Jason Robertson’s season so far…. (yikes)

coming into this season Robertson was playing to a 1.07 PPG pace.

this season, Robertson is at a 0.58 PPG pace… that’s an absurd dip in production.

infact over an 82 game season, he’s on pace for 48 (!!!) points.

he currently sits at:

5 goals,
9 assists,
14 points in 24 games played.

he’s in the midst of just a brutal stretch of hockey…

7 points in his last 14 games played and just one goal. what’s even more baffling is… he’s barely shooting the puck. just 28 shots on goal in those 14 games is not going to cut it. this season he’s averaging 2.37 shots on goal per game. the year he was an all star (2 seasons ago) he was averaging nearly FOUR shots on goal per game. that’s an insnae dip in numbers!!

he’s signed at a whopping near 8 million a year for one more season after this one.

so for those who have watched him play this season/have any idea what to make of all of this… help me understand. has he been as putrid as his stats say?

He's honestly a terrible skater. I think it starts there. He also had foot surgery, which may have made his poor skating even worse. (There is a post somewhere about the fastest/slowest skaters, and he looms large in every slow category this year)

From what I see, he is entirely reliant on linemates to carry the puck and create space, as he can't do it on his own. He put up most of his points playing with Hintz and Pavelski, and Pavelski is no longer there. Not sure if that is a coincidence or not, as I'm not sure exactly how Pavelski was helping him with space (he was pretty slow himself).

He's obviously much younger with plenty of time to course correct, but the drop off is eerily similar to Dany Heatley. Another guy who was great when he had the puck in space, and fell off a cliff when he stopped being able to get any space.

Yeah, that's the chart. I think that sort of explains it right there.

I think the real question is, "Is this temporary, or does Dallas need to build a better line to cover his skating weakness"?

his foot surgery must’ve really affected his skating cause players as slow as him usually do everything they can to get better at skating. And many of them actually end up getting faster as long as they don’t wait too long to focus on it. He’s still young so as long as there is t a chronic injury hampering his skating ability he should be able to figure things out.

He's become the worst skater in the league. In todays NHL you have to keep up. That's why (whether it works or not) there's some GMs that prioritize skating more than anything when drafting/acquiring players.

I always found Hintz to be a way more dynamic player than Robertson, when I watched Dallas. Speed wise, or even creativity wise. Robertson mostly hovered around the net and put some pucks in. Could still be a useful player obviously.

He's got all the talent and IQ in the world, but yeah his skating somehow looks even worse this season and like someone else mentioned he hasn't been going anywhere near the net. Hardly even gets chances to shoot the puck half the time because he can't get space

Idk why the Stars haven't thrown him in front of the net on the PP yet. He's too slow to skate around with it up top. I know they want him to use his shot more but it might be time for the greasy goals

Yeah, Hintz has always been the better player. Now there’s a guy with real star attributes. Speed, size, two-way game…wish he had a bit more consistency and actual top line usage but…

He's still got good hands even if there's cement blocks on his skates, so yes a net-front game would work for him I think, especially on the powerplay.

But hoping for an improved Stars powerplay is something we've been doing for some time now.

With Seguin gone though, we're due for a shakeup.

Seguin being out for the season puts more pressure on the younger guys.

There's a pretty notable player that is only like two spots better than Robertson on each list.

Stars may have dodged a massive bullet with this contract. He got locked in as a 79-point sophomore, right before the massive 109-point season. If what we’re seeing right now is his future, then one more year at $7.75M won’t be too hard to swallow. Eat it and move on.

Imagine if they’d signed him long term after his 109-point season. That could have been franchise altering.
