I don’t know if you need to pick a unranked goalie at #100. He’s a 19 year old Czech. (Apr 11, 2002)

The Bruins also picked an unranked goalie at #117, Philip Svedeback is 19 year old Swede. (May 28, 2002)

The Panthers picked an unranked goalie at #152 but Kirill Gerasimyuk is young goalie in the SKA system w/ real buzz, he’s a 17 year old Russian. (Aug 22, 2003)

The Leafs picked an unranked goalie at #185, Vyacheslav Peska, he’s an 18 year old Russian. (Aug 27, 2002)

The Hurricanes picked an unranked goalie at #200, Yegor Naumov, he’s an 18 year old Russian. (Apr 10, 2003)

So the six goalies taken before and 10 of 14 goalies taken after Malek were on one of the Central Scouting lists of goalies (NA or EU).

Malek vs Malik

Can't help thinking this has been a source of both amusement and confusion for Czech hockey. Interesting that the Devils selected Jakub and not Nick Malik.

While both goalies are 2002-born, it would appear Malik has gotten more attention to date. Unlike Jakub, who was not in the CS final ranking, Malik was the eighth-ranked European goalie. He was briefly in the OHL and is signed to play in Finland next season. The son of former Ranger Marek Malik, he also played for the Czech U20 team while Jakub has not.

Will definitely be interesting to see what happens with these two in the future.

Goalies are also so weird that I don't care if they go off the board assuming they saw something in the kid.

Seems like so many goalie prospects that were highly regarded become nothing and you always get some kid coming out of no where

Ilves and Pelicans (Vilen) will match up for game 3 (tied at 1, best of 7) of Liiga semifinals in an hour. Malek will have some big shoes to fill since Ilves starter Marek Langhamer is out for some reason.

Malek so far this season is 9-7-4 and .903 in 22 Liiga games.

Based on this, and the post above from November, he's been pretty darn good since that early stretch. Only 15 games though.
