You know what gets me most?

Cowen had an incredible opportunity to play catchup during the Olympic break. We all know, that overall, this has been a bad season for him. He had a rare opportunity to spend 2+ weeks during the season hitting the gym, renting some ice on his own and working on his game, spending a few hours watching game tapes and "working" (under the table) with a trainer or two to give himself a nice boost going into the last part of the season.

It's pretty obvious watching the game last night that he didn't do anything at all to work on his game and show us that he has the ability and work ethic to be a pro. He looked awful out there - even worse than the last few games before the break.

I'm not sure if he's really all that committed to being a pro long-term, or if he thinks just because he has a second contract in his back pocket that he's suddenly a star and doesn't have to work for it anymore.

His ceiling is just getting lower and lower as far as I'm concerned. I think the absolute best we can hope for with him is a #4 D with zero hockey sense and poor compete level.

Damn I agree

Cowen used to be untouchable for me. Cowen you suck

Is it possible to send him to the Ahl without waivers or is that out of the question? Because Luke would do wonders with Cowen.

Ive never seen a player single handily cause so many goals against. Going by his entire career.

This.
I'll be hosting a party at my place the moment he is traded...
For real though...I'm inviting people to my house and they'll have no idea why or who Cowen is, but they will come over and enjoy eating free food and won't complain. Then we can all play pin the tail on the Cowen.

Will there be carrots..with dip

This is where we part ways.

If that's all you noticed or took away from Karlsson's game today in where he was best player on the ice then I unno what more to say. Good day.

Phillips always sucks though. It's not Phillips or someone else, it's Phillips AND ....... today it was Cowen :sarcasm:

I'm being cereal.

One thing karlsson does do is he tends to follow his man around all the way to the blueline. But that could be his teammates not cycling back to cover for him, and he tends to puck watch a lot, and jumps up into the play before the play is even a sure thing. This is both his strength and his weakness. needs to pick his spots a little better, and holds onto the puck a little too long on the rush, and I just don't like him at the top of the umbrella, seems like he can only hit the net on the big ice, and his passes on the PP are getting sloppy. This is just the negatives. I fully realize he brings so much more to the team. Every player has his faults. Except Hoffman, and lazar.

I saw him practice over the break at the Sensplex during my son's tournament. He was working his ass off and all the parents and players noticed how well he skated and passed.

Don't know what else to say, but a lot of people sucked last night. Hard to hang it all on him...

Cowen has sucked all year. The only time he has looked good at any point was about two of the weeks he was paired with Karlsson. Given that he has been horrendous the remainder of the season, I willing to put that down to Karlsson's influence rather than Cowen's skill.

This is the catch 22 we've been put in by a bad defense corps: You either play Karlsson with Methot and have a legit, top-flight first pairing and two terrible ones, or you split them up and play Karlsson with Cowen and Methot on the 2nd pairing and are left with one okay pairing and two bad ones.

This team desperately needs another top pairing quality defenseman to play 20-24 minutes behind Karlsson-Methot.

Agreed. That's why I wanted bouwmeester so bad last year. A tad over paid but the guy can eat minutes and doesn't handle the puck like a grenade. Sadly those guys are hard to come by.

He was eligible earlier in the season, but I doubt he still is.

That ship has sailed. Due to his contract, and Brian Murray not wanting to look like the incompetent doofus that he is, we are stuck with Cowen, and we can only hope that he gets his head out of his ass at some point.

The fact that Cowen hasn't been indefinitely scratched or sent to the AHL by this point is absolutely insane. WTF are they doing here? Swap him out with an AHL player FFS. I really hated Carkner's game when he was here (except for beating Brian Boyle's ass) but he would be a huge improvement on Cowen at this point.

I think it has more to do with his brain than, as someone already mentioned, training or his physical ability. It just seems like he is in perma mental block. Whether that is confidence issue or just his mental acuity, it is not something that can be solve during a two week break, or something that cannot be solved at all depending on his psyche.

He's not a top-4 defenseman right now, but MacLean and Murray (probably more Murray) continue to put him in situations where he will inevitably fail. It is really mind-boggling. This guy should be given sheltered minutes so he can learn the game and build his confidence.

Don't blame Cowen, blame management. Just because you are paying a guy to be good doesn't make him good.

Also, you don't sell low. You keep him and trade a young forward prospect+ for a real defenseman.

Do you think anyone will actually pick him up with that contract? I say risk it, send him down, regardless the team gets better.

Clarkson... Leino... Greening... Devan Dubnyk, Tyler Myers...

You guys are full of hyperbole.

The whole damned team failed to show up.
Hoffman wasn't on ice for a single 5-on-5 Corsi event against. He showed up.

Karlsson wasn't on ice for a single goal against. He showed up.

Two players who didn't take the break as an opportunity to be lazy showed up to play. What a shock.

Cowen is horrible. He has no hockey IQ and he's got to be the slowest skating defenceman in the league. Pretty sure my 94 year old Grampa could skate faster.

at least he's not screening the goalie
