Player Discussion Jeremy Swayman: A return to excellence?

The Bruins have had many issues this season leading to there mediocre play.

The Swayman contract saga being close to the top. IMO his public negations and selfish approach he has taken in negations' has had a very negative impact on the team.

Unfortunately the problems do not end there his play this season has not been near good enough. If you think you are a superstar play like one.
Why is a player negotiating a better deal for themselves "selfish"? It's absolutely laughable for a fan to even suggest this. It's a business. Teams operate under that premise all day long. Players are more than free to do the same. McAvoy certainly didn't leave a dime on the table. Nor did Pasta. But it's a problem when Swayman does what's best for himself? Hilarious.

We traded the prior years Vezina winner to promote him and agreed to not go to arbitration. He chose to use this as leverage.

Today was his first 'great' game of the season and were 45 games in he's hardly giving us prime Hasek goaltending.

Sway hadn't played particularly well, no question. Now with that being said, I've been critical of the defensive play in front of both goalies because it's been pretty lousy. I don't think any goalie would have much success playing behind a defense that lets the other team play in their end for prolonged periods of time and doesn't score any goals offensively. The roster is trash. But yes, sway can and has to be better. Today he was excellent. Literally why they won. With the stretch they have coming up against good teams, they need more of this.

I was at the game Saturday and he looked really sharp. Maybe he is on the upswing. The correlation of good goaltending to team success is not appreciated enough in my view. If he was playing up to his contract so far this season, there would be many more Ws on this team’s record. Here is where MoneyPuck has the goalies ranked by GSAE (the best indicator of goalie performance in my view:

Swayman: 65th
Korpisalo: 56th

Ullmark: 12th (why can’t we get guys like him?)

Absolutely bump time.

He was a monster last night. And has really found his game of late.

I thought last night was his best performance of the year. He was locked in and focused and has been trending in the right direction for a bit now. With the team missing their entire first pairing D, they need Swayman at the top of his game more than ever.

Swayman, like anyone is probably going to go in fits and spurts as he gets his game back. He struggled like hell for the first 30, but then he had a run there where he looked like he found his game, now he's off again, but hopefully he goes on another run and the next one is twice as long. 2 steps forward, 1 step back, until he's got it back for good.

Shame it had to be this way this season, but I'm still hopeful he's going to be nails for the next 7 years.

How long does he get to “get his game back”? We’re beyond the halfway point of the year.

I mentioned it in the GDT that I feel like the pre-scouting report on Swayman is short side high and shooters are beating him there a lot more this year than in prior seasons. When he's on, he looks like the Swayman of old but when he's not feeling it, he lets in pucks like an 80's goaltender.

Like Joe Thornton, sometimes you just need to get rid of a guy in order to blow it up and start fresh, even though you will never get comparable value in a trade.

It' negatious!

Look, I hammered him early in the year, and I still think he doesn't look good, BUT this team has a plethora of problems that having prime Dominik Hasek wouldn't solve.
You are, they need a team in front of the goaltender, but wait they gave all the money to the goaltender, you know the one, the goalie market setter. :sarcasm: :mad:

He hasn't been good. At all.

The defense is bad. True
Nobody is providing goal support. True

Swayman just hasn't been good. Not even average. Then factor in the contract, and his super casual demeanor at all times. It's a really bad situation. Sucks, cuz I was all in for signing this kid too. I've been bamboozled!

kid if you like, but I honestly think his contract hamstrung the team and has prevented them from making additional moves to improve the offense.
Swayman's less than stellar play isn't helping him reconcile the perception of him created by the negotiations.
Combine that with Sweeney going all in in 23 with nothing left to show for it (cup and players) and having to jettison many players he probably would have rather keep to be cap compliant ... we find ourselves where we are today - in the midst of another five year retool to get back to the finals.

I had hoped this last run was him finally getting it back, but obviously he stumbled again. I expect him to get it back for another good stretch, but there's no telling if he'll keep it through to the end of the season or falter again. My guess is that he won't really be back until next season.

Unfortunately, he gets as long as it takes, because it makes no sense to trade him out of spite for pennies on the dollar.

Yeah, I’m not suggesting we trade him.

I just think his level of play deserves criticism this year and, unfortunately, it’s magnified by the contract negotiation mess. He’s 100% in his right to get as much $ as he can, it’s a business…but on the flip side, great things are expected of him.

I don’t want to trade him because of his play. I’d be open to a discussion that he could be a valuable chip in a rebuild, although no one without brain damage would take on his contract now with how he’s played this season.

So, because you don’t want to take Pennie’s on the dollar, you gotta deal with it. I get it. But I’m going to call out his inconsistent play. God, he’s frustrating!

It was not really kidding, as much as I was being sarcastic. You probably don't know but back the contract talks were going on I was one that said, that he had not proven that he could handle the load and that was a legitimate concern, I also said and have repeated it many times that you need a balanced team, and that means spreading the cap around so to speak. You are correct to say that going all in 2023, has hurt this team somewhat, the problem is that not player that he picked up was resigned, or that he was able to resign. I stand by my comments, and this is coming from a David Krecji fan, he left the team, for a year, he should not have taken him back, Sweeney should have been looking for a replacement the year he was gone, and paying him a bonus the next year compounded the problem. They were looking for a wing when DeBrusk was here, now he is gone and not replaced, and still have not found the wing they needed before DeBrusk left. I could go on but you must be bored by now.
