Cowen has been a lot less physical this year than he has been in the past. I'd like to see more of that nastiness. No way PK should have been able to power past him for the puck on that GWG (even if it was a softy). PK should have been flat on the ice with Cowen on top of him with a nice facewash to boot.

If you watch the replay, Cowen blocked PK's initial attempt and then knocked PK to the ice.

Falling PK just shot he puck to the net.

IMO Cowen did his job, Anderson crapped the bed.

He's young. He's a project. Obviously we are just going to have to live with it.

Holmes is right. He's a project and one that will be worth sticking to. You don't want to give up on him so soon only to see him explode with his potential on another team. He will get better and will become a great shutdown guy in the back end. He has the potential to become a beast for us. My actual biggest gripe with him is his lack of a mean streak. I would love him to develop that Chara/Pronger nastiness because he has the size to do it and nothing would be greater than to see Cowen laying into people left and right with big hits like those two did. Everyone here would love to see him knocking smurfs left and right and making them afraid whenever he is on the ice.

I think many people on here will be eating crow in a few years. Defenseman take more time to developm, especially larger one. Bookmark it

I wish I felt as certain about Cowen as some of you do.

He could be the next dominant big man, he could also just as easily be a total bust in my opinion.

What???
Elite? not yet, maybe dtr, or in his own mind.

For a D to stand there and admire their own shot from the point while an opponent skates 10-15 feet behind you ...
Not an elite play, in fact shows a lack of maturity.

I've been telling my D players from PeeWee thru Midget not to do that, it's a learned thing.

Maybe last night he learned something.

Think maybe you should have a look at the replay.

Cowen attempted to get the puck deep to Turris.

Plekanec approached on the check and passed Cowen as he released the pass. Cowen recognized the threat immediately, but Plekanec did have the momentum and a few stride head start.

Fact is Cowen really had no other options given the angle Plekanec was approaching.

Karl had headed deep, Mac was at the net, Turris was standing down low and Gionta was positioned to intercept a pass attempt to Ryan.

The fact is the only way that could have turned out better was if Ryan had moved back into the neutral zone to give Cowen support and offer Cowen an alternative option.

To suggest Cowen stood and admired his shot is just wrong. There were several questionable decisions made that ended with the puck in the Sens net.

Sometime things don't always go a planned, but mistakes don't mean there was a lack of maturity at all.

There were 9 goals scored in that game last night, could have been a few more.

I guess using your assessment there were plenty of players that showed a lack of maturity.

He isn't a bust now, he is playing over 20 minutes a game in the NHL.

While he may never be the dominant D the Sens and fans hope for, he is a solid NHL defenseman at 22 years old.

Cowen is going to be one of the key players for this team moving forward, there's no doubt. I'm astounded that Ottawa "fans" think he's crap and should be traded.

If you're in that group, please name me ONE defenseman drafted in the last 10 years that have his size, mobility, and nastiness. Just one, try it.

He's going to make mistakes, as are many other players on this team. Ottawa is one of the youngest in the league. You all got spoiled with a couple of playoff experiences while the team was still retooling with youth. They're throwing out 3 guys in their top 4 D pairings that are 23 and younger. It's incredible that they can do that and be contending for a playoff spot. And they're going to make it, probably ahead of Montreal when all is said and done.

I really don't understand when fans like you laud Cowen for his mobility. He isn't mobile, and often gets turnstiled on the rush when his poke check misses. He doesn't have the jump to get to pucks in the corners faster than speedier forwards in the cycle game either.

He's no Derian Hatcher, but he isn't 'mobile'.

Cowen has had issues dealing with speed to the outside since he came up to the Sens. I've seen no improvement there. He's been playing much better than earlier this season though.

Not sure how I feel about him moving forward. I wouldn't be sad if he were moved for a big young forward, but I also think he can be a valuable 3/4 guy moving forward. I don't think he's a legit top pairing guy though.

Yup. Great tools but I dont think he has the hockey sense or awareness to get to the next level.

Cowen made a bad pass on the tying goal and was unlucky on the rebound. **** happens, it's the NHL kids.

Karlsson makes several bad plays like that and always gets a pass because his game is pretty pretty.

That's what really piss me off about this board, double standards and bias

And I say that as a huge Karlsson fan. Actually, I'm a big fan of both and I want them to be our Seabrook-Keith pairing.

I assume there will be a few dumb posts in this thread but haters are going to be haters and dummies are going to be dummies no matter what. So I'm not going to read and participate in this thread much

I'm so much hoping that we make a mistake and trade Cowen so that freaking fanbase could learn it the hard way and it blows on their face

Go easy there, he had two assists tonight, ECHL hockey IQs don't do that.

Also could have had (at least) another one on the sure goal by Bobby Ryan that Price totally robbed.

Anderson made him look bad on the Subban's goal. The shot was harmless for a NHL goalie and wasn't even a real scoring chance.

The bad:

Well, the only bad in this is it should have been a penalty, you can't grab the arm and hold the stick to steal the puck, wtf?

We've been called for a LOT less than that a THOUSAND times, and anyone who watch Sens games consistently knows it.

I'm pretty sure every Sens player was waiting for the call, who never came. Even Lehner was like "dude where's the call?"

I'm actually mad to see this replay cause it reminds me how we got robbed in this game.

I wouldn't be able to play at this level because I would get pissed too often, like go right in the face of the ref.

Let's put it in perspective. Cowen's been playing better as of late, better than at the beginning of the season, so he had a bad moment last night and it happened to cost us a point. It happens to the best of 'em.

I actually can't believe the amount of people that were blaming Cowen for that.

He was much more mobile before his surgery. He was quite highly thought of chiefly because he was such a big guy who could still skate. The surgery he got takes about a year to recover from + the fact that he basically didn't play hockey last year. Give the kid time. He needs to string together a couple healthy seasons in a row before you're really going to get a chance to see how good he is.

In my mind this year for him is basically a repeat of rookie season. He's just getting a ton of flak because people want him to recover in a superhuman way from his injury. His game is coming along, it's only going to get better. Is what it is. Selling him now would be selling low. You keep him and let him continue to grow his game. What we really need is a guy like Gonchar or someone of a similar ilk. Someone who can help teach him and get him where he needs to be. Phillips game is trash now, he's the wrong guy to be teaching our young guys.

Sorry, right.

As for the play where Cowen lost his stick...the thing that was weapons grade potato is that he actually goes for the stick, then coasts behind the guy that walks in and scores. At the very least he should have taken the body.

I don't understand when fans like you think that mobility only means Karlsson-like skating. Cowen is massive and skates well. Most guys near his size are painfully slow.

And the argument that he can't get to pucks in corners against speedy forwards is about as valid as saying Karlsson can't defend against burlier players. Just like Karlsson can take a different approach and beat that player with his stick or speed, Cowen can outreach and out muscle the small forwards.

If Ottawa had a defenceman that was 7'0", 325 lbs, skated better than Karlsson and had the vision of Gretzky, fans here would find something like his skating stride to moan about being a weakness...

Well if he gift wrapped goals / games for the opposition regularly, you are probably right.

Can't be right when you are wrong, take your best shot with this kind of stuff to Murray and MacLean and see what their response will be.

If you are going to hang tags on Cowen for the tying goal last night, then there are a lot of Senators that are even below project status.

As for the play where he lost his stick, it should have been a penalty, everyone watching that play with a little hockey knowledge knows that, except the ref and you.
