maybe they try to get some more down the stretch to build some chemistry, because the Jets can't have a 3rd pairing collapse like they did last year. And they will need a strong playoff from Pionk when he gets back into the lineup.

I would really like Tanev to move up with the Lowry line and Appleton down.
