The Jets are a fun team to watch. As a group they get their noses dirty which also makes them a tough to to play against.

Without some changes the Oilers will never be that type of team.

Hall and Schultz (and Eberle) simply do not have that element in their game. Asking them to play gritty is simply not sustainable for them long term.

That said...as Strudwick pointed out...in a scrum situation all they have to do is grab somebody. No punches need to be thrown...just act like you care.

Thats really not asking for much IMO and they shouldnt have to be told this.

Ya the players are playing for money... not for each other and not showing the passion to actually be a competitive winning team.

As to losing money to a suspension... peanuts. If this team was a hard working, gritty team that actually gave a ****... every year they'd be making bonus playoff money as well... which would more than make up for the occasional "indiscretion" on the ice that comes from the heat of the moment passion of playing gritty competitive hockey where your heart is in the game and you've got the backs of your teammates.

That's all lost on this team... WAY too many playing safe for a big paycheck and all the heart and soul is gone from this team.
 
Meh, Hall used to be like that until Derek Dorset and general apathy beat it out of him.

Man he was great to watch, even his rookie year. Just everything you'd want in a winger.
 
The really need to weed out the wimps on this team. Schultz and Eberle should be traded and if we draft Mcdavid, so should RNH. Yakupov is horrible right now but at least he shows some heart and you can still see potential with him. I could see Hall starting to care more once this team is winning but can he put up with another 2-3 seasons of losing while Mcdavid, Draisaitl and Nurse mature?

The team has apparently made a choice between Schultz and Petry. They choose Schultz and Petry will be traded and not be re-signed.

So in essence the team has made a choice about its identity as well.
 
Absolutely loved this interview. I'm so sick of these "talented" kids turning a blind eye to these scrums. Hall, Eberle, Schultz? They will NEVER make the sacrifice for the team - way too individualistic. Wnough excuses, this core has major issues. Pouliot getting jumped and Hall , as a alternate captain , skates away lol.. You wonder why he's not a captain? He doesn't give that extra 5%, just coasts.

Hmm.. Are we seriously comparing giroux and crosby to our core? First of all, Giroux and Crosby have a pulse and if you've been paying any attention you'd know Giroux doesn't back down from anybody. Crosby is the star of the league, and if he gets injured in a scrum it hurts Pittsburghs playoff chances. If Hall takes a jab to the mouth, we still finish last place. And Crosby doesn't have any bottled up anger because they win games, fams are upset because not only are the core playing **** hockey, but they won't even have enough pride to protect themselves, or their team mates more importanrly in a meaningless season. You want to give Hall a captaincy where he doesn't stick up for his own team mates? People at sunday night shinny defend strangers in a meaningless league when **** hits the fan. Taylor Hall and Schultz? Not even in the same hemisphere

Crosby also won a cup.

He battles like crazy and is in scrums all the time.

Crosby's passion >>>>> Hall's passion.

Schultz... Soon, I hope, we will stop talking about him as if anyone ever uttered anything about Norris potential. He shouldn't even be in the same breath.

It's not about taking the first swing or any swing... it's about getting into the game and showing some push back. Get in the guys face and have some words at least... this is a game played by MEN for F's sake!

I've seen more passion displayed in my beer league. And the entire league reshuffles the teams every season (3 times a year) so we are most likely jawing at somebody we played with before.

That's what this game does when you have any semblance of competitiveness.

AND Giroux and Crosby most DEFINITELY do this. Our guys bow their heads and coast away because every ounce of competitive spirit has been sapped from them.

MacT needs to shake up this core so that those that remain (and individually I like them all) can get a jolt of reality and remind themselves that a team lives, dies and loses their jobs TOGETHER.

If I was MacT it would be two of our "elites" for an elite Alpha, followed by filling every available bottom six or bottom pairing spot with a guy like Hendricks. Most of the guys we have need to go simply because they've done too much of the heavy emotional lifting on their own (see Horcoff) and have also lost or are losing their will to compete.

Inflicted by the toxic environment of losing...

This is Mactavishs' team. When he coached it was about being gentlemanly with no fights and no checks as they put you out of position.

why is anyone surprised?
 
This is MacTavishs' career. He was a third/fourth line guy. He rarely hit and rarely fought. His low PIM's were from his tendency for the long-reach-out hook, the slash, and the holding. He was really good at faceoffs and played a good positional game. Good penalty killer.

The team he is trying to build appears to mirror this save for the positional play.

I will say this for him. He did grab a guy when scrums popped yup during a game.

Hall is taking a lot of heat here, and rightfully so.

However, does anybody know if Hallsy still has that knee brace on?

Even holding a player and possibly falling the wrong way could lead to a pretty serious injury (in Hall's case), with a wonky knee. Depending on the nature of the injury, could even be career ending.

Does anyone know what's happening with the brace situation?

Justin Schultz has no excuses at all though.

That would apply to everyone regardless of knee brace status. There's always the chance of a freak injury, a preexisting one only gives a slimmer margin for error and that definitely shouldn't be in his head in the heat of the moment (if he even had any heat in him at that moment). If such is in his head to that extent he shouldn't be back yet because playing hockey full speed is a lot of times more likely to cause or aggravate an injury.

That being said, Hall has stated he's not playing injured right now and the fact remains they were six skaters to five.

I didn't even watch the game yesterday. Didn't know about this scrum. Not surprised.

Team is full of a lot of pansies. Some of that is just this depressing losing culture, but you can't turn a blind eye to a scrum.

Petry has shown he is a "scrum runner". Schultz could get punched in the face and he wouldn't even talk back to a guy.

Hall probably just doesn't a **** now. Playing for nothing. Too much of the season left. Probably looking forward to the end of it and a nice Vegas trip with the boyz.
 
Strudwick's show has always been great. I ALWAYS listen to his. Never CHED. I like no holds barred criticism when it is deserved.

Crosby has lost a bit of his passion since all his injuries which is honestly understandable.

It is hard to say, I just hope when the team starts winning the passion shows up. Right now it is sad though.
 
Understandably Jason said, "No. It's not my place", when asked (in a text) if he'd ever say anything about this topic to Hall or any of the others still on the team who were there when he was. It would be nice however if Struds or any other media member would ask MacT if the Oilers players repeatedly not backing one other up is a concern to him.
