Player Discussion JESPERI KOTKANIEMI

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

Yeah he's a good long term 3C on a solid contract that will only get better as the cap rises, but Staal is blocking him/we still have a 2C hole. I'd be ok moving him in the right deal (he and his contract are an asset for us or almost any team), but I'm also cool with just waiting it out until Staal is gone (or old enough to demote to 4C) and he can just be settled into 3C indefinitely from there.

Obviously not worth 3rd overall pick, but fortunately for us we didn't draft him there. I think he's worth about what we gave up with the offer sheet, maybe a bit less but overall I have no issues with the move. And he is still young enough to have potential to improve, I'm just not holding my breath anymore.

A horrendous 2nd PP unit is skewing his statline. 2 years ago, his production was satisfactory; not ideal for a 2C, but okay. He’s just 1 point from that full season EV total with a dozen games left to play.

His PP production is way down. 11 points that season. 1 point this season.
True but to also be objective Koko really offers absolutely nothing on the PP himself so it's not purely the rest of the unit also sucking.

I didn't mean to absolve him from blame. If you were to rank him against other centers around the league, it's not a compelling argument. He hasn't been good as arguably the #2 threat on a PP unit.

From a Carolina team needs perspective, however, I don't know that the 2C needs to be a driver with the man advantage. In the coming years, the quality on the wings should improve and those players can fill the primary movement roles, letting Kotkaniemi pickup a few more points by just winning faceoffs and shoveling in garbage.

Yeah that's fair, I'm not one to expect a team to have 9-10 incredible powerplay players so of course having an inconsequential player like Koko on the 2nd unit is fine.

100%. I figured Kotkankemi must have awful Pp production because his 5v5 points are really wide solid this year. Holy butts 1 PP point all year is unfathomable. We have to find someone else for the second unit. Maybe even try Jankowski or Roslovic as center.

If he can be more of a clever setup man perhaps he could prove his powerplay usefulness, but I'll believe it when I see it.

I still have a little flame of hope because there are a number of NHLers who don't really break out until their late 20s and it's possible Kotkankemi will keep developing. He's easily a more complete player than when we first got him, and I felt we needed to shelter him all game.

Kotkaniemi, at the very least, looks like a future elite 3C and the long-term successor to Staal. I don't think it's a coincidence that he is constantly a net-positive player, especially at even-strength, even if it doesn't show up on the score sheet sometimes.

I’m absolutely baffled as to why they haven’t tried to turn him into a Noesen like net front on the powerplay. Even on the 2nd unit. He does it at even strength plenty.
Probably because he's got the best shot on that unit (when he gets it off fast enough) and is the best passer (all be it inconsistently)
