Jared Bednar & Co. Discussion Thread

Assistant coach spots are filling up quickly across the NHL. Teams are getting the guys they want and getting it done early.

It's been a month since Bennett was announced as not coming back. We haven't heard a single rumor about who the Avs will hire as the offense/PP assistant.

A suitable candidate in Dan Hinote was just poached by Tampa Bay to fill that exact role.

What's going on?

I keep wondering "what's the plan here?" with a lot of the Avs decisions lately.

I thought they may promote Hinote, but he also didn't have very good power plays in Columbus or Nashville, so maybe that was a factor given that's why they let Bennett go.

Normally, I would think this means they have their eye one someone else, but who knows at this point.

Maybe they were waiting to see if Spott was let go from Dallas with DeBoer like you mentioned? That would explain the delay. Get some intel on the Stars, like I'm sure Mikko did for them on the Avs.

Detroit's coaching staff is also being reworked. So they could be waiting on Tangs too.

Hopefully they're looking everywhere.

When is Tang's contract up?

Also... is there a site that gives current NHL coaches and assistant coaches contract info? Like rate of pay and years left?

I truly believe we need someone that can bring fresh ideas and keep Bednar on his toes. It really feels like Bednar thinks he’s solved the league and refuses to change anything, so you need someone to push that group
I think you need someone who can come in and tell Bednar "hey you f***ing idiot, it's time to stop overplaying the top guys and spread the wealth at both 5v5 and on special teams."

Otherwise, idgaf who the assistants are next season it'll be the same old shit. "Top guys go" as players sit on the bench for majority of the game being ice cold but will be asked to go kill a penalty late in a game like he did to Charlie Coyle in game 7.

That would be CMac's job lol.

We need a coach like this if Bednar has another bad season. Bednar has his tail behind his legs most of the time.

Back when both the coaches and the media were real and didn't just cry about it.

"How about it Brooksie, go f*** yourself then"
"f*** you"
"Yeah f*** you too"

That Tortorella garbage doesn't impress me one bit.

It's funny, but it's also arrogant and unnecessarily confrontational from both Torts and Brooks. Two dipshits that were made for each other. Same with all that "we know what we did" bullshit. Just answer the question.

Props though to the female reporter, not intimidated one bit to ask the next question after Torts went at Brooks, while the male reporters looked scared to say anything.

Why can't Bednar be like this. "We know what we did. We know what we did". Most of the time Bednar does not call out his players. "How is MacK doing? Maybe you should go ask him".

We need a coach like this. Bednar is too passive.

Why though? Why do you want a coach like that? I get he won a Cup but he's also run himself outta town a number of times since then.

I generally don't like coaches who air their dirty laundry for all to see. Larry Brown did that in the NBA, Ron Wilson was infamous for doing that in the NHL for years, and both guys saw plenty of success, but also alienated players to a very large degree. Another guy who likes doing that? Pete DeBoer. How'd that work out for him?

Just because they're not getting visibly angry behind the bench or putting on shows of performative outrage during pressers doesn't mean they don't give a shit. If anything, the very rare times they DO publicly call out a player, it's a much bigger deal.

Yup - ask Pete DeBoer how far calling out your players publicly goes. Dallas wasn't going to fire PDB - until the exit interviews where the players told management that PDB had lost their trust and confidence. They hated the guy and really hated how he treated Oettinger.

You can have intelligent discussions about Jared Bednar and tactics. What you cannot ignore is the fact that his players respect him and like playing for him. That goes a long way. If it were otherwise, he may have been gone by now. If Nate and Cale and Toews really believed that coaching and strategy was the reason they lost to Dallas, Bednar is shopping his resume right now. I think JB is easily one of the top 3 coaches in the league. Wanna fire him? Go ahead - but you better have somebody better waiting on deck. Dallas hated PDB to the extent that they fired him after every other decent coach on the market got taken. They got the full story from the players and launched him into space. Again.

If Bednar was on the market, he's out of a job for about 30 seconds. And Dallas might be his first caller.

Yeah. There has been a serious disconnect, and it has to stop. Frankly, have been thinking CMac has had the idea of firing Bednar, but not had the OK from Sakic so far.
Personally, I believe that both CMac AND Sakic know that firing Bednar is something that is going to be 'in the cards' within the next few months. I don't think ownership would have been too pleased with firing Bednar with 2 years left on his contract.

I think they figured they'd keep him as the HC - find someone new for the PP and then see how the team performs out of the gate. If the players seem out of sync or that they've just plainly tuned him out - they won't have a choice regardless.

There will inevitably be coaches shown the door on other teams as the season progresses, so perhaps the Avs next coach was not available when they fired Bennett.

If indeed Bednar is fired and they use an interim HC and/or hire an established, veteran guy, it'll be the first time they've one either of those things in franchise history. At least in Avalanche history, can't say for sure with the Nords.

It's gotta happen at some point...

With the Nordiques, they certainly changed mid-season when one of their coaches became ill and eventually passed.

We are the only franchise that's ever traded a coach for a 1st round pick. (Michel Bergeron)

Remember Bednar's first season? That's what happens when you change the coach too late. If they do it, it should be done ASAP.

That was just an abhorrently shitty team. Softest, slowest roster in NHL history, and the big guns effectively gave up in December when both Varly and EJ went down with major injuries. Having Bednar rush in there last minute certainly didn't help matters but that team was always going to be an abject disaster.
