Primeau is a prime example of why we shouldn't get over excited over a goalie prospect putting up good college numbers (like Fowler). You never know what you have with goalies until they get here.

you could then say that for every prospect, as what does Primeau have to do with Fowler, since every prospect is on their own path. Everyone handles failure differently and it's very tough to know how these kids will react when faced with possible career failure at 18, 19, 20, years old. It's been said for the past few years that Primeau seems to struggle a lot with the mental part of the game, who knows if Fowler would react anywhere near the same.

One thing clear is that management doesn't want to go full tank mode this season
They had eyes on Demidov last year, they were 100% ok with a potential chance to get him
But now after 3 years of bottom dwelling
I agree, I appreciate the little immediate tinkering to help the team out of a rut
Instead of going scorched earth or this huge panic trade that could flop
They're instead tweaking certain minor problems here n there
Knowing full well an unbelievable amount of young talent in 3-4 guys is STILL on the way

I have watched Dobes play closely this year. To call his style unconventional, is an understatement. He plays an aggressive, if not awkward, style where he challenges the shooters relying on his size to cover as much net as possible. He really overcommits on occasion. While that style may work against AHL level players, I have a feeling that NHL players will light this guy up.
Exactly that was Askarov's issue as well to some degree. It's a great problem to have in my opinion because you can always teach positioning but can't always teach athleticism/reaction time/etc. Dobes always reminded me of Pekka Rinne in that sense. He too was big, aggressive and chaotic in the net.

Unfortunately I think Dobes still needs to work on that part of his game. He has all the tools to be a beast goalie, but I agree with you If he overcommits at the NHL level he is toast lol players will pick him apart and make him look like Cayden Primeau 2.0 when he first joined the Habs.

While I don't think he's ready quite yet, I will say that Dobes has improved big time since last year. He's not as chaotic as he once was nor does he waste as much energy moving around the net. More simple movements and trusting his size/angles to make the save instead of diving all over the place & overextending on saves. I just wish they'd leave him alone for a little longer so he can keep working on that.

When I was younger, playing nets but not really understanding the position from a strategic perspective, I used to think Hasek was the luckiest ass goalie to ever play the game.

When I got older and started to learn more about the position, he was really ahead of his time, he was baiting people into those saves all the time. Everything he did had a purpose.. the barrel roll save was specifically designed to force shooters into a space where they couldn't get enough lift on the puck and had no choice but to shovel it along the ice to where his sprawling arm would be.
I was going to post this exact same type of post lmao

When I was a twerp, to the eye, I remember thinking 'mannnn, it's incredible but it looks like some pretty lucky saves a lot, sometimes the flopping around looks, aesthetically , like he doesn't know what he's doing' lol
And yeah boy was I wrong when you start to understand what all the numbers mean especially in comparison to the other greats and Hasek it was like , .930+ sv % 's like every time , it was ridiculous lol especially taking into account the legendary hockey players playing at the time lol

He was somethin special that guy, loved him as a Red Wing, haaaated him as a Senator

Well I think it's just an area of the line-up they will need to fix before next year and they only have 9 months to find a solution.

Not sure how they view this season......but I have a pretty good idea of how they view the next one.

I agree. To me, the decision to promote Dobes now smacks of a bit of panic. I think the players have lost confidence in Primeau and that's never a never a good thing. But as I have often said, the team is in a transitional year and there will be a bit of experimenting to see have we have.

While the gap between the AHL and the NHL is significant, some players surprise and make the crossing into the promised land smoother than expected. Let's see how Dobes does and not immediately right him off if he gives up a six spot. I well remember some of Dryden's first games, another awkward, young goalie. People were ready to dismiss him as a one-time playoff wonder. They were wrong. Then there was Steve Penny, another awkward, one-time playoff wonder, who, regrettably, never took the next step.

Goaltending is parts athleticism, technique, confidence and black magic. Let's see what magic Dobes can conger up.

I honestly think that all solutions to Habs goalie problems is David Savard. The dude blocks 100% of the shots.
Why he is such a valuable trading asset at the trade deadline to any contender who believes that they have a realistic chance to go deep in the playoffs. Savard has the game that is built for the wars of the playoffs.

Dobes has a lot of athleticism and talent. I don't see him flopping around, I see him doing whatever it takes to get in front of a puck even if it's unorthodox at times.

I've had a lot of time for Dobes since we drafted him. There's a lot to coach in on technique but he's a top tier athlete in net and has the size, competitiveness to match.

Don't write him off. He might not ultimately win out over Fowler or Volokhin, but he's got a really great shot at taking the reins from Montembeault in the mean-time.
I keep forgetting we have volohkin.....love his game a lot but haven't watched since last season, how's he looking?

When does Primeau's contract expire? July 1st?

This would be hilarious if it turns out Primeau is sick or injured and that's why he isn't in Florida and why Dobes is called up.
