Jared Bednar & Co. Discussion Thread

Friedman on the possibility of the Avs moving on from Bednar:

“I just can’t see it….They believe Bednar is a very good coach and there aren’t many people better than him…..Only way I could see is if the Avs and Bednar both decided it’s time for him, which I don’t see or if they believe someone who is a lot better than him dropped into their lap and I’d love to see who that would be…..I would be shocked, absolutely shocked.”

Something tells me Nate may have a conversation with mgmt at some point soon, if he didn't already since the loss, about his thoughts on that trade and how it worked out.

He said he didn't understand what happened when it was made. Marty didn't play that well, their depth didn't beat the Stars game breakers, and Mikko just ended their season with a hat trick 4 point night. Easy for him to put all that together in his exit interview.

I have a feeling Bednar may not have loved the trade either. I bet he really wanted to keep Mikko. You can just see it in how he's talked about Mikko during and after the series, and how their big guns made the big plays, and talked about how that's just what Mikko does.
We have much deeper problems if your headcoach and Best forward are in this "mode".....

And speaking of MacKinnon: A player who is running his own regime and routine should think twice before blaming others....

Up to this day i still dont know what really went down with the AVS and Rantanen.

This franchise traded away Adam Deadmarsh back then. A close friend and buddy to Sakic and Forsberg.

And Sakic himself sent O´Reilly packing over money, a close friend to MacKinnon back then too and kept Duchene..... He got lucky with that Duchene-Trade-Home-Run in that process.

Imagine we keep Rants,, go into the playoffs with Mittelstadt as 2C, go nowhere and Rantanen walks in FA....

You and some others would be furious with MacFarland and demand his head......

We saw it when Stastny walked for free chasing money......

Look, if they want to clean house and fire MacFarland too, allright, so be it. Thats the business and i will not defend MacFarland at all costs. And yes, he also has to get his fair share of blame. Its on Sakic and Kroenke to make the call.

But if the players and Bednar really come up with this nonsense and claim that trading away Rantanen doomed another playoff run.... Well, f*** this losers, seriously.

It shouldn't play into the decision, but 2025 was the first year of Bednar's 3-year extension. He signed it back in early 2023 (iirc) but it didn't kick in until this season.

Some kind of change is necessary. I would be quite shocked if Bennett comes back next year. Pratt, much as I absolutely despise his penalty kill, has done really well implementing a defensive system that gets the very most out of its blueliners at both ends of the ice. So if he stayed I'd be a bit less shocked.

Not sure about Bednar himself. The lack of practice down the stretch with so, so many new faces IMO was a fatal mistake, especially when the goddamn power play went to hell at the worst possible time. I'm also growing tired of his inability to make adjustments. This is the one postseason where I can say definitively that he just plain got outcoached, and it ain't like I think DeBoer put on a master class in bench bossing. Bednar just kept trying the same shit and hoping it would finally work. It didn't. Special teams continually failed, the team could NOT hold leads in the third. Both things ended up torpedoing the season.

If he comes back, I'm fine with it, if he doesn't, I think I'm okay with that too.

The one concern I have with a head coaching change is that there might be a total philosophy change (i.e., let's bring in some loudmouth who will yell at the players and implement a boring grind/trap system) but I don't think Sakic would allow that. At least I hope he wouldn't. Let's be clear, the Avs, for all their flaws, are actually one of the stingiest teams in hockey. If anything, the new coach has to teach them how to properly fight through a trap, not adopt one themselves.

Nothing we already didn't know.

"I believe Jared Bednar is one of the best coaches in all of sports, not just hockey."

- CMac earlier this year

They've got their own old boys club going on in that front office.

Friedman talking out of his ass again.

I mean sure "they think he's a very good coach" - I'm quite certain that's true but just because someone's viewed as a very good coach, it doesn't mean he's going to coach the same team for 29 years. At some point, it's time for a change and time for a different voice and a different way of doing things.

As always, Elliotte wouldn't have ANY specific insider knowledge as to what the Avs are thinking in this case.

Plus, I disagree that there aren't better replacements either. I think Quenneville has easily proven to be one of the best coaches in the league with 3 cups with a great Chicago team - that's the kind of resume that Bednar SHOULD have.

I get that there was some nefarious stuff that happened under his watch but that was also under stan bowman's watch - the guy who was actually in charge of the team - and he got a 2nd chance. At some point, I think Quenneville should get a 2nd chance too.

My ideal scenario is the Avs move on from all three coaches and hire Quenneville as head coach, David Carle as assistant coach with the expectations that he's taking over in 2-3 years. They should also hire the best special teams coach that's available and bring in some fresh ideas.

Well is that just another kick to the dick…

Carle isn't going to accept an assistant role to leave DU, even if it comes with a head coaching promise in a few years. Not to mention the fact that I can almost guarantee he'll get some calls about a head coaching spots this year.

I don't know why the Avs continually say Bednar is one of the best in the business. Facts state a completely different story. Outside of one fluke run he hasn't been able to get past the 2nd round in 9 years. Most coaches with this resume get a pink slip. I thought the goal was to win championships not lose 1st or 2nd round every year.

Good coaches wouldn't lose 1st or 2nd round every year, with 2 of the best players on the planet on their roster. Good coaches wouldn't get smoked by the same guy every year.

At a certain point you have to call a spade a spade. He's an average coach who has gotten so so results considering his players, with one fluke run. He should be out of a job with this organization. It's time.

How is Bedz not fired yet?

You just lost to the same team you always lose to, but this time, they were without TWO of their best players, and you actually had a full lineup for once. How!?

No one is gonna be held accountable? You're just gonna run it back and pretend you aren't Dallas's prison bitch? C'mon, Kroenke...

I don't think Friedman knows anything about the Avs.

Unless LeBrun comes out and says the Avs aren't moving on, I'm going to remain hopeful the Avs move on from Bednar.

It was interesting that LeBrun was the one covering the series. Was at all games, at every media availability. The guy who has the best ties to the Avs organization was up close.

He also said that was the best series he has covered in possibly his entire professional career. He said the level of hockey was unbelievable, an absolute treat to be this close to the action.

I wonder what conversations he had over those 2 weeks with his connections inside the organization.

Unless it looks something like this, I ain't ready to fire him yet. (admittedly, I want nothing to do with coach Q)
There is more than just cups that keep guys like this around an organization for as long as they have been.

There absolutely need to be changes in the coaching staff. I'm still not on board with a wholesale firing, even though I won't be surprised if it happens.

I'm not really on board with the veteran coach either if indeed they seek a replacement. The Avs did pretty well for themselves going with an entirely new guy and not someone who's been recycled 5-6 times. There's no real heir apparent in the organization either (though I think the last time they tried this, it was David Quinn, who ditched them to go coach in the NCAA).

The reason why you go with a veteran coach this time is that the core is now veteran as well. When Bednar stepped in, MacKinnon was in his 4th year, 22 years old. Landeskog was 24 years old. Rantanen had just joined the league, Makar wasn't even there yet. They kinda grew together.

This time around, there really is not time for them to grow together with a coach. They need a coach, who has a clear plan and a vision. Obviously a rookie coach has his own vision as well, but no guarantees what works and what doesn't work at the NHL level. That's why I don't like the idea of Carle for an example.

They absolutely need to hire a veteran coach, there isn’t enough time left in the window for a young coach who has to learn on the job and try again the following year.

You need a coach who’s failed before and learned from the experience.

To me it just depends on how "veteran" the coach is. I want nothing to do with Torts or Lavi. I'd be okay with Bruce Boudreau, even though he's a very flawed coach. I just don't know who else is out there I'd really be that excited about.

Money will be a factor whether we like it or not, just like it was when they hired Bednar.

Could not agree with you more.

As far as the bolded, maybe if they had 2 of the best players on the planet and then a roster with poor depth, ok his playoff record would be more understandable but C-Mac has given him plenty to work with especially the last 2 years.
