Player Discussion: Jet Greaves

That's how I see it. Jet always seems to track it and stay square even when it's a mess in front of him.
Some Montreal fans compared him to Price in terms of his calmness. Hes not Carey Price but there can straight up chaos all around him and he looks like he's at a leisurely practice.

His tracking and glove hand are also phenomenal. Think he's baited a few guys to go high glove so far

Tarasov is out for sure next year and Greaves will be one of the two. I think it’s higher than 50% chance they run with Elvis and Jet next year and sign a veteran for Cleveland who can spot up here when needed. Have Elvis and Jet compete for the #1 spot, something Elvis didn’t really have to worry about this year.

I don’t disagree that a fresh start wouldn’t be bad for everyone, but I doubt there are takers on Elvis and I could see management wanting to hold off on buying him out this year.

Yeah, it’s similar to what I said a few days ago. The more I think about it, if we were in NHL GM mode, it’d make more sense to NOT buy him out. You’re likely not going to be able to find a better goalie than Elvis in FA unless you’re willing to pay for one of the (few…) UFA guys who (when combined with Elvis’s buyout) would eat up about the same amount of money as just keeping Elvis would. And doing that would just extend his cap hit two more years.

But it’s not NHL GM mode. It’s real life with human beings, not robots. That applies on both Elvis’s end (how he feels if that’s what presented to him) and others in the organization (how they feel about keeping him around).

$6.5 million split between a Jet/Elvis tandem doesn’t seem too bad, as long as everyone can play nice in the sandbox. But maybe that’s not realistic.

I wrote this long response to you and then deleted it. Gonna be short and concise. I think Elvis would benefit from a change of scenery and the CBJ would benefit from a new tandem in the Columbus net. Running it back with Elvis seems like a bad idea to me.

It's not realistic, yes.

Elvis was the one guy that I insisted Waddell move on from last summer that he didn't (he did great with Roslovic and Laine). And I didn't insist on that because Elvis wasn't talented or wasn't capable of putting up a solid save percentage. It's the drama. It's all the noise in his head that creeps into the rest of the team. We're too young and emotionally volatile. You don't move on from that by making him a tandem goalie or a backup, you have to move on completely.

It’s possible both those things you say are benefits are true. It’s also possible one is or neither are.

CBJ might do their own internal salary cap analysis and projections, and when combined with that knowledge, along with knowledge of the locker room and available options, think keeping Elvis is best. Keeping him is risky. But it might be less risky than rolling with a tandem consisting of a guy who’s played 21 career games and never played a full season in the NHL alongside a journeyman backup. Sometimes the devil you know (Elvis has at least been a full-timer starter in this org) is better than the one you don’t (especially when factoring in a buyout). Or on the flip side, maybe there’s irreparable damage in the locker room and/or the scouts are adamant whomever they bring in is better than Elvis.

If they decide they want to keep him, my guess is it’ll be presented to him that it’ll be a tandem. Or maybe even he’ll start the year as the backup. Maybe Elvis would still prefer that in a city he likes with a young family, rather than have to move somewhere else in an unfamiliar city/org where he’d likely be the backup at best. Or, maybe he’d be offended by the request and/or think he can still be a quality starter somewhere else, and request a trade/buyout.

Anyway, this is probably more for the Elvis thread or roster thread, not the Jet thread. Jet will be in Columbus next year haha.

ChatGPT hilarity. Jet Greaves ready for takeoff runway 614.

Hopefully Don has enough data points on goaltending? Kid just seems humble and hungry to play.

For your reading enjoyment today...and BTW, I looked up the 2019 NHL Central Scouting NA Goalie Rankings. Jet was #28. The only NA guys I recognize are Spencer Knight (#1), Mads Sogaard (#2), and Dustin Wolf (#12). On the Euro side, the guy we watched last night Kochetkov (#1).
