Player Discussion Jeremy Swayman

I think, in recent years, we made the mistake of thinking our defense was better than it was, when really we were just being bailed out by spectacular goaltending.

The Bruins defense this year is actually a bit better in every measurable category, except goaltending.

Shots Allowed/60 (last year vs this year)
30.04 to 28.19

Scoring Chances Against/60
29.12 to 27.36

High Danger Chances Against/60
12.07 to 11.2

Expected Goals Against/60
3.03 to 2.95

Save Percent
91.18 to 89.04
I think the main reason shots allowed and scoring chances against are down this year is because the Bruins have been behind in most games, and there have been a lot of blowouts - in those types of games teams ahead lay back a bit and focus less on offense and more on defending - the eye test says our defense has been way worse than last year ... as has the goaltending.

Whatever happened to his burner account in here the SwayHeyKid?

Posted in here daily defending Swayman to the death and once he signed we haven’t heard a peep.
I forgot about that dude. He was intense.

As you say, if someone told me that was him, his agent, or his girlfriend I would buy that 100%.

Guy would eat Jeremy's shit and make the french mwah signal and say tres magnifique.

As you say, funny he's not around much these days.....?????????

Probably another poster who made a burner, or is going under a different name now. It was silly and maybe the whole thing was a bit.

How to know when this just isn't your year
-the goalie has a good game and you lose 2-1
-the offense shows up, the goalie is off and you lose 5-4

It's the curse of a close to competitive but not there team- you usually ( the occasional blow-out aside) keep it close but also find ways to lose ...consistently

Cam Ward revisited.
Goalies are a fickle group in general. Hot one year cold the next.
Would never sign a goalie to long term extension, because then your stuck with them.
4 years max deals for any goalie.
So he should be traded, before his NTC kicks in, I am all in, and have a sneaky suspicion, Neely, would be all in also,

Swayman will be in the same category as Toivonen, Auld, and Raycroft

Toivonen total career earnings --> Career Total: US $2,432,900 (In today's dollars: US $3,747,757 )
Auld's total career earnings --> Career Total: US $6,888,000 (In today's dollars: US $10,429,718 )
Raycroft's total career earnings --> Career Total: US $7,100,000 (In today's dollars: US $10,843,094 )

Swayman is signed for almost another 7.25 years...with almost $60,000,000 remaining. :shakehead:help:

My fingers are crossed that he can get back to where he was the last few seasons, but the evidence from this season is not making me feel very confident...

Swayman has played in 42 games this year and has had a sub .900 sv% in 21 of them. Half the games, sub .900.

That's uhh, that's kind of gross any way you shake it. He's allowed the most goals in the NHL, too.
So what's Goalie Bob doing to help him?

So what's Goalie Bob doing to help him?

Interesting question. Bob Essensa has been a fantastic coach for a long time. Every goalie he's worked with he's made better in some capacity. This year has clearly been a challenge though. Korpi has been ok but I'm not seeing any miracles there in terms of improving his performance. Tough ask though when he's had so few starts. Hard to build any rhythm or momentum.

With Sway it's hard to really get a gauge as to where he's at. Started the year behind the eight ball for obvious reasons beyond Bob's help or control, played catch up, then improved and was solid for a while before slipping into ordinariness again. Now though he's clearly as checked out as most of the rest, rightly or wrongly, rendering his current performance largely meaningless. Not much Bob can do at this point.

Like a lot of things with the Bruins now I think there's nothing for it with Sway but to wait for the summer and a fresh sheet of ice, and basically start over again. He and Bob can get to work leading into a proper preseason and we'll see what happens. While goalies are notoriously fickle I refuse to believe that the netminder who posted a .933 SV% through 12 playoff games less than 12 months ago has already completely forgotten his craft at age 26. The challenge isn't the raw ability, it's the increased workload and responsibility. His first crack at being "the guy" hasn't panned out. So be it. Next year is the one where we find out whether he's truly capable of being one of the elite no. 1s in the league or he isn't.

I still miss Tuuka, and we should have kept Ullmark. Oh well, it is what it is. I think next year will be more telling (props @Aussie Bruin ) but if Sweeney cannot manage to get a team that works well together and plays well in front of Swayman, it's going to be more of the same and it won't be all on Swayman.

I think Swayman still has value in the league if they're looking to make a big splash trade but I would be wary of it. Swayman has shown what he can do when he's on and I think it's smarter to hope he rebounds next year than trade him out and cross our fingers with a new goalie.

Swayman is a difference maker which is what makes this year so frustrating to watch from him. Poor angles, getting beat shortside high all year long, poor body language, pie in the sky post game interviews... just an ugly year all around that started off on the wrong foot because of his ego.
