Why in the world would we need to add to cernak to get petry ? Have you watched cernak play ? He is like 21 and already a top 4 defense in his rookie year. Cooper has no issues playing in the top 4 he actually looks better then Sergachev this season.

Taking on Petry's $5.5M cap hit for two more years makes no sense at all for us, no matter how good Petry is. Plus Cernak has become our 3rd or 4th best defenseman in less than a full season and as a rookie. No thanks.

If we don't bring back Stralman next year I'd do Palat for Petry at the draft. Petry slides into he top 4 and we don't see any drop off there and Palat adds a top 6 winger to Montreal. I can see Palat waiving to play in Montreal.

We aren’t paying more and frankly I wouldn’t even pay that. Petry is not the sort of defenseman we need and he loses some of his value considering we already have Hedman and Sergachev on our power play units.

He’s nowhere near as good defensively as (a healthy) Stralman which is what we need more, and he either wouldn’t get power play time or he’d cannibalize Sergachev’s. Actually what we need more than anything else is a veteran for our bottom pairing - Hedman-Serg and McDonagh-Cernak are a perfectly good top four.
