Jay Woodcroft

I think it's hard for a guy like him to get his flowers (thats if he deserves them) because he had a two headed monster in Edmonton that could win games on their own.

Knoblauch was able to win games in both the WCF and SCF so I think that hurts his case.

he might get one more chance at a head coaches position, but if that one fails, he will have to settle for assistant coach position if he wants to coach in the NHL

You either need a good looking coach to motivate the players like Rod or Kris or a hideous monstrosity like Maurice or DeBoer, the truth is painfully average coaches can't get it done.

The players need to fear the coach, either that he'll steal their wives/gfs if they don't perform or that he'll drink their blood. Average looking coaches produce feelings of indifference, impotence and incandescence.

Because he’s bad, and this is coming from someone that was against his firing at first

The teams play is night and day under KK

Woodcroft has no idea how to coach defence and his PK and particular stinks wherever he goes.

He got so badly out-coached by Bruce Cassidy in 2023 and made zero adjustments

He benefited from a new coach bump then a historical mvp season from McDavid

Also gives off smartest guy in the room syndrome during all his pressers

That said I’m sure he works again the NHL but maybe has to start again as an assistant or something

If he can do nothing other than get the Penguins power play to work I would be satisfied. It has always been trash throughout the Crosby era.

More teams are starting to shift towards player coaches that have had a long playing career rather than hiring career coaches.
Wouldn't really say that at all.

It's really a mixture of all kinds of types that have been hired in the past year. Guys with long careers, guys with no careers, guys that were once good at coaching given another shot etc..

Woodcroft being somewhat inexperienced at the NHL level and taking off 18 months could be what is hurting himself more than anything.

He might have to take an assistant role somewhere or find a head coaching gig in the NHL before teams give him another shot. Unlike others he just doesn't have the contacts that others have. Chia in STL, Holland in LA and McLellan in Detroit is really the extent of his rolodex

To be fair. The defensive buy in from the oilers only came after he was fired and a locker room speech by Janmark.

The oilers bouncing back regardless that season of who coached them.

Let’s not act like knobloch made some huge difference and let’s not pretend that Oiler fans didn’t want knobloch fired during the season this year. There’s a very embarrassing thread on hf oil about firing knobloch.

Woodcrofts problem is his demeanor. He comes off as very new age and condescending when he speaks. He says the right words and talks the talk but for some reason it’s. It believable. He’s a good coach and I think he was fired in EDM too early. The issues the oilers faced needed to be solved by the players and they were.

If Woody is anything in his interviews/day to day life like he portrayed himself to be in his press conferences, the man is arrogant to a (serious) fault. I can’t imagine him taking much accountability for how his time ended in Edmonton and instead trying to talk up how great he and his systems are.

Knoblach going to back to back cup finals with the oilers would like bad on Woodcraft.

Not as bad as the Rangers though. They had Knoblach in their system and just lost him.

He hasn’t got fired from enough jobs yet. In order to be popular in this league, you need to get fired 3+ times or be an all star calibre player at one time. It’s an old boy’s club
