I'll go a different route as a Devils fan. We keep Nemec.

Devils trade:

Dawson Mercer
Seamus Casey

Seattle Trades:

Jared McCann
Yanni Gourde (Much needed 3C) UFA
Joshua Mahura (purely for left handed Depth on D) - UFA 775K - 100% retained
2026 4th (Seattle has 2 of them)

Devils lines post trade:

McCann-Hughes-Bratt
Palat-Hishcier-Meier
Cotter-Gourde-Noesen
Tatar-Haula-Lazar

trade makes no sense for NJ.

trade makes no sense for NJ.

Explain how exactly?
We get a 3C in Gourde. We get a Top 6 scoring forward in McCann. We get a depth LHD. Where does the trade not make sense? I would trade Mercer and Casey in this deal in a second and drive them to the airport. Sorry if you disagree. Ill go as far as saying id even add the 2nd! We are gonna go for it this year, and trade that involves a contract with term coming back wil mean we lose a prospect D. We still have a 2nd, Nemec, Silayev, Yegorov, Gritsyuk in my deal.

You might see Fitz make a deal for a 3C and forward. Like Evans/Armia. Gourde/McCann, etc.

The other option is trade both 2nds for two depth guys and call it a day.

Now ill go back to my hole lol.

I absolutely loathe Mercer but I am not trading him for a pending UFA in Gourde. That is insanity to me. That is basically what your trade breaks down to. Casey for McCann, Mercer for Gourde. I dont give a shit about Mahura, he is nothing.

I love McCann. Would love to have him. Trading ANY roster forward in a deal for him makes 0 sense. none.

I disagree. IF we are getting a player back with term I would do it. IF we are trading for Nick Bjugstad or Jake Evans its picks only lol. McCann is an upgrade to Mercer. Gourde is a perfect fit and a proven cup winner and is exactly what you've said a perfect fit for the 3rd line and we agree on that. We are a better team with Gourde and McCann. We would get McCann for 3 playoff runs in his prime. With or without Mahura. I threw his name in because Weekes mentioned him as a possible depth dman for us as a LHD, I would make this deal tomorrow. And still have Nemec and a 2nd while getting two needed roster forwards. I think Mercer makes the most sense in a deal like this rather then the least for a lot of reasons.

I know I keep saying this, but there is ZERO chance we will get a top 6 forward under contract unless we dangle ONE of Casey, Silayev, Nemec. A GM would be stupid not to ask for one. IF your position is you do not want to trade any of them that is fine. But if we are getting a player with term back one is gonna go.

I understand where you are coming from but if you break the trade down this way- Casey for McCann , Mercer for Gourde , it makes no sense to trade Mercer for a UFA Gourde . And I’d say Mercer is > Gourde . Maybe tweak it so it’s Casey plus Gritsyuk and or picks and leave Mercer out if possible. However I don’t think Casey is enough to get McCann and not sure if a 2nd round pick is desirable enough either ( adding Casey ) ? I don’t know. Not sure what else to offer that saves giving up Nemec. Maybe just going the route of Evans plus another depth guy is the way to go and keep the assets like Nemec and Casey ? Wait for someone that is the equivalent of Nemec that plays C or ? Or nit sure if we need to keep Nemec as our Hamilton replacement . I guess depends on how well Casey develops and if we can keep Kovy on D or if he walks

I hope Fitz goes with the depth option. Names like Evans, Donato. Frederic, Tanev. He doesnt do rentals normally but a few of these would be resigns to replace the bottom line, move players down from current lines. He didn't make these moves this summer to come up short.

I am all on board for depth trades if that is the route Fitz chooses to go. And I agree, Evans and Frederic are good fits here. But McCann would be a great pick up.
