Jared Bednar & Co. Discussion Thread

Fair points, I shouldn't have used an example. Thinking with common sense it would be best to have more time with a new coach to learn the system and get ready for the playoffs.

Maybe because Bednar is with the Avs mafia he lost connections to the hockey world so he can't find anyone to come here

So it's been over a month since they fired Ray Bennett. He's already found a new gig and we've heard next to nothing about the Avs filling the position. Is there simply a lack of quality candidates left out there? I haven't so much as seen suggestions thrown out there.

Interesting name to look out for: Neil Graham, headcoach of the Texas Stars. If Dallas doesn't pick him to replace DeBoer, I wouldn't be shocked if he leaves the organization. He's been a head coach of their AHL team for 5 years now, they've had decent success, and just went to the conference finals. Nill said that they want to continue with the same blueprint, but with a different voice. If that doesn't mean promoting from within, that would be a slap in the face for Graham.

Now, would he want to become an assistant, or rather continue to look for another AHL head coaching gig?

They keep talking about him on 32 Thoughts, like he's almost assuredly gone if they don't promote him to the HC position in Dallas. Colorado is, near as I can tell, the only place at present that has an AC opening.

Eagles HC and AC both gone for NHL AC jobs.

We continue to have the vacant AC role.

Are we waiting for somebody or just being super picky?

It's driving me nuts no one has a clue who the legit options are, and we're losing people on top of it.

I thought maybe they could be waiting on Tanguay to figure out if he's part of the new Detroit staff, but that seems less likely with each passing week.

Could they be waiting for what Dallas does with their AHL coach Neil Graham? Personally I'd prefer a more experienced coach.

They already had an extremely experience assistant in Bennett, which they felt they needed with two extremely inexperienced coaches in Bednar and Pratt at the time. I'm fine with them flipping the script now.

New ideas for offense on the PP & 5v5 are the goal. I hope they're looking absolutely everywhere. If it's a younger coach gaining notice so be it.

All I really care about is that the person comes from completely outside the Avs organization. We're entering the final years of being a contender. In car parlance, I want a new mechanic to give the engine (systems) a complete overhaul because we've just hit 100,000 miles.

We have the potential to be STARTING the season with the healthiest and best lineup we've had in years. I'd really like to see some system changes to freshen things up.

I miss the coaches and refs going at it...

Schoenfeld v Koharski, might be my favorite hockey "spat" of all time.

Probably NSFW with the language... but what a trip down memory lane.

Koharski was one of the worst refs of all time, just a useless fvcking zebra. Right there with Kerry fraser and Mick McGeogh- these bozos would ignore every rule in the book during the playoffs.

Unfortunately there are very few refs that leave the game with the fans respect in tact.

It's a brutal job... but again, I think most everything puck or tracking wise could be automated so that the only thing the officials are looking for are player on player infractions. The technology is here to track goals, offsides, icing, hell it can probably perform calculations on if a puck was tipped from above the goal crossbar.

Just imagine for a second... all of that is automated. We could do away with one official, go back to a three official system and make all of them capable of calling penalties. I've been asking for years for an official to be in the stands or "above the play" in some fashion to give a better overall view and another point of reference from which to make calls.

The NHL loves what they think they are doing with player movement tracking for stats. The NHL knows it's got a problem with their refs not being the most consistent. Why not use this technology that the NHL loves to lessen the burden on the officials freeing them up to concentrate more solely on player vs player infractions instead of ticky-tacky was a dude an RCH offsides?
