5-6 years ago there was a ton of these threads due to JB's poor years after getting his big contract. That was then, this is now. Benn will be 36 next year, with a lot of wear, but somehow manages to play in almost all of his games, despite a physical style. Production is decent, though the trend is downwards. Mediocre at best skater. Great on FO's, tough as nails, good size.

Can Dallas afford him, with Heskainen, Oettinger, and Johnston contracts kicking in next year, and Harley and Robertson to be signed the year after? Wouldn't they rather focus on signing Duchene than Benn?

What would Benn get offered as a FA? I would assume that he would want to go to a contender, and not chase money, but who knows? I can see Guerin signing him for the Wild if he is available, as he is obsessed with size and toughness, and MN can certainly use someone who can win a FO. I think MN would have to overpay to get him away from Dallas, though. I can also see Berube wanting to add him in Toronto, but don't think that they can afford to overpay a role player, albeit a good one.

Benn has already stated that he’ll take whatever is left after everyone else is signed. Which is not a lot this year. Stars aren’t gonna move on from him as Wyatt is not ready to wear the C.

He’ll sign a 1 x 1.5 then maybe in 2026 sign a 1-2 year x 2.75-3.

I would imagine they keep him but at a fraction of the cost.

He's 35 so anything he signs are subject to the 35+ contract rules. If I'm Nill, I'm discussing AAV but advocating for 1yr deals until he wants to call it quits.

Or you do a low base salary and make bonuses heavily dependent on performance like Hall's contract just did.

I would think Dallas is going to keep him right?

It feels like they'll move Dumba and maybe Marchment.
dumba has negative value at this point. Not easy to move.

Marchment is 29 yo, Benn 35. I know that there would be a sentiment towards keeping the long term Star, but I can see Nill deciding to go with the younger guy.

What if he gets a 2 x 5M offer from another team?

He kinda has Crosby status in Dallas. His brother works for the team, he wants to retire here. He will be involved with team when he’s done.

He got his big pay day of 9.5 aav which was high at the time. I just cant see him leaving honestly for anything close to that and even then.

Wouldn't be surprised if Bourque is the sweetener for Dumba

I would be leaning towards the younger guy myself but even with the age difference, it isn't *that* different plus Benn figures to come in for less.

He's gonna do what he just saw Pavelski do and that's take 1-year low-money deals with easily attainable bonuses to keep the cap low.

It has basically been confirmed that he has spoken with Nill and told him to take care of other guys first and then come back to him. I think the odds of Benn playing for another team next year at less than 1%

When has anyone had to "throw in" a player like Bourque to shed a contract with one year remaining at less than 4% of the salary cap? That crazy talk.

Dallas will have $600k left when Benn needs to sign. That's when the Oilers will come in and sign him for $800k

Honestly, I think the Penguins would be intereseted in that.

Would the Stars want a pick back to open up as much cap space as possible or would you want a cheap roster player back to fill a hole?

Seeing Benn do this really makes you wonder what was going on in Stamkos' mind.
I'm all for getting what you deserve, but was a career salary of ~$150m instead of ~$135m really worth giving up the C, tarnishing your legacy, and uprooting your young family?

Half wonder if they would try to give him a contract like what Detroit gave Kane this year. Fill it with minor performance bonuses that can be deferred to next year's cap.

They'll still have Robertson needing a contract in 26-27, but deferring some of the cap hit to the following season gets them the $8.5M cap hike.

He’ll probably sign in late August once Dallas figures out the rest of the cap situations. He’s not going anywhere.

Benn's already said he'll take whatever is left over after the rest of the roster is completed this offseason.

Marchment and Dumba likely get traded to make room for everything else. Marchment has some decent value. Dumba, not so much, but he's also a veteran RD without a terribly absurd contract. I think there's a fair chance we can move him for nothing. Maybe we can just package the two together.
